2 Claims. (Cl. 4239) This invention relates to a childs toilet seat which is formed in the cover of the usual toilet seat, the parts of the childs seat conforming to the general contour of the seat cover so that the usual appearance of the cover is approximately the same as that of a cover without the addition of the childs seat.

An object of my invention is to provide a novel childs toilet seat in a seat cover in which the arm portions are recessed into the cover and are not cut entirely through the seat, thus more nearly conforming to the usual contour of a toilet seat cover.

Another object of my invention is to provide a novel means whereby the auxiliary cover is held in both raised and lowered position by the same spring construction.

A feature of my invention is to provide a novel childs toilet seat and cover which is sturdy in construction and which will effectively hold the child in position without danger of falling.

Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the usual and Well known type of toilet seat and 2 a cover which normally rests on the seat. The cover 2 is formed in the following manner, so that a smaller childs seat is provided:

An opening 3 is cut in the cover 2 and an auxiliary cover 4 fits this opening and can be raised or lowered, as will be subsequently described. The auxiliary cover 4 is formed with a transversely extending plate 5 which is preferably integrally formed with the auxiliary cover 4. The plate 5 is hingedly attached to the main cover 2 by a pair of hinges 6-6 of a suitable type. A pair of arms 7-8 are hingedly secured to the plate 5 by suitable hinges 910, respectively. The arms 7 and 8 are of lesser thickness than the cover 2 and, therefore, suitable recesses 11-12 are cut in the cover 2 to receive the arms 7S, respectively. When the arms 7-8 are lowered the top surface of these arms conforms to the normal top surface of the cover 2 and also the outer edges of the arms 78 conform to the curve of the outer edge of the cover 2, thus providing a cover which has very nearly the usual appearance of a toilet seat cover.

2 spectively, thereby supporting the front end of these arms when the arms are raised, as shown in Figure 3. It will also be noted that the back portion of the seat 2 is also recessed, asshown at 15, this recess receiving the plate 5 so that the top surfaceof the cover will be substantially smooth when the auxiliary cover, the arms 7 and 8 and the plate 5 are lowered.

A metal fitting 16 is fastened to the cover 2 at the rear thereof and this fitting includes a rearwardly extending tongue 17 which terminates in an upwardly inclined part 18. A spring blade 19 is attached to the under portion of the auxiliary cover 4 or to the plate 5 and this spring extends into the recess formed by the tongue 17, substantially as shown. Outwardly projecting fingers 20 on the blade 19 engage the bottom of the fitting 16 when the auxiliary cover 4 is raised, thus holding the cover in its raised position. Also the spring 19 flexes forwardly in this position, as shown in Figure 4, thus tending to hold the auxiliary cover 4 in a raised position with a certain amount of springtension. To lower the auxiliary cover 4 the spring 19 is pushed rearwardly and the auxiliary cover 4 is then lowered on its hinges 6. The spring 19 will be caused to move upwardly on the inclined part 18 of the tongue 17, thus again flexing the spring 19 so as to tend to hold the auxiliary cover 4 in a lowered position with a certain amount of spring tension. In lowered position the auxiliary cover 4, the arms 78 and the plate 5 all conform to the normal contours of the main cover 2, both on its top and bottom surfaces, thus enabling the cover to be readily cleaned, as necessary.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. In a childs toilet seat and cover, said cover having an opening extending therethrough, an auxiliary cover adapted to fit in said opening in one position of said auxiliary cover and flush with the top surface of the toilet seat, a plate projecting transversely from the auxiliary cover, the cover having a recess in the top thereof to receive said plate, said plate being flush with the top surface of the cover in the closed position of the auxiliary cover, means hingedly mounting the plate to said cover, a pair of arms, means hingedly securing one of the arms on each outer end of said plate, said cover having a recess one on each side thereof and one for each of said arms, the last named recesses in the cover being shaped to accurately receive said arms, and said arms being flush with the top surface of the cover in the closed position of the arms, said arms conforming in contour to the outer edge of the cover, and links pivotally secured at one end to said cover and at the other end to an arm, said last named recesses in the cover being less than the thickness of the cover and said arms being less than the thickness of the cover.

2. In a childs toilet seat and cover, said cover having an opening extending therethrough, an auxiliary cover adapted to fit in said opening in one position of said auxiliary cover and flush with the top surface of the toilet seat, a plate projecting transversely from the auxiliary cover, the cover having a recess in the top thereof to receive said plate, said plate being flush with the top surface of the cover in the closed position of the auxiliary cover, means hingedly mounting the plate to said cover, a pair of arms, means hingedly securing one of the arms on each outer end of said plate, said cover having a recess one on each side thereof and one for each of said arms, the last named recesses in the cover being shaped to accurately receive said arms, and said arms being flush with the top surface of the cover in the closed position of the arms, said arms conforming in contour to the outer edge of the cover, and links pivotally secured at one end to said cover and at the other end to an arm, said last named recesses in the cover being less than the thickness of the cover and attached at one end to the auxiliary cover, said fitting having an'opening in the top thereof through whichjthe spring blade extends, and said blade contacting the tongue, an upwardly inclined part on the rear of the tongue, said blade resting on the inclined part in the closed position of the auxiliary cover to resiliently press the auxiliary cover into closed position.
