The present invention relates to railway car doors and more particularly to car doors which move horizontally of the car construction for closing openings in the side walls of such cars.

In each instance, there is likewise provided a pocket 5 to receive sparks, cinders or other extraneous matter which may pass downwardly through the channelway to the open space at the bottom of the door.
In Figure 8, the member #2 is substantially U-shaped in cross section and being secured, in any conventional manner, to flange 8, engages the inner surfaces of the flanges 3 and and main body portion 2 and forms a spark-seal pocket 15 as described in the other views.
The rear commercial shape, as illustrated in Figure 3, has its main body portion 2 bent at right angles to its normal plane and extending rearwardly therefrom to provide the flange 5 The rearwardly extending flange i of the rear commercial shape, is deformed at right angles and extends inwardly from the main plane of the door and is in substantial parallelism with the main body portion 2 Secured thereto, any conventional manner, is a member it provided with a laterally extending flange H which is adapted to form a wedged contact with the flange (8 of the rear stop member l9 secured to the rear door post 28. Therefore, there is pr vided a sealing pocket adapted to receive cinders or the like that might seep past the member It.
The top commercial shape, as illustrated in Figure 2, has the flange member 5' bent at right angles to the main body portion 2 so that it is in substantial parallelism with the flange 3*, thereby forming across the top of the door, a substan tially trough-shaped channelway. Secured to the side plate 2|, in any conventional manner, is a member 22 inclined outwardly and downwardly and terminating in a flange 23 in substantial parallel relation to the flange 5. Secured to the member 22, in any conventional manner, is a plate 24 having a downwardly extending flange 25 in parallel relation to the flange 3 and positioned between said flange 3 and the depend ng flange portion of the side plate 2i. Under such a construction, there is provided a spark-seal for the top of the door, which requires sparks, cind or other extraneous matter to pass upwardly through the space between the flange and flange 5 into the trough-like passageway where it is trapped rather than continue upwardly and then downwardly through the space between the flanges 3 and 25.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 11, the side plate 2! has secured thereto, in any conventional manner, the commercial shape 24 which is provided with a flange 25 extending over the flange 3*. A cover plate 22 is secured, in any conventional manner, to the flange 25 and extends outwardly and downwardly therefrom so as to form a flange 23' positioned to overlie the flange 5 of the door frame. Such a construction forms, as in Figure 2, a pocket or clean nelway l5 in communication with the pocket provided at the front edge of the door and with the open rear end thereof.
The bottom commercial shape, as illustrated in Figure 2 includes the main body portion 2 bent downwardly at right angles thereto to provide the flange 5 in spaced parallel relation to the flange 4. The flange 3 is secured, in any conventional manner, to the panel of the door. The flange 4 has its end portion 26 bent inwardly of the main plane of the door, with said portion 26 being substantially parallel to the main body portion 2 and adapted to snugly rest upon the flange 2? of the threshold plate support 28 when the door is in closed position. The threshold plate 29 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 35!. When the door is in closed position, as shown in Figure 2, it becomes apparent that there is produced a spark-seal for the bottom of the door, and should any sparks or cinders seep past the seal between flanges 2G and 27, it would then be trapped within the pocket 3i.
Under such a construction as hercinabovc described, there is provided a car door having spark-sealing means on all four sides. The spark-seal pocket formed at the front edge of the door extends vertically throughout the entire length of said door and communicates, at the top, with the trough-shaped channelway while the lower end of the pocket is open, which permits sparks or other extraneous matter to drop down through the bottom of the door into open space. The upper pocket or channelway is also in com-- munication with the open rear edge of the door so that extraneous matter accumulating therein can empty into the open space formed at the rear door edge. The bottom spark-seal pocket precludes sparks or extraneous matter from entering into the interior of the car due to the flange iii! deflecting any sparks which might seep past the contact point between flanges 26 and 2'! into pocket 3!.
While I have shown and described specific embodiments of the present invention, it will be seen that I do not wish to be limited exactly thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the inveniion as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a front stop member, a railway car door including a plurality of commercial shapes rigidly connected together to provide a continuous frame structure and including a commercial shape T-shape having its leg bent parallel to one of its flanges to provide extending spaced flanges forming a spark-seal pocket.
2. A door for a railway car comprising front, rear, top and bottom commercial shapes rigidly connected together to provide a continuous frame structure, a panel secured to said frame structure, each of said commercial shapes comprising a main body portion extending outwardly from the plane of the door opening, spaced flanges formed integral with said main body por-- tion and at right angles thereto so as to extend outwardly and door frame parts adapted to form with said flanges a spark and weather-seal pocket around the door.
3. A railway car door comprising commercial shapes rigidly connected together to provide a continuous frame structure, a panel connected to said frame structure, the front commorci l shape comprising a main body portion extend outwardly from the plane of the door opening, a flange integral with said main body portion and at right angles thereto, a portion of said main body portion bent at right angles thereto and in spaced parallel relation to said first mentioned flange, a front stop member for said door. said step including an outwardly extending flange combining with the flanges of said front comm-er cial shape to provide a spark-seal pocket extending throughout the entire length of said door structure.
