8 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in smokers or pipes, especially magazine pipes of the type disclosed in my patents, Numbers 2,035,782 and 2,035,783, dated March 31, 1936. In general,
the objects of the invention are to provide a pipe having a simplied construction which facilitates the manufacture thereof, enhances the appearance of the pipe and improves the smoking qualities. More specifically, the invention provides a pipe which may have a tobacco storage chamber as in the patented constructions or which may dispense with said chamber but which has improved nicotine arresters as well as means permitting the removal of the pipe bowl when hot and the substitution of a cool bowl. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description of one embodiment of the invention which is shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication.
In said drawings- Fig. l is a perspective view of a magazine pipe or smoker;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view on a larger scale of the pipe of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 but showing the pipe bowl depressed to receive a new supply of tobacco and showing in dotted lines one position of a finger as it may be employed to feed tobacco into the depressed bowl;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 6 6 of Fig. 3.
Referring specifically to the drawings there is shown a smoker or pipe comprising a body I5, a pipe stem I6 and a bowl I1. In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1 the body I5 has a relatively large interior chamber I8 for holding a supply of tobacco I9. A hinged lid 20 is provided preferably at the top of the tobacco-storage chamber I8 to permit the said storage chamber to be filled with a fresh supply of tobacco. The
forward or free end of the lid 20 preferably abuts against the bowl I'l at its upper end.
The bowl I'I is adapted to slide vertically or, in other words, it is designed to be reciprocated relative to the body on which it is mounted. The
preferred means for permitting reciprocation of the bowl comprises a T-head or extension 2| extending longitudinally of the bowl and fitting a T-slot 22 formed on the body. The bowl is adapted to be depressed by the fingers of the user until its mouthpiece is below the discharge end (Cl. ISL-180) 23 of the tobacco-storage chamber I8, as will be understood from Fig. 4. When the bowl is in this position the tobacco I9 may be shaken or pushed out of the storage chamber into the mouth of the bowl and may be packed by the fingers in thej usual manner. It will be understood that the storage chamber will hold several bowlfulls of tobacco so that the user may enjoy the luxury of prolonged smoking without replenishing the supply from a tobacco can. When the pipe is not in t10 use the bowl Il and the lid 20 eifectually seal the interior of the storage chamber I6 so that the tobacco remains in perfect condition.
At the bottom of the bowl chamber I'la two or more vertical ducts 24 are provided. said vertical 1I! ducts being preferably of small diameter and preferably communicating directly with a larger horizontal smoke duct 25 which extends to the exterior of the bowl.
To hold the bowl in either of the extreme posi- '20 tions illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, bowl-locking means is provided which is preferably a springactuated plunger 26. As shown, the plunger 26 has a central aperture 26a and is hollow and reciprocable in a counter-bore 2l formed in the `25 body I8. A coil spring 28 is also located in the counter-bore 21 and forces the plunger 26 normally outwardly so that the plunger may engage with the end of duct 25, when the bowl is in the position of Fig. 3, or with a depression or notch $0 29 provided at the upper end of the bowl, when the bowl is in the depressed position illustrated in Fig. 4. The bowl-engaging end of the plunger 26 is rounded, as shown, so that no great resistance is oiered when the user of the pipe attempts 35 to move the bowl from one locked position to the other.
I prefer to employ with the bowl-locking means just described a nicotine arrester which may be mounted partly in the counter-bore 21. Said D nicotine arrester may comprise a hollow member 30 having the form of a cylinder at one end and having aperture 30*it through which smoke may enter from the bowl I'I. Said nicotine arrester n also has a Venturi portion 3l which is located acl- 45 jacent the cylindrical portion 30 and which provides a trap for uids rich in nicotine which may collect in the chamber 30. The nicotine arrester also has a conical portion 32 connected with the venturi and communicating directly with the 50 smoke conduit 33. Preferably the smoke conduit is a small pipe having screw threads at either end, as shown, and lying in the bottom of the storage chamber I8.
Preferably a second nicotine arrester is prou vided near the mouthpiece I6. As shown, the second nicotine arrester comprises a hollow cylindrical member 34 which is located in a small hollow chamber 35 provided in the body I5. The cylindrical member 34 may be a nicotine-absorbing member or may be simply a metallic cylinder. It should be of large diameter relative to the bore 36 of the mouthpiece i6 and the bore 31 of the small conduit member 38 which is screwed into the body I5 to make connection with the smoke conduit 33. Preferably the adjacent end of the smoke conduit 33 is screw threaded into the conduit member 38, as shown, and the member 38 is screwed into the body I5. A second conduit member 39 is screw threaded into a counter-bore provided on the inner end of the pipe stem I6. Preferably the conduit members 38 and 39 are integral with the cylindrical member 34. It is obvious that the pipe stem is held to the body by the screw threads of the conduit member 39 and hence the pipe stem may be removed separately or if desired the assembly comprising the pipe stem and the cylinder 34 with its attached conduits may be removed from the pipe for cleaning or renewal. The screw threaded smoke conduit 33 may also be removed with this assembly as the parts will all turn together if the screw threads are in the proper direction.
The present invention p-rovides an extremely simple pipe or smoker which permits the user to replenish the supply as often as may be desired until the magazine or storage compartment is empty. The bowl may also be removed for cleaning or if desired for replacement with another bowl, as when the bowl becomes too hot for comfort. It is also obvious that the nicotine arresters may be easily removed for cleansing or renewal and that all the parts of the pipe may be readily cleaned, thus insuring a cool, sweet smoke at all times'. The described form of the invention has other advantages over the pipe shown in the aforesaid patents, as will be obvious to the user.
Obviously the invention may be embodied in numerous forms neither described nor shown.
Having described several embodiments of the invention which are preferred above others known to me, what I claimI as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A magazine pipe comprising, in combination, a body having a hollow interior providing a tobacco-storage chamber; a pipe stem secured to one end of the body; a pipe bowl mounted on the .other end of the body; a smoke conduit connecting the bowl end with the pipe stem; said bowl being vertically reciprocable on guides formed on the body; and a spring-actuated lock on the body engaging the bowl when moved to its lowermost position and also when moved to its uppermost position to lock the bowl in either position; the mouth of said bowl being below the tobaccostorage chamber when the bowl is in the lowermost position so that tobacco may then be moved from the chamber to the bowl.

3. The invention according to claim 1, wherein the spring-actuated lock is hollow to permit passage of smoke therethrough directly to the smoke conduit, with which it is connected.
4. 'I'he invention according to claim 1, wherein the body has a small hollow chamber in the wall at the end where the pipe stem is attached, and a removable hollow cylinder is tted in said hollow chamber, the pipe stem connecting with one end of the removable, hollow cylinder and the smoke conduit connecting with the other end thereof, said removable, hollow cylinder having a diameter which isI large compared with the bores of said conduit and pipe stern.
5. A magazine pipe comprising, in combination, a body having a hollow interior compartment for tobacco storage; a pipe stem and a pipe bowl attached to said body, and a smoke conduit con- Vnecting the bowl and stem; means formed on the body and bowl for holding and guiding the bowl, which is vertically reciprocable; and bowllocking means comprising a spring-actuated plunger on the body engaging the bowl to hold the same in its lowermo-st position relative to the body, so that tobacco may be dumped into the bowl from the storage compartment, said bowllocking means also engaging the bowl in its uppermost position wherein the storage compartment is clos-ed by the bowl.
6. The invention according to claim 5, wherein the plunger of the bowl-locking means is hollow to permit smoke to pass therethrough to the smoke conduit.
