Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN B. CORNELL, OF NEW YORK, N` Y.
'HINGE-EYE FOR SHUTTERS.
Speccation of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-IN B. CORNELL, of the city, count-y, and State of New York, have invented a new Manufacture in the Shape of an Improved Hinge-Eye Vhich is Designed to Form the Anchored Portion of a Shutter-Hinge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXa-ct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l, is a top-view of my improved hinge-eye; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section in the line y, y, of Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a section in the line as, of Fig. l, representing the form of the cap and spindle which are combined with the mold for the purpose of chill-hardening the top and interior portion of the eye-hole of said hinge-eye.
My invention consists in producing a hinge-eye, for the reception of the pivot-portion of the shutter-hinge, which possesses two valuable improvements, viZ :-First. The said hinge-eye is supplied with a wing, which enables it to be built into a wall; and second, the inner periphery and the upper face of the eye-hole is chill-hardened during the process of casting, which gives very great durability to the said hinge-eye. This is a matter of great importance, as the said hinge-eye cannot be removed from its place, after it has been built into a wall, without 19,076, dated January 12, 1858.
cutltling out and defacing a portion of said wa I am aware that hinge-pivots have been cast into the wingedeportions of shutterhinges; and I am also aware that the said pivots frequently work loose and drop out of their places, when it is very difficult, if not impossible to replace them.
I do not claim to be the inventor of the skeleton-wing which forms a portion of my improved hinge-eye, nor do I abstractly claim the ohill-hardening of any portion of said hinge-eye; but- What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new manufacture, is-
The within described improved hinge-eye; the said hinge-eye consisting of a chill-hardened eye-hole-projection cast in one piece with a wing of suitable shape for its being built into a wall, substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification of my newv manufacture in the shape of an improved hinge eye, which forms the anchored portion of a shutter-hinge, signed and witnessed this 23rd day of November A. D. 1857.
JOHN B. CORNELL.
