UNITED STATES TENEPORARY BINDER OR LOOSE SHEET HOLDER Ralph F. Bunto, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Shakespeare Products Company, Kalamazoo, Mich., a corporation of Michigan,
Application June 30, 1938, Serial No. 216,717
15 Claims. (01. 129-18) This invention relates to improvements in' temporary binders or loose sheet holders.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder which is very simple and economical in structure, at the same time one in which the Wire binding element is completely concealed when the binder is closed.
Second, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder which permits the use of relatively soft low-priced cover stocks, at the same time one in which the binding element is effectively retained.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages in which the completed binder closely approaches the appearance of an ordinary bound book with the 'so-called library binding.
Fourth, to provide a temporary hinder or loose sheet holder employing a wire sheet binding element which may be manually assembled in the covers rapidly and without the aid of machines or special apparatus.
Fifth, to provide an improved loose sheet binder having these advantages in which the cover lies flat upon a support and the binding elements are effectively supported for manipulation for the en- A preferred embodiment of the invention is i1- lustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which: .Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a closed binder embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary inside view with the out-er cover member in extended position or prior to its being folded to its final cover position, the object of the figure being to show the structure of the covers. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary inside view with the inner cover and back member partially broken away.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section on line 5-5 of Fig-'1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan View of the inner cover and back member showing the binding member receiving slots therein.
Fig. '7 is a fragmentary detail sectionof a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
In the embodiment of myinvention shown in the accompanying drawing, the covers designated generally by the numerals I, land the back designated generally by the numeral 2 are formed integrally of sheet material, the sheet from which the parts are formed beingshown in Fig. 2 in extended form. This sheet is scored transversely at 3 to permit folding into inner and outer cover members 4, 4 and 5, 5 respectively, and at 6 to provide inner and outer back members I and 8, respectively. This type of cover generally considered is what is known as a French cover.
The inner back member 1 is provided with a plurality of spaced I-shaped slots 9 which are adapted to receive the sheet engaging members I0 which are connected in spaced relation by the reaches H. These sheet engaging elements, in the embodiment illustrated, each comprise a plurality of turns or coils resiliently held in normally spaced relation and axially collapsible to facilitate their engagement with the I-shaped slots 9 in the inner back member and with the T-shaped slots or notches l2 in the sheets 13. These sheets are conventionally shown. V
The sheet engaging elements are arranged through the slots 9 with their reaches H on the rear or outer side of the inner back member so that it is practically impossible to disengage the sheet binding member from the covers without practically destroying the binding. The sheet engaging elements are inserted through the slots 9 from the rear of the inner back member preferably by collapsing and when permitted to expand their end convolutions engage the ends of the cross portions or end enlargements of the slots 9. The outer back and cover members are then folded against the inner cover and back members and preferably secured by strips of adhesive indicated at H! joining the inner and outer cover members at each side of the back member. This holds the inner and outer cover members in aligned position and prevents any flapping movement of the outer cover members and also manipulation to-remove the binding element. s
The structure is quite satisfactory, however, without'this securing of the cover members together, and they may be tacked at spaced intervals instead of being secured throughout the length of the back members.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 7 a stiffening or reinforcing member I5 is interposed between the back members 8 and 1 and preferably adhesively secured to both of them. ,By this simple expedient a relatively stiff back is secured and it v provides a fiat back instead of a rounded back where fiat backs are desired.
The outer back member conceals and protects the binding element 50 that it does not scratch or mar a desk upon which it is laid or moved about. The binding elements cannot become entangled with the binding elements of other binders when the binders are closed. Further, the completed binder is attractive in appearance and has much the appearance of a bound book.
A further advantage is that relatively thin soft stock may be used with satisfactory results.
My improved temporary binders or loose sheets holders have a wide range of uses, as in catalogue binders, copy and notebooks, and, in fact, in many relations where light inexpensive temporary binders are desired.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found highly practical. I have not attempted to show various other embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
