UNEEED STATES PATENT orties 1 Claim.
My invention relates to burial vaults and one object is to provide a durable structure of this character having inner and outer chambers with an intervening water-proof core to exclude lair,
water, or moisture from the inner chamber in which the casket is placed.
A further object is to provide novelv means for hermetically sealing the joints between the iid and the inner and outer chambers to prevent the entrance of water or the escape of the products of decomposition. 4
Another object is to provide a burial vault which is free from projections likely to become damaged while being molded o r transported.
Other objects will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which: i

In carrying out the invention I provide a body portion comprising inner'and outer chambers 2 and I 0, respectively. I'he inner chamber 2 is preferably made of cement or concrete and comprises 'a bottom wall 4, end walls 6 and side v v Walls 8.
, The outer chamber I 0 is preferably made of the same material as the inner chamber 2 and comprises a bottom wall I2, endwalls I4 and side walls I6.
Thev outer chamber I0 `ls of such size as to leave an intervening space between it and the walls of the inner chamber 2 for the reception of a core I8 consisting of asphalt or other waterproof material.
In practice'the inner chamber 2 is preferably cast `in one piece and coated with-the waterproof material I8 over winch the outer chamber is then cast preferably in one piece. When the body of the vault is thus completed the end and 5 side walls 6 and 8, respectively, of the inner chamber 6 project above the corresponding walls of the outer chamber I 0 to provide a continuous iiange 20. v v
22 designates the lid of the vault which is 50 preferably arch-shaped and made of the same material as that comprising the body of the vault.
As shown by Figs. 2 to 4, inclusive, the lid/22 comprises an inner section 24 and an outer section 28, with an intervening core 20 of water- 55 proof material.
The end and side walls 21 and 22, respective- 1y, of the outersection 26' extend below the corresponding walls of the inner section 24 to provide a continuousv angeadapted to telescope over the flange 20 of the inner chamber 2 when the lid 22 is lowered into position over the body of the vault.
On completion of the body of the vault the water-proof core I8 is spread over the upper .margin of the outer chamber I0 and the outer surface of the flange 2D, then beveled off as indicated at 30, Fig. 4, so that when the lid 22 is lowered upon thebody the water-proof material I8 will be compressed as indicated at 3i, Figs. 2 and 3, and thus hermetically seal the joint between the body I0 and the outer section 26 of the lid.
As a further precautionary measure the lower portion of the water-proof core28 is spread over the lower margin of the inner section 24 of the lid and the inner surface of the walls 21 and 29, then beveled as indicated at 32` to provide sufcient `body to hermetically seal thefjoint between the lower margin of the section 24 and the upper margin of the flange 20, as indicated at 34, Figs. 2 and 3.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the complete structure provides in eiTct a triple wall, triple seal burial vault consisting of concrete or other durable material and having a core of water-proof material completely surrounding and enclosing the bottom, side and end walls of the inner or casket chamber 2, and a water-proof core surrounding the inner section of the lid, thereby providing an air-tight, water and verminyproof tomb which may be regarded as everlasting, and while I have shown a pre- 'ferred form of my burial vault I reserve all rights to such forms and modifications thereof as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'angi desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' -A burial vault comprising a body portion and a lid therefor, said body portion comprising inner and outer chambers respectively with an intervening core of waterproof material, the walls of said inner chamber projecting above the walls.
of the outerchamber to provide an upwardly extending iiange, said waterproof material extending upwardly -to a level with the top of the flange and overlapping the upper edges of the end and side walls respectively of the outer chamber, the lid for the body portion comprising inner and outer sections with an intervening waterproof core, saidouter section extending below the inner section and adapted to telescope over the upwardly projecting ange of the body, and said waterproof core extending downward to the lower margin of the outer `section and covering the lower margin of the inner section;
