` This invention relates to syringes and like hand appliances, especially suitable for use for surgical or medical purposes.
It is most desirable in syringes particularly for those intended for medical or surgical use, such as vaginal syringes, that the nozzle end should be of as simple a shape as possible and withouttapsor external valves, that any controls should: be vremote of away from such end, that the instrument should be operable with one hand, and that the rate of discharge should be regulatable` by a valve or the like and not be dependent on hand pressure. Further desiderata are that the instrument should be compact and portable and that in use it should not require anyy attachments to other parts, e. g. pumps.
The main object of the present invention is Yto provide a syringe fullling all thesev desiderata, and whichfurther is of such construction'that it can be manufactured of substanceswhich permit .of the exterior being easily cleaned and sterilized.
According to the present invention a syringe or the like appliance is provided with an inner cyl# inder, surrounded by an outer rubbersleeve,v normally in close proximity therewith, and'atta'ched to the cylinder ina iiuid tight manner, so 'that when fluid is forced through a non-return valve in the cylinder a storage space, formed bythe circumferential extension of therubber sleeve, is lled by liquid. Upon the actuation of a valve providing a variable and controllable aperture the liquid so stored is discharged under. the pressure exerted by the rubber sleeve through a dis,- charge tube and nozzle, but no hand pressure is required on the bulb. The same tube is used for charging the cylinder and for the discharge of the liquid.'

A case vcan be conveniently constructed for use with the syringe as is hereinafter illustrated, the cap being internally screwed, such screw co-operating rstly with screw threads -on the body of the syringe and subsequently with like threads on the body of the casing. The'barrel or cylinder 3 is Ysurrounded by an elastic Wall 8 which by` circumferential expansion forms a contractile storage 'chamber 9 between the elastic wall and the cylinder wall. The wall 8 is secured in a fluid tight manner at its ends between flanges II Yon the cylinder wall, and flanges I2a on the end covers I2 of the cylinder.
The piston on its discharge stroke forces the fluid from the cylinder through a non-return valve controlled inlet I0 into the storageY chamber. 'I'he non-return valve is shown as a rubber band Illa. Y I
In the cylinder end wall I3 there is a valve I 4a is the valve port and I5 the storage chamber discharge port.
The stem I6 of the valve I4 projects through the end cap I2 of the cylinder and has an index disc I'I and a pin I8 Working in a groove I9 for setting the valve I4. For discharge the valve may be positioned so that its port I4a wholly or partly registers with the storage chamber port I5 whereby the rate of discharge may be regulated.
Instead of a rotary valve a slide or push valve may be used. As shown in Fig. 9, II!! is a'slide or push valve which for discharge is positioned by a sliding movement againsta spring III so that the valve port II2 Wholly or partly registers with the storage chamber port I5.
The valve I4 hasf'a tubular extension I4b through which the fluid on discharge passes to the spigot and socket tubes 4 `and '5 and out throughthe nozzle 6. 'Ihis tubular extension I4b also serves as a centre guide for the piston I.
The appliance is adapted to fit into a small cylindrical container illustrated in Fig. 2 which may be made of a phenolic condensation product or like substance, so that it is protected from bacterial contamination, and the container conceals the nature of the contents. That shown is a two-part container 20, 2I, the part 2| 'having a chamber 22 serving as a holder for a supply of packets or capsules of any desired substance e. g., an antiseptic. has-one component 23 of a screw union, the
. other component 24 of whichvis on one end-cap of the cylinder so that theV appliance is held from movement within the container. The
4component 23 may be common to both the component 24 and a component 25 on the part 2I of the container. f
n In the modification shown by Fig. 3 the piston is solid andthe tubular extension I4b serves as a suction tube,jthe fluid passing into the cylinder through a suction valve I4c consisting of a rubber band.
The cylinder or the piston and telescopic arrangement may be reciprocated or pulsated for pumping the fluid. 1 Whenthe cylinder is pulsated or reciprocated the nozzle end of the telescopic construction may be held against the bottom of a bowl of liquid.

Apparatus according to the present invention is Well suited for manufacturing by moulding processes.

A syringe of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, a piston fitted therein, a pump suction valve for passing the fluid to theA cylinder, a filling and discharge tube attached to said piston, an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximity with said cylinder or barrel and'attached'thereto in aA fluid tight mannersdas to form a contractible storage space, a one-way valve controlled inlet from said cylinder to said storage space through which said storage space is lled, and a valve controlled discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluidV so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by theY elastic sleeve.

A syringe of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, a piston tted therein, said piston' and cylinder being relatively displaceable for pumping fluid, a ,resilient member Yfor causing movement in one direction, a, valve through which the fluid is pumped into the cylinder,l an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximity with said cylinder or barrel and attached thereto in a fluid tight manner so 4as to form a contractiblel storage space, a one-way valve controlled inlet from said cylinder to said storage space through which said storage space is filled, and a valve controlled discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluid so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastic sleeve.
5. A syringe of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, `a piston fitted therein, a valve through which the fluid is forced into the cylinder, said piston being prolonged in the form of a tube comprising socket and spigot parts passing through andprojecting beyond an end wall of the cylinder, an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximitywith said cylinder or barrel and attached thereto in a fluid tight manner so as to form a .contractible storage space, a one-Way valve controlled inlet from said cylinder to said storage space vthrough which said storage space is filled, and a valve controlled discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluid so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastic sleeve.

A syringe of the kind referred to comprising a filling and discharge tube consisting of socket and spigot parts, an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximity therewith and attached thereto in a fluid tight manner so as to form a contractible storage space, a one-Way valve controlled inlet to said storage space through which said storage space is lled, a valve controlled discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluid so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastic sleeve, and means for detachably securing said socket and spigot parts together to provide an elongated filling and discharging tubesaid parts being constructed so that when detached they can be locatedi one within theL other and the two parts at least in part housed in said cylinder.

A syringe of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, a piston fitted therein, a valve for forcing the fluid into the cylinder, an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximity with said cylinder or barrel and attached thereto ina fluid tight manner so as to form a contractible storage space, a one-way valve controlled inlet from said cylinder to said storage space through which said storage space is filled, a discharge outlet from said storage space through 'which the lluid so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastic sleeve, and a valve for said discharge outlet,
said valve having a tubular extension through. which the lluid is discharged and serving as a.
centre guide for the piston.

A syringe of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, a piston tted therein, said piston and said cylinder being relatively displaceable so as to form a pump, an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximity with said cylinder or barrel and attached thereto in a fluid tight manner so as to form a contractible storage space, a one-way valve controlled inlet from said cylinder to said storage space through which said storage space is filled, a discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluid so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastic sleeve, a valve for said discharge outlet, said valve having a tubular extenison through which the fluid is discharged, an aperture in the wall of said tubular extension, and a pump suction valve controlling said aperture and opening on the suction stroke of the pump to allow forthe passageL ofl fluid. through4 said extension into thefcylinder..

A syringe of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, an outer elastic sleeve normally in close proximity therewith and attached thereto in a fluid tight manner so as'to form a contractible storage space, a one-way valve controlled inlet to said storage space through which said storage space is filled, a discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluid so stored is discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastic sleeve, a manually operated regulatable valve for said discharge outlet, and means for setting said regulatable valve.

A syringe or the like of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid hollow cylinder or barrel, an outer elastic sleeve normally surrounding said cylinder and lying in close proximity therewith, a filling tube connected to said cylinder, said tube also acting as a discharge tube, said sleeve being attached to the cylinder in a fluid-tight manner and being adapted to be exfrom said storage space through which the iiuid so stored can be rdischarged under the pressure exerted by theelastically energized sleeve, and a manually operable valve for controlling the discharge through said outlet, said one-way valve being arranged to trap a quantity of-fluid in said storage space when said discharge valve is closed. f

A syringe according to claim 13, having external screw threads on the body. at or near the nozzle end, and provided with a-case the body of which has at its upper end screw threads forining a continuation of those above mentioned, and a cap having internal screwthreads of similar pitch adapted to co-operate rstly with the screw threads on the syringe and then with the screw threads on the case body to secure the cap to the case. A syringe or the like of the kind referred to comprising an inner rigid cylinder or barrel, an outer elastic sleeve normally surrounding said cylinder and lying in close proximity therewith, said sleeve being attached to the cylinder in a fluid-tight manner and being adapted to be expanded and elastically energized byfluid pressure so as to form a variable storage spacebetween the sleeve and the outer wall of thev cylinder, a iilling tube which also Aacts as a discharge tube leading to said cylinder, a uid inlet to said storage space from said cylinder and a oneway valve at such inlet for controlling the admission through such inlet of fluid by which said sleeve is elasticallyA expanded and the storage space filled, a discharge outlet from said storage space through which the fluid so stored can be discharged under the pressure exerted by the elastically energized sleeve `from the same end of the said tube as that used for Yiilling, and a valve arranged to be hand-operated -by the user for controlling the discharge through said outlet, said one-way valve being arranged to permit a quantity of fluid to be trapped insaidstorage space when said discharge valve isclosed.
