Patented July 28, 1942 PAMPHLET BINDER Clarence D. Trussell, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., assignor to Trussell Manufacturing Company, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 24, 1941, Serial No. 424,255
2 Claims.
The invention here disclosed relates to binders such as used by buyers or other interested parties for holding in book form the catalogs of various manufacturers and known generally as pamphlet binders.
Catalogs, such as referred to differ considerably in makeup, particularly in regard to the binding by which the pages are held together.
Special objects of the present invention are to provide a binder, which will hold catalogs and other kinds of pamphlets, booklets, folders and the like, in conveniently handled book formation, regardless of the form of binding and other characteristics, such as the thickness or number of pages of the individual units, etc.
Also, it is a purpose of the invention, to enable the pamphlets to be quickly and easily engaged in or removed from the binder and to secure the pamphlets when so engaged positively and firmly and beyond any chance of accidental release. Other objects are to support the pamphlets in the binder in a way to protect them and save them from injury even under careless handling and to provide the structure accomplishing all the foregoing object in a simple, practical and inexpensive form.
The objects mentioned and others, as will appear, are attained in this invention by the novel features of construction, combinations and relations of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and broadly covered in the claims.
In the drawing, there is shown one practical commercial embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that structure may be modified and changed as regards the immediate disclosure, all within the true intent and broad scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Fig. 1 is a View of one of the binders with the front cover swung open to show the pamphlets held broken away to show different types of bindings held in place and the lower end of the binder appearing in section.
Fig. 2' is a generally similar view, showing the back cover thrown open.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the empty binder in the position shown in Fig. 1, the covers broken away for lack of space.
Fig. 4 is a broken top plan view of the binder, with difierent types of bindings indicated as held in position therein.
The body of the binder illustrated consists of a back 5, and hingedly connected front and back covers 6 and I.
On the inside of the back, a plate 8, is secured by rivets 23, or other suitable fastenings and this plate is shown as having inwardly angled flanges 9 and I8, at the upper and lower ends of the same, spaced apart a distance suflicient' to receive between them the catalogs or other forms of pamphlets indicated at I I.
These pamphlets are illustrated as having different forms of bindings, such as the so-called plastic bindings I2, the Wire-0 bindings I3, and the stitched or stapled bindings I4.
All these and other forms of bindings are held in place in the present invention by the long'pins, rods, or wires I5, extending through opening I6, in the lower flange Ill, through the bound backs of the pamphlets, across the intervening space between the flanges and through corresponding aligned openings IT, in the upper flange 9.
The pin receiving openings in each flange may be arranged in a single row as indicated, substantially parallel and relatively close to the back plate 8, but such openings may be arranged in more or less staggered relation, or in inclined rows, so as some of them to be closer and others further away from the back plate, to suit different kinds of bindings and in some cases to engage the pamphlets closer and in other instances, further away from the bound back edges of the same, thus to provide some latitude for holding variously bound pamphlets as closely confine-d as may be desired against or toward the back plate.
The handling of the long pins, as for inserting them through the openings at one end, passing them through the bindings or bound portions and through the corresponding openings at the opposite end, or, reversely, withdrawing them from such position, is facilitated by provision of the reversely bent handle portions I8.
These reversely bent ends of the pins are further utilized in the present disclosure, as detents for locking the pins in place by provision of the bends I9, to interlock in the openings 20, in the flange Ill.
The extreme ends of the handle portions are shown inclined as cams 2 I, to force easy entrance into the locking openings 20.
The in and out curving of the bent back portion of the handle at I9, provides in effect, abutment or detent shoulders 22, cooperating with the edges of the locking openings to prevent accidental release of the pins and the reverse bending of the handle into the general U-shaped formation, gives this structure a spring quality, assuring the pins being properly retained, but enabling them to be readily snapped into or pulled out of position in the binder.
The back plate and end flanges form a partial guard and enclosure for the catalogs or other books, protecting them to some extent, from rough handling, such for instance, as catalog binders may be subjected to. This base structure or frame also braces and reinforces the back and cover portions which then may be of relatively light and inexpensive construction. One or any number of pamphlets may be held in the binder and these may be of various thicknesses and forms of bindings. The pins are easily slipped through the bindings or through the bound portions of the leaves, dependent upon the type of binding The multiplicity of openings in each flange enables the pamphlets to be spaced according to their thickness or located wherever desired in the binder. In the case of a particularly heavy book or pamphlet, more than one pin may be passed through the binding, as indicated for instance, at the top in Fig. 4, where it is shown that two or more pins may be used, thus in efiect to more firmly anchor the binding in place in the binder.
What is claimed is:
1. A binder for a multiplicity of pamphlets having difierent kinds of bindings and comprising a back and attached cover members, a plate on the inside of said back member having inturned flanges at the top and bottom of said back member, each of said flanges having a multiplicity of openings therethrough, pins extending through openings in one flange into engagement in openings in the other flange for retaining different pamphlets in said binder, said pins having reversely bent U-shaped handle portions to pass through certain of said openings, the ends of said handle portions being inclined toward the pins to facilitate entry into openings, said handle portions adjoining said inclined ends being indented to interlock over the edges of the openings in the flange in which said handle portions are engaged.
2. A binder for a multiplicity of pamphlets having different kinds of bindings and comprising a back and attached cover members, a plate on the inside of said back member having inturned flanges at the top and bottom of said back member, each of said flanges having a multiplicity of openings therethrough, pins extending through openings in one flange into engagement in openings in the other flange for retaining different pamphlets in said binder, 00- operating detent shoulders on said pins and one of said flanges for releasably retaining said pins in pamphlet securing position, said pins having return bent U-shaped spring handle portions at one end and said cooperating detent shoulders being disposed on said return bent handle portions and provided by openings in said flange and the return bent ends of said handle portions having inclined cam parts to facilitate entry into said retaining openings.
