Aug. 29, 1939. F. zAccARo ET AL AUTOMATIC HAIR WAVING COMB AND CLAMP DEVICE Original Filed Feb. 16, 1938 INVENTORS Frank 2 ffi /(ion CAlilose's ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 29,1939
PATENT OFFICE AUTOMATIC HAIR WAVING COMB AND CLAMP DEVICE Frank Zaccaro and Phokion G. Milosis. New York, N. Y.
Application February 16, 1938, Serial No. 190,756 Renewed February 11, 1939 17 claims. (01. 132-31 7 'This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined hair waving comb and clamp device.
More specifically, the invention proposes the 55 construction of a combined comb and clamp device characterized by a pair of cooperative clamp jaws pivotally connected together and having a comb interposed between the jaws and pivotal- 1y supported coaxially with the jaws.
Another object of this invention is to provide means for urging said jaws closed to clamp and hold a wave formed in a strand of hair and positioned upon said comb.
Still further it is proposed to form cam elements on the comb and engageable betweenthe clamp jawsfor holding the comb centrally of said jaws and firmly extended therefrom in the open condition of the jaws so that the comb may be passed through the hair for forming the wave.
Still further it is proposed to provide a means for holding the comb in various fixed positions with relation to its axis of pivoting for changing the distance between the edge of the comb and the bottom edges of the cooperative clamp jaws.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be hadto the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying-drawing forming amaterial part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combined hair waving comb and clamp device constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. P
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the comb per se. 1 l Fig. 6 is an elevational viewof an automatic hair waving comb and clamp device constructed according to a modification of the invention.
4'3 Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 1--1 of Fig 6 .V
Fig. 8 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. 7.
The combined hair waving comb and clamp device, according to this invention, comprises a pair of cooperative clamp jaws. I0 pivotally con nected together with each other and having han dles I I] by which they may be conveniently opened, The clamp jaws are formed with a means for urgi them closed an a, comb ll-is interposed between the jaws II] and is pivotally supported coaxial with the jaws and is formed with cam elements l2 which are adapted to be engaged by the handles I0 of the jaws II) for holding the comb II centrally of said jaws and firmly ex- 5 tended therefrom.
' The jaws II] are formed from metal, Bakelite, or other similar material and have arcuately shaped bottom edges lo and are convexed away from each other to form a hollow between the adja- 10 cent faces thereof into which the comb II extends. Inwardly extending lugs l3 are formed at the top of the clamp jaws Ill and have openings I4 through which a pivot pin l5 extends for pivotally connecting together the jaws I0. The l5 means for urging the jaws closed comprisesa spring I6 coaxially mounted upon the pivot pin I5 and having one of its ends I 6 abutting against thetop face of one of the handles Ill and having the other of its ends I6 abutting against the top 2 face of the other handle Ill Thus the spring l6 tends to urge the handles l0 apart for urging the jaws Ill together.
The comb II has the bottom ends'of its teeth arranged in an arc II corresponding with the 25 shape of the bottom edges of the clamp jaws II]. The cams I2 are formed with foot portions I 2" which engage around the top edge of the comb l I, and the cams are formed with a centrally disposed opening l2 through which the pivot pin 30 I5 extends for pivotally supporting the comb l l coaxially with the jaws Ill. At the top the cams I2 are formed with sloping side walls I2 which are adapted to be engaged by the inner face of the handles Ill in the open position of the jaws I0 to 35 hold the comb I I centrally of the jaws and firmly extended therefrom so that it may be easily passed through ones hair for forming a wave.
The operation of this device is as follows:
Whenit is desired to form a wave in ones hair 40 the handles I0 are urged togetherto open the clamp jaws ID to the position shown by the dot and dash lines ID in Fig. 3. When the jaws I!) are in their open position the inner faces of the handles I0 will bear against the sloping sides I2 .15 of the cam I2 for holding the comb II firmly extended from the jaws I0 so that it may be passed 7 through the hair for forming the wave. After the wave has been completely formed on the comb II the handles I0 are released to permit the 5C prings [6 to again close theclamp jaws I0 upon the hair positioned upon the comb I l for holding the wave in'its fixed position.
According to the modification shown in Figs.
6-8 inclusive means is pr v for holding the comb in fixed positions with relation to the axis of pivoting for changing the distance between the bottom edge of the comb and the bottom edges of the jaws. The sides of the jaws Ill are also formed with openings 20 through which the air may circulate for drying the hair positioned upon the comb II.
The means for holding the comb in shifted positions comprises a slot 2| formed in the cam l2 and into which a spring 22 is mounted. The end 22 of the spring 22 is fixedly attached to one fo f the side walls of the slot 2|. The other end .22 extends upward along the other side of the slot 22 and is formed with half-circular depressions 23 arranged in aligned positions with complementary half-circular depressions 24 formed in the adjacent side wall of the slot 2]. The halfcircular depressions 23 and 24 are adapted to cooperate with each other to form an opening through which the pivot pin I is adapted to pass.
The pivot pin l5 may be shifted along the length of the slot so as to pass through either of the openings formed by the cooperating depressions 23 and 24 for holding the comb I l in various extended positions with relation to the pin I5. The handles ll] are formed with inwardly and upwardly extending leaf springs 25 which are adapted to engage against the bottom edges of the cams I2 in the closed position of the clamp jaws ID for holding the comb ll centrally of the jaws. The handles l0 are also formed with inwardly and downwardly extending leaf springs 26 which are adapted to engage the sloping side walls I 2 of the cam l2 in the open position of the clamp jaws ID for holding the comb ll centrally of the jaws and firmly extended therefrom so that it may be passed through a strand of hair for forming a wave. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form and similar parts may be identified by corresponding reference numerals.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
