Description

Sept. 20, 1938. .1. E. NEWMAN SPIGOT KNOB Filed Nov. 20,- 1937 INVENTOR. du -g 8 71% w ATTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 20, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bar spigot knobs or the like, and it is among the objects thereof to provide a knob embodying a simple and inexpensive means of applying a name plate thereto.
In the vending of draft beer, it is necessary or desirable to mark the beer spigot knobs with the name of the product dispensed through the particular spigot, and the name must be applied to be visible to the consumer.
In accordance with the present invention, a construction of spigot knob is provided in which the main body of the knob may be produced in large quantities and inexpensively, of cast metal or the like, and the name plate in the form of an annulus may be applied to such knobs by merely snapping them in a groove provided in the knob, the annular name plate also functioning to hold the knob parts in their assembled position.
The invention will become more apparent in consideration of the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of a spigot knob embodying the principles of this invention;
Fig. 2 a vertical cross-sectional View thereof;
Fig. 3 a front elevational View with name plate removed; and
Fig. 4 a top plan view of the annular name plate.
As shown in the several figures of the drawing, the structure therein illustrated comprises a substantially spherically shaped knob constructed of parts I and 2, part I being provided with a threaded bushing 3 for screwing on the end of a spigot arm 4, as shown in Fig. 1. The parts I and 2 may be die cast metal, aluminum or other light weight material and the bottom portion I is provided with a flange portion 5 for receiving a cylindrical portion 6 of the upper member 2. The outer periphery of the members I and 2 at their point of meeting are recessed as shown at I, Fig. 3, to receive a band 8 of brass or other springy material having lugs 9 formed thereon for interacting with slots I provided in the knob element. The band 8 is provided with in-turned ends II which also fit into slots I0 of the knob element. When the members are assembled in Fig. 3, the band 8 is snapped in position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the lugs 9 and II functioning to prevent displacement of the members 10 I and 2.
The bands 8 are provided with the indicia of the brand of beer dispensed through the spigot on which the knob is mounted, and by employing a band, such as the band 8, the name may be 5 engraved, enameled or otherwise provided on the band a number of times so as to be plainly visible from any angle at which the knob is viewed.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the manner of assembling the knob parts and ring without departing from the principles herein set forth so long as provision is made for snapping the name band on the member as herein described.
I claim:
A spigot knob comprising a pair of semi-spherical portions, one of which is provided with a recess and the other with a projecting element adapted to interact with the recess to form a substantially spherical knob, said knob, when assembled, having a peripheral recess at the point of juncture of the assembled parts and being further provided with notches, a name plate of annular shape sprung on said spherical knob in the recess thereof and having its outer surface continuous with the contour of the knob, said name plate having projections for interacting with the notches of said knob element.
