Description
H. K. DAY. Straw-Burning Boiler-Furnace.
No. 223,279. Patented Jan. 6,1880.
INVENTOH WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY K. DAY, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
STRAW-BURNING BOILER-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 223,279, dated January 6, 1880.
Application filed October 28, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY K. DAY, of San J os, county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented an Improved Straw- Burning Boiler-Furnace; and I hereby declaret the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of furnaces for steam-boilers, and it is especially applicable to that class of furnaces using straw as a fuel.
It consists in the employment of a continuous horizontal and vertical grate, and, in combination therewith, of a horizontal plate at the rear end of the horizontal grate, by which the draft through the ashpit is prevented from passing through the rear portion of the grate to strike the flucs directly, and is directed through the front part only.
Referring to the accompanyingl'ldrawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a view of my boiler and furnace. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.
A is the boiler, which is of the locomotive or tubular pattern, having a firebox, B, at one end and a smoke-box, U, at the rear end, the chimney D opening out from the smokebox, as shown.
WVithin the fire box is placed the grate, which consists of the horizontal portion E, supported at a suliicient height above the bottom of the ash-pan and the vertical portion F. This vertical grate may form a part of or be united to the horizontal portion, as shown, and it is placed at some distance from the tube-sheet, so as to leave a space, G, between it and the sheet. From the bottom of this vertical grate a plate or partition, H, extends to the bottom of the ash-pit, and another plate, I, lying upon or beneath the horizontal grate, extends backward from the vertical grate.
The usual tube J for feeding straw or light fuel to the furnace is attached to the door opening, and below this is a second tube or feeder, K, so that the fuel may be fed in at either point, or the burning mass may be properly stirred and loosened up.
The space G in front of the vertical grate F serves, first, as a combustion-chamber, and it has a door or damper, L, at the bottom, by which air may be admitted to increase the combustion, and through which any accumulation of cinders or ashes can be removed. In
one side, near the top, is an opening, M, through which a rod can be introduced to clear any cinders from the ends of the tubes it they should by chance become clogged.
By this construction and combination of the vertical and horizontal grates with the plates H and I and the combustion-chamber, I am enabled to burn straw in afire-box boiler with good results. The straw, being fed into the furnace and ignited, will be consumed, and the oxygen for its consumption is admitted only from the front, so that it must pass through the fuel and become heated before it reaches the combustion-chamber and fines. The vertical grate prevents the burned straw and cinders from being carried against the tubes to clog them; and by forming the chamber behind the grate and before the tubes a more perfect combustion and intense heat are produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. The improvement in steam-boiler furnaces, consisting of the vertical and horizontal grates E and F and the plates H and I, in combination with the chamber G and the tubes of a boiler,.substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. In combination with the boiler A, with its fire-box B, smoke-box C, and chimney D, and the feeeding devices J and K, as shown, the horizontal and vertical grates E F, the plates H I, and the chamber G, with its openings, the whole combined to operate substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY K. DAY.
Witnesses GEo. H. STRONG, B. H. NoURsE.
