Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
EDVARD M.
FULLER, OF SALISBURY, NEXV YORK.
HORSE-POWER FOR DRIVING RECIPROCATING SAWS.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 22,360, dated December 21, 1858.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. FULLER, of Salisbury, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York7 have invented certain Improvements in Horse-Powers for Driving Reciprocating Saws, the construction and operation of which I have described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings with suffe cient clearness to enable competent and skilful workmen in the arts to which it pertains or is most nearly allied to make and use my invention.
My said invention consists in the arrangement hereinafter described of the connecting rod which gives motion to the saw, and concoinitant parts, by which the connecting rod is made convenient and safe for the horse to pass over as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a plan of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of it.
A are the wheels upon which the machine is moved from place to place.
B is the frame.
C is the sweep to which the horse is attached to give motion to the main shaft D upon which the main wheel E is hung. This wheel E gears into the pinion F on the shaft G, and the wheel H hung upon this shaft gives motion to the pinion I on the crank shaft J.
The crank K operates the connecting rod L which gives motion to the half beam lever M, which is hung on the fulcrum a in the end of the beam N. At'the lower end of the lever M the connecting rod O is attached below the connecting rod L, and extends across under the other machinery and out beyond the track of the horse, beyond which it receives the saw. P is a hitching piece attached to the sweep. The connecting rod O is supported and guided on the side of the machine opposite the lever M by the hanger Q. By this arrangement and mode of connecting the connecting rod O to the gearing, the operating parts are brought within proper compass and the connecting rod O is yet so placed and operated as not to interfere with or injure the horse as he passes over it. There is no lateral vibration which endangers his legs.
rIhe particular improvement which constitutes my said invention and which I claim as having been originally and first invented by me is- The arrangement of the connecting rod O below the machinery and extending beyond the track of the horse as described in such a manner as to allow the horse to pass safely over it, by which arrangementthe machine is made more compact and eiiicient, and less expensive.
EDWARD M. FULLER.
