My invention relates generally to combs, and

more particularly to a comb that may be con-A veniently and effectively utilized in the formation of curls in the hair, and also for applying liquid solutions to the hair for the purpose oftinting and dyeing the same.

'I'he principal object of my invention is to provide a comb of the character referred to, having a main body portion provided with conventional comb teeth, and a handle extending from one end of said toothed body, which handle comprises a pair of spaced parallel fingers that receive between them the end of a strand or lock of hair that is wound onto the handle and formed into a curl as said comb and handle are rotated.

A further object of my invention is to provide a hair-dressing comb wherein the handle portion is divided to form a pair of spaced parallel fingers, Aand to mount on said handle a detachable member carrying a single finger that lies parallel and cooperates with the spaced parallel fingers of the comb handle in the formation of curls and in the dressing of hair.

A further object of my invention is to provide a comb having detachable parts that may be conveniently used for applying liquid solutions to the hair for the purpose of tinting or dyeing the same.

With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring by numerals to the accompanying l0 drawing, and particularly to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, III designates a comb body which may be formed of hard rubber, Celluloid, light-Weight metal, or the like, and which includes the conventional Aback and a series of l5 comb teeth II. l

Projecting from one end of this comb body is an integral member I2 that functions as a handle while the comb is being used to pass the teeth through the hair, and this member is provided go with a centrally arranged longitudinally disposed slot I3, and the portions to the sides of this slot constitute fingers I4, having tapered ends I5, and these fingers are utilized in hair-curling operations.

These fingers Il are practically semi-oval in cross section, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the inner faces I8 of said fingers, or the faces that are formed by the slot I3; are fiat and parallel.

In the use of this comb in curling hair, the end 30 of a strand or lock of hair is placed in the slot I3 and clamped to one or both of the ingers'by the thumb and fingers of the operators hand, and with the other hand the comb is nowvrotated so as to wind the hair around the fingers Il.

After the winding 4operation has been completed, the curled hair is engaged by suitable means, preferably a hair-pin, to hold the curl in shape, and the fingers Il are now withdrawn from the curl. o

In the modified construction illustrated in Figs.

3 and 4, the body of the comb is provided at Ione end with a short extension I l, upon which is removably positioned a socket I8, preferably formed of sheet metal. One end of this socket projects 45 beyond member I1, and suitably secured in this projecting portion are the inner ends of a pair I of spaced parallel fingers I9, the outer ends 20 of which are tapered.

In this construction the socket I8, carrying the fingers I9, may be interchangeably used with different comb bodies, and in the curling of hair the operation of this form of comb and the spaced fingers is identical with that form of comb illustrated in Figs. l and 2.

In the modified construction illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, the open flat loop 2| of sheetmetal is adapted to be removably positioned on that portion of the extension I2 adjacent the comb body i0, and carried by said loop is a linger 22 which, when the loop is properly applied to the extension I2, occupies a position parallel with and spaced apart from the fingers I4.

Thus when the loop is applied to the comb, finger 22 occupies a. position directly opposite the slot between the fingers I4, and thus three spaced parallel fingers are provided for engaging and curling the hair.

In the modified construction illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10, and inverted U-shaped clip 23, of resilient metal, is adapted to be positioned on the back of the comb body l0 near the outer end thereof, and carried by this clip is a finger 24 that occupies a position parallel with and spaced apart from the back of the comb.

When this construction is utilized for applying tinting compounds to the hair, a body of fibrous material, for instance absorbent cotton, is wound on the finger 2d to form a swab, and the same is saturated with the tinting compound and then applied to the hair.

In the modified construction illustrated in Figs. 1l and 12, an inverted U-shaped clip 25, formed of resilient metal, is adapted to be removably positioned on the back of the comb body l0 adjacent the outer end thereof, and formed integral with the end portions of this clip are pairs of upstanding ears 26 that are adapted to receive and grip the back 21 on the small brush.

This particular construction is utilized for applying dye to the hair, and when such practice is carried out the bristles of the brush are dipped in the dye and then applied to the hair.

Thus it will be seen that I have provided a hair dressing and curling comb that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.

It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved hair dressing comb may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

l. A hair dressing and curling comb comprising a toothed comb body, a pair of substantially parallel spaced iingers projecting from one end of said comb body and constituting a handle therefor, and a third iinger detachably mounted on the comb body and occupying a position spaced apart from and parallel with said pair of fingers so as to cooperate therewith in hair curling operations.

2. A hair dressing comb comprising a toothed comb body, a projection at one end thereof, a clip detachably mounted on said projection and a hair curling finger projecting from said clip.

3. A hair dressing comb comprising a toothed comb body, a handle projecting from one end thereof, which handle is divided lengthwise to form a pair of substantially parallel fingers, a clip detachably mounted on said handle and a hair curling finger projecting from said clip and occupying a position substantially parallel with the divided portion of said handle.
