Description

SEAM FOR GARMENT CONSTRUCTICNS Filed OC'b. 18, 1937 FIG.
' JOSEPH S/EGEL.
lNvENTOR ATTORNEY.
Patented Oct. 17, 1939- UNITED STATI-:s
PATENT orrice altezze snm, Fon Gnomi* oonsy'rnvorlons :aupa simi, newyork, n. y. Application, october 1e, roer. sont ne. mocos 2 Chime.
The metallic seam type of ily closure which. has come into somewhat extensive use in connection with mens trousers has several serious disadventages both from the standpoint of properly tailored appearance of the garment and' from the standpoint of comfort of the users'o the sarment.
' As heretofore constructed the two overlappingr fly forming portions of the trousers each carrying a line of metallic teeth concealed by the outer flap of the fly and closed by a slide fastener.
In button type nies thefiap which carries the button holes affords a channel and theeolees of this channel can be conveniently tacked between each button hole so that the danger of the entire outer flap blowing open or opening up oi ite own accord during bending movements 'of the body and thereby exposing the buttons io eliminated. With y structures embodying the slide fastener closures, however, there is no possibility of tactoa ing at intervals to prevent the outer riep from. folding or blowing open since any taolring ivoultl interfere with the manual manipulation of the slide fastener.
As a result the appearance oi the garment is frequently spoiled and the user of the garment embarrassed by the flowing open oi this non which exposes an unsightly shiny line of metallic teeth.
Another serious disadvantage or the slide fostener type of iiy construction as heretofore nseel has been the fact that the oserA was not adequately protected against contact with the Zipper teeth on the outer iiap of the y, with resultant elle comfort, inconvenience and possibility oi injury or infection caused by scratching against e rusten or corroded metal surface.
I By my present invention the metallic seem elem ments are at all times concealed whenthe seam is closed and are at all tir-nes prevented troni con tact with thehody of the wearer when the fly is open.
The improved type of "Zipner ny construction illustrated herein adds but neelieibly to the cost of manufacture.
The invention may be more folly understood from the following description in connection with.
the accompanying drawing wherein,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pair oi troneo-ro equipped `with my improved type oi iiy and show ing the outer ny lap folded hack to illustrate the manner in which the user is thoroughly protected against contact with the zippers,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective View showing theily partially open,
Fig. 3 is a greatly enlarged transverse sectional view on the line ilof los. 2.
Referring with more particularity to the draw-Kv ing. l@ indicates a pair of trousers the iiy opening of which extends from the waist band portion to the crotch region oi the trousers and is formed by an inner dan ll and en outer nap it which loins over the innerap and which is preferably provided at its upper edge with a tab it having a hutten hole ill therein for engagement with a button it on the waistband of the trousers.
Spacca inwardly from the edge of the under non or inner nap l l and secured to the inner iap oy a line of stitching lo is a ilexible tooth carrying stripA il, the teeth it oi" this strip constituting part of e. metallic seam. Space@ inwardly and secured on the inner or" the outer flap i2 is e similar tooth carrying strip le secured under tire nap i2 by a line of stitching the teeth 2i oi this rtrip coaching nfitothe teeth iii oi the opnosite strip il to cooperatively denne a metallic which may lieonened or closeol ley a slide fastener lljeretoiore in the event the 'outer riep i2 n the line oi? e i'astener was exposed. tiene. no protection against tile teeth 2i on the lnthe oser was liable to scratch or injure hiermit on these teeth.
lin accordance with the present invention a oi material has its ends secured as by linee oi stltchirngr to to the 'onder flap il. The edge of this strip overlies and conceals the lineof teeth it and the other esige of the strip moy he secured icy one or more linee or stitching to the outer face oi 'the @op il. ri'he strip may he of the same material oi the trousers it tiesireel kor may he oi any other suitable material. .also if desired the line of stitclxing,7 may aio in securing the tooth carrying strip il to the trousers.
i strip 2l corresponding to vthe strip E8 serves to cover the other line oi Zipper teeth 2l.v The strip fil is likewise secured at its entre as hy lines of stitching to the under foce ci the ap i2 and its tree edge projects beyond the teeth ll and thereby guards these teeth against contact with the person of the wearer when the fly is in the open position ci Fin. l.
When the metallic seam is closed it will be apparent from Fig. 2 that the free edge of the strip 23 completely conceals the connected sets otteeth it and 2l, this strip being long enough to completely overlie the metallic seam. Thus if the outer nep l2 blows or folds open from the position oi Fig. 3 the Zipper teeth will still remain invisible. When the seam is closed it lies between the free 4edges oi the two strips 23 and 21. The lfree edge of the strip 23 in no manner i interferes with the convenient grasping' ofy the slide fastener 22 for purposes of opening or closing the y as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the draw- It will thus be seen that there is herein described a device in which the several features of this invention are embodied, and which attain the various objects of the invention and are well Y suited to meet the lrequirements of practical use.
As many apparently widely diierent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim: 1. A fly construction comprising a pair of overlapping trouser sections dening a iiy opening,
- section, and overlapping said second teeth carrya teeth carryingstrip secured to the inner side 'of the outer ily section, and a second teeth carrying strip secured to the outer side of the inner iiy section, said strips cooperating to. deiine ,a metallic seam for closing said fly opening, a slide fastener for opening said seam, a concealing fabric strip secured to the inner side of the outer y section, and overlapping said i'lrst mentioned teeth carrying strip, so that'said latter strip is disposed between said concealing strip and said outer fly section, said concealing fabric strip having its free edge extending outwardly beyond the teeth of said rst mentioned teeth carrying strip a substantial distance, .to cover the teeth of both of said teeth carrying strips in closed 'position of the fly opening, and a second concealing fabric strip secured to the outer-side of the inner fly 'opening therebetween, a teeth carrying strip secured to the inner side of the outer garment section, and a second teeth carrying strip secured to the outer side of the inner garment section, said strips coopera to define a metallic seam `for closing said opening," a slide fastener for opening said seam, a concealing fabric strip. secured to the inner side ci the outer garment section, and overlapping said iirst mentioned teeth carrying strip, so that said latter strip is disposed between said concealing strip and said outer garment section, said concealing fabric strip having its free edge extending outwardly beyond the teeth of said i'lrst mentioned teeth carrying strip a substantial distance, to cover the teeth of both of said teeth carrying strips in closed position of said opening, and a second concealing fabric strip secured to the outer side of the inner garment section, and overlapping said second teeth i carrying strip, so that said latter strip is disposed between said second concealing strip and saidinner garment section, said second concealing fabric strip having its free edge extending outwardly beyond the teeth of said second teeth carrying strip a substantial distance to cover the teeth of' both of said teeth carrying strips in closed position of said opening.
