The plate 54 is also secured to the flange 59 of the member 51 by a weld 60. A track 61 is disposed below the door opening 16 and this track is welded to a plurality of spaced supporting plates 62 which are in turn welded to the vertical flange of the side sill reinforcement 22. The track 61 and the top retainer 56 serve to support and hold a door in vertical position on the side wall so that it can be moved in a direction parallel to the side wall to a position covering the door opening 16 or to a position removed from the door opening.
The present door opening construction is particularly adapted for a door of the type that is first slid longitudinally of the car in a position parallel with the side wall to the door opening and upon the door covering the opening is moved transversely of the car to fully closed position where the inner face of the door bears against the web 42 of the threshold 40.
It is to be noted that the side sill is completely cut away across the door opening and that a support is interposed between the side sill sections which has a flange interposed between the ends of `the cross lmembers and the side sill reinforcement. It is to be noted also that the floor is spaced inwardly from the door opening so that a door that is movable transversely of the car into and out of the door opening can be moved to a position where the inner face of the door is flush with the side wall inside lining which is the fully closed position and the inner face of the door bears against the web of the threshold member. The cross members, the support, the floor, the side sill reinforcement, the threshold, and the wear plate together form a construction at the bottom edge of the door opening that is of great strength. The hat-shaped door post with the plate and the T-shaped member secured thereto also provides a construction of exceptional strength at the front and rear edges of the door opening. The two Z-shaped members and the plate and the T-shaped member together provide a construction that will withstand great stresses at the top edge of the door opening.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided various constructions at the bottom, top, front, .and rear edges of the door opening which together form a door opening construction that will withstand great impacts and forces and will maintain the rectangular shape of the door opening.
