Application April 22, 1940, Serial No. 331,021
' 3 Claims.
The invention relates to a comb adapted for i .fitting the pocket and more especially to a combination comb, ruler and ice scraper.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character wherein the characteristics of the same permit its use as an' ordinary hair comb, ruler and ice scraper or remover, being handy for the latter use to remove the ice or other particles from'a windshield of a motor vehicle while the ruler is susceptible for use in measuring and the comb usable in the ordinary manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and eilicient in operation, strong,I durable, and inexpensive to manufacture. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illus- Vtrated in the accompanying drawing, which disclosesthe preferred and modified vforms of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the comb structed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figures 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are views similar to Figure 2 showing slight modifications.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of a further modiflcation. g
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
cen-
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally the comb in its entirety while at the heel or back edge thereof, which is straight, there is provided a metal member forming a straight ruling edge l0 and this memberinvolves the beveled wall ll and opposite fiat side walls l2 and I3, respectively, the edge being also adapted for removal of ice from a windshield. The metal member extends substantially the greater length of the heel 0r back Il of the comb A, which as usual, has the fine and coarse teeth l -and i 6, respectively.
The beveled wall Il has thereon ameasuring scale, such as a lineal scale I1, so that the article can be utilized as a ruler in a similar manner to an ordinary ruler. The back I4 coextensive with the extent of the member is beveled corresponding to the beveled face or wall Il of such member. This member is anchored as at I 8 to the body of the comb A, which may be made from vulcanized rubber or any material from which the ordinary combs are made.
In Figure 3 of the drawing there is shown a modification of the invention wherein the back I9 carries the metal facing strip involving the beveled portion 20 and the flanged portion ihrespectively. This Astrip is only at one side of the back I9 of the comb and is made fast thereto by rivets, one being indicated at 22.
In Figure 4 of the drawing there is another modification of the invention wherein the metal strip 23 is reversely disposed to the metal strip being indicated at 24.
In Figure 5 of the drawing there is shown another modification wherein the back 25 has embedded therein a metal blade 26, vthe back at opposite sides of this blade being reversely beveled as at 21 and this blade constitutes a ruling edge or a scraper for removing ice from windshields.
In Figure 6 of the drawing there is shown another modiiication of the invention wherein the back 28'itself is provided with the beveled portion 29 creating a knifelike edge 30.
In Figure 7 of the drawing there is shown still another modification of the invention wherein the back 3| has the reversely beveled faces 32 creating a straight edge 33 for ruling and scraping'purposes'.
In Figure 8 of the drawing there is a still further modification of the invention wherein the comb' body for a portion of its length is devoid of teeth, being of solid plate-like formation It so that one or opposite faces thereof may be provided with advertising matter exampled at 35.
It is needless to point out in detail the manner of uses of the article because they should be apparent as such article is adaptable for use as a comb, ruler and ice scraper. g
The metal strips or pieces carried by the back materially reinforce the body of the. comb and thus increase the life of the same.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with a comb, the body portion thereof having flat faces terminating in a beveled edge extending across the same, and a.A
f metal reinforcing plate covering the beveled edge and having its edges embedded in the at faces of the bocLv flush therewith and the uppermost edge of said plate formed into a knife edge.
3. The combination with a comb, the body portion thereof having fiat faces terminating in a sharply beveled edge extending across the same, and a metal reinforcing plate secured to one side of the body portion and extending over the beveled edge and having its uppermost edge beveled to form a continuation of the other side oi' the body and forming a knife edge.
