Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM J. CARROLL, OF NATGHEZ, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT N COTTON-BALEI T|| :s.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,760, dated May 16, 1871; antedated May 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. CARROLL, of Natchez, county of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented an Improved Cotton-Tie, (being an improvement on my patent of 1865;) and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which Figurel represents a top view of the cotton-tie Fig. 2, a side view of the same. Fig. 3 exhibits the shape and construction of the cleat or fastening.
The nature of my invention consists in the shape and construction of the cleat with its curved end or point, to press against the lower side of the band and hold or look it firmly.
- To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it, as follows:
A represents the band that surrounds the bale of cotton, having several oblong apertures, B B, near the one end of the band, into which the cleat or fastening D is inserted and locks. The fastening D is riveted near to the one end of band A, and is of an oblong shape, with its one 'end, E, that is curved or bent downward, so as to press nearly against the lower side of the band, (that is of hoop-ir0n,) to lock it firmly, after the aperture B of the band has been passed overthe cleat D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cotton-bale cleat D, herein described, provided with the steps a b and the curved hook E, in combination with the band A and slot B, when constructed and arranged as shown, for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM J. OAR-ROLL.
