IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,517, dated May 20, 1879 application filed June 17, 1878.

"To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY HEATH, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Made-up Summer Scarfs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of scarfs for gentlemens wear which are made up to be secured in place by a narrow tie passing around the neck.

It consists, first, in manufacturing the scarf out of light wash goods for. summer wear, as hereinafter described, sothat it may be opened into a simple form for washing and ironing,

and be then readily refolded into proper form it for use; and, second, in combining, with a made-up scarf for summer wear, a detachable pin and a stiffening-shield, to be removed when the scarf is to be washed, and replaced with ease when it has been ironed and properly refolded for wear.

. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the front, and Fig. 2 of the reverse or under side, of my improved summer scarf made ready for wear. Fig. 3 is a view of the same opened out into its simple form for washing and ironing and Fig. 4 is a similar view with the loop piece folded over the front, in

readiness to be again folded down and fastened on the back to form the loop for the tie. The scarf is made up of a simple scarf-stri p, A, Figs. 3 and 4, of any suitable material for summer wear, preferably such as can be washed and nicely done up. Upon this scarf-strip A, midway of its length, is secured, at right angles thereto, a second loop-strip, 13, preferably of the same material. (See Fig. 3.) This second strip B is made to extend or project beyond the lower edge of the strip A sufficiently to admit of being folded up over the front of said scarf strip, and then down again on its rear side far enough to be there fastened to form a loop for the end of the tie of the scarf. Both strips are preferably made double, either by being folded over and secured at the edges or by being lined.

The end W of the loop-strip B, when made double, is left open to form a pocket, (see Fig. 4,) or is otherwise provided with a pocket, for the reception of a stifi piece of card-board, G,

carrying at a suitable angle a pin or stabber, D, as shown in Fig. 4.

The neck-tie band E is secured by one end to the upper edge of the scarf-strip A, at one edge of its loop strip B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the other end being left free to pass, in the customary manner, through the loop formed on the under side of the scarf by the strip B. (See Fig. 2.)

The scarf thus made up is folded into shape by turning the loop-strip B over the front side of the scarf-strip A, (see Fig. 4,) and then down again on the rear, and by turning and pressing down the two ends of the scarf -strip in front at such an angle that they will cross each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and dotted lines, Fig. 4. The detached shieldpiece 0 is then slipped into the pocket in the end WV of the loop-strip B, and confined therein by means of a button -hole, w, in the edge of the strip B, (see Fig. 3,) engaging a button, y, Fig. 4, on the scarf, as shown in Fig. 2, this fastening of the loop-strip serving also to form the loop for the end of the tie.

The scarf, thus properly folded and finished, is readily adjusted and secured in the customary manner for wear by passing the free end of the tie E around the neck under the collar, and then through the loop under the pocket end of the strip B, and fastening the tie by catching it on the end of the stabber or pin D, projecting for the purpose from. the shield C, confined in the pocket.

The shield (1 serves not only to secure the siabber in proper position, but likewise as a 4 stiffening-piece for the center of the scarf; but I contemplate securing the stabber D in position by other detachable fastening independently of the shield G. In such case the shield may be omitted, and the end W of the loop-piece be itself made of thicker material and stiffened in the laundry, or the loop strip and shield both be dispensed with, and a simple loop formed directly upon the rear side of the scarf strip A, to be used, in combination with the detachable stabber D, to secure the end of the tie-band E. y

I contem plate, moreover, the following modifications as equivalents for the devices above described, and as being part of my said invention, viz The loop stripB may be secured to or project from the top instead of from the bottom edge of the scarf-strip, so as to fold down on the back only, instead of 'over the front and then down upon the back, and to serve thus merely as a loop and pocket piece; or the pocket for the shield C may be formed directly upon the under side of the scarf-strip A, instead of in or upon a strip, B, made to fold over the scarf strip, as described, the necessary loop for the tie D being in such case formed under the pocket.

I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the above-described scarf, consisting of the scarfstrip A, loop strip "B, and neck tie band E, constructed, combined, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the scarf strip A, the central loopstrip, B, made fast to thescarf-strip to extend therefrom at a right angle and fold back over its face, the neck-tie band E, having one end loop to catch and secure the free end of theneck-tie band, as described.

3. The combination, with a straight folding scarf-strip, A, having a loop formed centrally upon its inner side to receive the free end of' its attached tie-band E, of a pocket or recess formed in or upon the said loop to receive and retain a removable shield and. pin for the purpose of securing said tie-band, all substantially as herein set forth.

4. The combination, with a folding scarf-- strip, A, and with the free end of its attached neck-tie band E, of a removable pinning de vice orstabber, D, substantiallyin the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
