I 7 Claims.
This invention relatesztoan advertising display device.
- :Inzthe: type of advertising display cards'which is characterized by a: cut out .portion or portions, covered by translucent, colored and illustrated screens, and lightedbythe ordinaryelectriclamp disposed at the rear. thereof, the cardboard has to be of very substantial thickness and weight, and more often than notthestructureis. reinforced with metal or wooden strips. For shipping,
purposes such devices have to be folded or knocked iidOWIL; and; shipped .fiat. The weight of asuchstructures causes .a very large expenditure for freight. and parcel post charges.
One of the objects of. this invention is to pro- -videzan advertisingadevice made of cardboard .soithin and light asto besuil'iciently pliable to :be rolled intocompactform, in small space,'.so that the cost of carriage isvery lowand in contemplation of..this object, the device comprises .a. sheet of thin "corrugated cardboard which may be rolled and disposed in .theoordinary shipping carton to be vsent through: parcel post.
5 A further, object 50f the invention is to provide 'a, construction ;;which, when rolled, effectively :wraps an electriclamp and its carton and electrical connections. so thatacomplete unit may be sent in one packagecwithout danger ofbreaking the frangible parts :andi to this extent the invention .may be :said; to "be. a complete advertising package. I. o
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which may be easily and cheaply made with the ordinaryequipment used in cardboard article manufacturing plants and one which may be easily and quickly assembled or taken apart.
A further object is to provide a substantial and sturdy reinforcing means for the cardboard sheet when it is bent and placed in position for use, and to this end comprehends aflat brace having rounded ends and recesses to receive the ends of the cardboard and which will securely hold the ends of the device together. When the cardboard .completely covers the back of the device to prevent the passage of light to the rearward thereof a resilient tensioning device may be used to hold any overlap of the display fiat.
A further function of the reinforcing or supporting device used with the cardboard is to firmly hold an illuminating element and to permit the proper ventilation of the device in order to eliminate fire risk.
This application is a division of our applica- :tionSerial Number 190,148, ,filed February 12,
The invention consists of the construction, combination andarrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying.- drawing,. forming part hereof, is illustrated a form of embodiment of the invention, .in which 1 drawing similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in whichz Figure l is a front elevationofthe advertising device assembled'for use, the view being partly brokenaway to show two surfaces;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the, device as- .sembled;
Figure 3 is a transverse horizontal section takenapproximately along line, 3-73; of Figure 1, lookingin the direction indicated by the arrows; .and
Figure 4 is an elevation, of the corrugated card used as the main wall of the device.
Referring'to the drawing, the main wall I is w-made-gfrom; light,;corrugated cardboard and a display, sheet I thereon, and this supporting elementisprovided witha plurality of openings 8- each covered by a sheet 9 of translucent mate- .rialadapted ,to receive ,the colored subject matter of theadvertisement of goods which are intended to be illustrated, or to be affixed to the front surface of the main wall 1.
In forming the supporting element it is provided with an extension of the cover display sheet I!) at one end and with rounded shoulders I M at its top so that when the sheet is folded around its supporting and reinforcing members they are not Viewed from the front of the device. On opposite sides of the extension of the display sheet and on the main body of the sheet 1 there are formed shoulders I I adapted to contact the end Walls of the. slots 22 hereinafter described. When folded in position for use the ends of the sheet I are brought to an overlapping position, as best shown in Figure 2, and are retained in position by means of hooks l2 set into the sheet 1 and resilient connecting means I3 which may readily take the form of the ordinary rubber bands passing over the oppositely disposed hooks l2.
When the cardboard sheet 1 is bent into the position shown in Figure 2: An upper bracing wall I4 is disposed within the cardboard adjacent its upper edge and a lower bracing and supporting wall I is disposed within the folded cardboard adjacent its lower end. These bracing walls are preferably made of thin cardboard and openings of the lower supporting wall [5 is dis posed an ordinary electric flasher socket [8. In
this way the lower wall l5 performs the dual function in reinforcing the cardboard sheet I and in supporting an electrical attachment. An
ordinary lamp I9 is disposed in the socket I8 and a suitable electrical connection 20 runs from the socket flasher to an ordinary plug 2|.
In assembling the device for use, the cardboard 'I is bent into the position shown in Figure 3, so that its edges overlap and its upper'and lower edges enter the slots 22 formed in the V edges of the bracing wall l4 and the lower and bracing wall l5. The rubber bands l3 are clipped over the hooks I2 and the shoulders ll contact the end walls of the slots 22 so that a very rigid construction is effected in view of the lightness of all the materials used.
In assembling the device for shipment the parts are separated and packed as disclosed in our co-pending application, of which this is a division, as stated.
Where it is not desired to cut off the light to the rear of the device the supporting wall and its display cover need not be overlapped and we have found that the rear edges thereof are firmly held in the slots 22 by contact and the resistance created by bending the supporting wall. We have further found from experiment that the display sheet 9 may be extended over the entire surface of the wall 1 without disturbing this function.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. Display means comprising asheet of stiff resilient material, a transverse brace member placed at the back thereof, said sheet being contoured about said brace to constitute a support, a display sheet placed against the front of said support, said brace including means adjacent its extremities to receive the ends of saidsupport and display sheet and to localize said brace relatively to said support.
2. Display means comprising a sheet of stiff strand resilient material, a flat transverse brace mem ber placed at the back thereof, said sheet being contoured about said brace to constitute a support, and said brace having localizing clefts to receive the side edges of said support, a display sheet placed against the front of said support, anchorage means on said display sheet, and a extended tensionally between said anchorage means to removably connect said support, brace and display sheet.
3.,Disp1ay means comprising a sheet of stiff resilient material, a transverse brace member placed at the back thereof, said sheet being con= toured about'said brace to constitute a support, a display sheet placed against the front of said support, anchorage means on said display sheet, and a strand extended tensionally between said anchorage means to removably connect said sup port, brace and display sheet.
4. An advertising device comprising a pliable cardboard. sheet provided with an extension merging into shoulders, bracing walls around which the cardboard is bent, the walls being provided with longitudinal slots in which the cardboard is inserted so that the shoulders limit movement thereof and'means for maintaining the edges of the cardboard in overlapped position.
5. An advertising device comprising a pliable,
light corrugated cardboard wall provided with translucent sections and rounded upon itself so that its edges overlap, reinforcing. wallsdisposed within the rounded cardboard and a flasher lamp disposed within the rounded cardboard.
6. An advertising device comprising a Wall of corrugated light weight pliable cardboard provided with translucent sections and bent upon itself, means for maintaining the edges of the bent cardboard in overlapped position, reinforcing and bracing Walls disposed within the'bent cardboard and an electric illuminating element carriedby one of the reinforcing walls.
7. An advertising device comprising a pliable supporting element, a representation display element carried by the supporting element and braces having rounded ends and slots adjacent thereto, the supporting element being bent around the rounded ends and its edges inserted into and held in the slots. 1
