This invention relates to a combined seat and cover for use on toilets, one of the objects being to provide a device for use as the cover for the ordinary toilet seat but which includes as a part thereof a seat having an opening smaller than usual for use by children, this childs seat being normally concealed within a shell movable relative thereto, the shell and supplemental seat normally cooperating to present the appearance of an ordinary seat cover when viewed from either the top or bottom.

A further object is to provide simple and efficient means for holding the supplemental seat and its shell or cover assembled so that they can swing together into and out of position on the main seat.

Another object is to provide a combined supplemental seat and cover which can be manufactured at low cost and can be substituted readily for the usual seat cover.

With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawing Figure l is a side elevation of a toilet hopper equipped with the present improvement, the two seats and cover being shown in section.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the latch portions of the supplemental seat and cover.

Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3, Figure 2.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference H designates the usual toilet hopper provided with a seat S which is hingedly mounted in the usual Way, as indicated at A.

The present invention comprises a supplemental seat I having an opening 2 therein smaller than the usual opening and this supplemental cover is mounted on the hinge A in the usual manner of a lid so as to be able to swing into or out of position on the main seat S. In Figure 1 the supplemental seat has been shown by dotted lines in lowered position and by full lines in raised position.

Also connected to the hinge A are one or more arms 3 extending backwardly from a cover 4 formed of sheet metal or any suitable plastic material, this cover or shell being so shaped as to fit snugly upon the top surface of the supplemental seat and also about and against the marginal portion of the seat. It is also preferred to provide the shell or cover 4 with an extension or enlargement 5 on the lower or concave surface thereof, this extension being so proportioned as to fit snugly within the opening 2 and, when so seated, the flat bottom surface of the extension will be flush with the corresponding surface of the supplemental seat.

In the forward portion of the bottom surface of seat I there is formed a groove Ii the inner surface of which can be covered by a wear plate l. Adjacent to this point the cover or shell 4 has a forwardly extended portion 8 providing a recess between the margin of the shell or cover 4 and the adjacent portion of the supplemental seat I. Secured to the margin of the seat so as to be supported in this recess is a leaf spring 9 having its free end folded or otherwise thickened to form a head I adapted normally to project into the groove 6 and under the plate 'I so as to engage the plate and thus hold the shell or cover 4 against swinging movement independently of the supplemental seat I.

The supplemental seat and its cover or shell are so shaped and proportioned that, when they are assembled, they have the appearance of ordinary seat cover and as the extension has its lower surface flush with the corresponding surface of seat I, this appearance is retained whether the seat is in opened or closed position. Thus under normal conditions the parts I and 4 cooperate to provide the usual seat cover.

When it is desired to use the supplemental seat I, it is necessary merely to insert a finger into the groove 6, and to pull the head I0 outwardly from under the plate I whereupon the cover or shell 4 can be swung upwardly independently of supplemental seat I which latter can be left in position on the seat S.

What is claimed is:

A cover for toilet seats including a supplemental seat having an opening, said supplemental seat having a latch-engaging surface at the bottom thereof, a shell proportioned to fit snugly upon and around the supplemental seat, said shell having an extension normally projecting into and illing the opening in the supplemental seat, means carried by the supplemental seat and shell respectively for connection with a hopper to permit independent swinging movement of the shell and supplemental seat, and a latch within and carried by the shell for engagement with said latch-engaging surface of the supplemental seat to hold the shell and supplemental seat against relative movement, there being a clearance between the shell and supplemental seat for the reception of the latch when disengaged from said seat.
