Referring particularly to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings, the bookbinder is provided with a cover element l composed of a back 2 and hinged leaves 3 preferably made of board or other suitable stiff material and preferably covered at the inner and outer faces with cloth, leatherette or other suitablematerial. The back is preferably composed of a stiff strip 4 of board or other suitable material and is faced with a piece 5 of fabric or other suitable material interposed between the strip 4 and a holder 13 and extended beyond the same and secured by adhesive or other suitable material to the inner faces of the hinged leaves. The outer covering? of the hinged leaves 3 is preferably extended across the strip 4 in the formation of the back of the cover element and is secured by adhesive material or other suitable means tothe strip 4. The cover element I may however be made in any other desired manner and may be variously ornamented as will be readily understood.

The holder 6 is preferably of double channel formation to provide a front channel 8 and a rear channel 9. The holder is designed to be stamped or otherwise formed from a single substantially oblong piece of sheet metal which is bent at right angles at spaced points to provide parallel front flanges l0 and a connecting web H. The metal of the flanges Ill is then folded back upon the flanges at each side of the holder and extended rearwardly beyond the web H to provide spaced parallel rearwardly extending flanges l2 which form the side walls of the rear channel 9. The rear flanges l2, are fitted against the back of the cover element and may be secured to the stiff vstrip by tubular rivets !3, as

any other suitable fastening. means may of course be employed. The rivets l3 pierce the strip 4 and terminate short of the outer face of the cover element. 'The fabric member 5 assists in securing the holder to the cover element as the fabric element extends across the strip 4 between the same and the holder and is secured to the hinged leaves of the cover element.

The front channel of the holder is adapted to receiveone or more books which are retained in the front channel by spring clips Hi located at the upper and lower ends of the holder and constructed of spring steel wire or other suitable material and composed of front and rear legs 15 and I6 and a curved connecting portion 11. The resilient book engaging clips l i which may be of any desired number and which are laterally adjustable on the end portions of the holder have their frontlegs located in the front channel 8 and their rear legs arranged in the rear channel 9. The front leg l5 of each book engaging clip is straight and is designed to be of greater length than the rear leg [5 for engaging books of different sizes and regardless of the thickness of a book it is adapted to lie flat against the bindingof the book in parallelism with the web ll of the holder and it is provided at its free end with a relatively large circular loop l8 forming an eye adapted to be readily grasped between the fingers to facilitate the removal of the spring clips from the holder. Also the eye formed by the loop i3 is adapted to be readily engaged by a key L3 or other instrument to facilitate removal of the spring clips and the terminal loop I8 enables the spring clips to be readily engaged with a book without liability of injuring the leaves or binding thereof. The rear leg is provided with an angular bend 20 which fits against the rear face of the web H of the holder when the clip is in position on the holder and it' forms a fulcrum and it coacts with the curved connecting portion of the clip to enable the front leg to be arranged in parallelism with the web portion of the holder when the said front leg is in engagement with the binding of a book regardless of the thickness of the book. The major portion of the rear leg I8 is straight and is arranged at an acute angle to the straight front leg i5, and its free terminal bears against and fulcrums onthe rear face of the holder. The curved connecting portion ll of v the clip is resilient and forms with the front and rear legs a tapering spring loop which is adapted to adjust itself automatically to the thickness of a book with the straight front leg lying flat against the book. The resilient connecting portion of the loop and the fulcruming of the free end of the rear leg against the holder permit the front leg to maintain itself in parallelism with the holder and lie flat against a book at different distances from the holder so that it will always lie flat against a book regardless of the thickness of the same. The rear leg is provided at its free end with a substantially circular loop 2| of a size to lierwithin the rear channel of theholder. The spring clips .may be arranged at either or both ends of the holder for temporary or permanent binding and, when arranged at one end only at either the top or bottom of the holder, books, catalogues, pamphlets, leaflets and the like of different sizes may be readily placed in and removed from the binder by simply engaging them with and disengaging them from the front legs of the clips without removing the clips from the holder.

The spring clips are moved lengthwise of the holder to engage them with and disengage them from the holder and they are retained in'position on the holder by closure members 22 constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material and consisting of a substantially L-shaped plate provided with side flanges 23 and having spaced longitudinally extending resilient ears 24 formed integral with and extending from the flanges 23 and arranged within the rear channel 9 and fittedflat against the inner faces of the side walls or flanges i 2 of thelrear channel. The L-shaped plate of the closure member is composed of wings 25 and 26; the wing 25 fits between'the rearwardly extending flanges l2 of the holder and the other wing 26 extends across the end of the holder and with the side flanges 23 confines the spring clips 14 on the holder. The side flanges of the closure member extend from the wing 25 and abut against the front flanges i of the holder.

The resilient arms 24 of the closure member are provided at their inner ends with laterally extending lugs 2'! which project into slots 28 in the side walls or flanges l2 of the rear channel 9 of the holder, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The lugs 21 are shouldered at one end at 29 and are beveled at 30 to facilitate the ready insertion of the arms 24 into the rear channel and to provide a locking engagement between the lugs 21 and the outer end walls of the slots;28 when the closure members are in their locked position. 1

The holder 50 is relatively wide and is particularly adapted for holding a large number of books of the smaller type such as pamphlets. ,Thepamphlets or booklets are secured on the holder by spring clips l4 which are retained inpositioned on the holder by closure members :43 constructed substantially the same asthe closure members heretofore described with the exception that the resilient arms 44 are providedwith lugs 45 "beveled at each end to enable them to be readily disengaged from the slots 46- without the use of a key or other instrument. The beveled lugs 45 will enable the closure members 43 to be readily applied to and removed from the holder 40.

"What is claimedis:

1. Abinder for books, magazines, pamphlets and. the-like,- comprising a holder having side walls anda connecting web, the side walls projecting forwardly and rearwardly beyond the connecting web and forming front and rear longitudinal channels, the front channel being arranged to receive the books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and clips mounted on the holder at the upper and lower ends thereof 7 and having front and rear legs, thefront legs being engageable with the books,'magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like and the rear legs being located within the rear channel.-

2, A bookbinder comprising a holder of a length to extend from the top to the bottom of books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and consisting of a single piece of sheet metal bent at spaced points along longitudinal lines to provide front side flanges and a connecting web portion and thereby form a front channel to receive books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, the metal at the said front flanges being bent rearwardly against the front flanges and extended rearwardly beyondsaid web to provide rear side flanges and form a rear channel, and means located atthe ends of the, holder and extending into the front and rear channels and detachably retaining ,thebooks, magazines, cata- 'logues, pamphlets and they like in the front cure the same to the holder, and an end closure ;for the channel extending across the same for retainingthe clip in its engaging position and having means detachably engaging the side walls of v 4. A binder for books, magazines, pamphlets, catalogues and the like, comprising a holder having a channel, a clip mounted on the holder at the channel and engageable with the books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like to secure the same to the holder, and an end closure mounted on the holder at an end thereof for retaining the clip thereon, said end closure being provided with means for detachably engaging the holder.

5. A binder for books, magazines, pamphlets,

catalogues and the like, comprising a holder having a channel, a' clip mounted on the holder at the channel and engageable with the books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like to secure the same to the holder, and an end closure '76 mounted on the holder at an end thereof for retaining the clip thereon, said holder being provided with arms extending into the said channel and having means for detachably engaging the walls thereof.

6. A bookbinder comprising a holder having a channel and forming a support for books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and provided in the opposite walls of the channel with slots, a book engaging clip mounted on the holder at an end thereof, and a closure member for retaining the clip in position on the holder, said. closure member being provided with arms extending into the channel and having laterally projecting lugs engageable with the slots of said walls.

'7. A bookbinder comprising a holderhaving a channel and forming a support for books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and provided in the oposite walls of the channel with slots, a book engaging clip mounted on the holder at an end thereof, and a closure member for retaining the clip in position on the holder, said closure member being provided with arms extending into the channel and having laterally projecting lugs engageable with the slots of said walls and having shoulders for holding the end closure against outward movement.

8. A bookbinder comprising a holder having a channel and forming a support for books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and provided inthe opposite walls of the channelwith slots, a book engaging clip mounted on the holder at an end thereof, and a closure member for retaining the clip in position onthe holder, said closure member being provided with arms extending into the channel andhaving laterally projecting lugs engageable with the slots and provided with beveled ends to facilitate the insertion of the closure member in the holder.

9. A bookbinder comprising a holder having a channel and forming a support for books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and provided in the opposite walls of the channel with slots, a book engaging clip mounted on the holder at an end thereof, and a closure member for retaining the clip in position on the holder, said closure member being provided with arms extending into the channel and having laterally projecting lugs provided atone end with a shoulder for holding the closure element against outward movement and beveled at the other end to facilitate the insertion of the closure member in the holder.

'10. A bookbinder comprising a holder having a channel and forming a support for books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like,'and

provided in the opposite walls of the channel with slots, a book engaging clip mounted on the holder at an end thereof, and a closure member for retaining the clip in position on'the holder, saidolosure member being provided with arms extending into the channel and having laterally projecting lugs engageable with the slots and provided at each end with a shoulder for engaging an end wall of the slots. v

11. A bookbinder comprising a holder having a channel and forming a support for books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like, and provided in the oppositewalls of the channel with slots, a book engaging clip mounted on the holder at an end thereof, and a closure member for retaining the clip in position on the holder, said closure member being provided with arms extending into the channel and having laterally projecting lugs engageable with the slots and beveled at each end to facilitate the introduction of the closure member in the holder and enable the same to be readily removed therefrom without a key.

12. A bookbinder comprising a holder and spring clips for securing books, magazines, catalogues, pamphlets and the like to the holder, said clips each being composed of front and rear legs and a connecting portion, the front leg being of greater length than the rear leg and having a relatively large terminal loop and the rear leg being provided with an angular bend engaging the holder at a point intermediate the ends of the front leg and arranged at an angle to the engaged portion of the holder and providing an intervening space to permit pivotal movement of the rear leg and an adjustment of the front leg without disturbing the position of the front leg in parallelism with the holder, whereby the front leg is adapted to lie flat against booksjof different thicknesses.
