MOLD FOR GLASS BOTTLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,091, dated November 16, 1858.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SHINN, of Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Blowing Glass Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a section of a mold constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top View of the saine.

This invention consists in constructing the molds in which glass bottles are blown, partly of clay, plaster 9 Paris, or other of the earthy matters commonly employed for such purpose, and partly of metal substantially as hereinafter specified, whereby the advantages of the two materials are combined in such a manner as to make a mold superior to one made entirely of either material like the molds commonly used.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The mold shown is for blowing druggists vials, but the same construction is applicable to molds for all kinds of bottles.
A is the portion of the'mold for forming the sides of the body of the bottle consisting of a block of clay. This block A, is clamped between two cast iron plates B, C, by screw bolts D, D, and by nuts CZ, cZ, and these plates may have recesses or rims to receive within them the top and bottom of the block A. The lower plate B, constitutes the bottom of the mold and forms the bottoni of the bottle. The upper plate O, has a central opening for the shoulders of the bottle, and serves to attach the iron jaw-like portions E, E, of the mold, which portions form the shoulders, neck, and mouth of the bottle. These last mentioned portions of the mold are fitted into slots a, a, in the top plate C, and connected with the said plate by hinge joints; b, Z), are the pins of the said joints. The two portions E, E, of the mold, which open to permit the withdrawal of the bottles have weighted levers F, F, at tached to them in such a manner that the said portions open when the levers are left free; but. said portions can be closed by drawing on a cord or cords c, c, passing through eyes e, c, on said levers, the said cords either being operated by hand or by a treadle; or they may be opened and closed by other mechanical agency. A bottle is represented in the mold in Fig. l, in red color. By constructing the molds in this way I obtain the smooth and finished appearance which the clay plaster, or earthy mold gives to the body of the bottle, and the advantages which result from constructing the movable portions of the mold of metal, viz., the durability of the mold and deliniteness in the form of the shoulders, neck and mouth of the bottles.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
The mold constructed with its stationary portion A, of clay, plaster, or material of similar character, clamped between plates B, O, and the opening portions E, E, of metal hinged to the upper clamping plate C, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
