NECKTIE KNOT FORM Filed Feb. 2, 1938 FEux ALVA INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Pntented May 31, 1938 PATENT; OFFICE NECKTIE KNOT FORM Felix Alva, New York, N. Y.
Application February 2, 1938, Serial No. 188,383
5 Claim.
This invention relates to a device adapted to be incorporated within a knot in a necktie and more especially to a device to give form' and shape to a four -in-hand knot formed in a so-called string necktie.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a new and improved article of manufacture adapted to be removably inserted in a four-in-hand knot formed in a so-called string necktie whereby said knot presents a more pleasant and aesthetically satisfying appearance than would otherwise be the case.
Other objects, advantages and features of the device according to the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art during the course of the following description wherein a specific embodiment of the present invention, herein illustrated, will be described, it being clearly understood however that the illustrated preferred embodiment is given solely by way of example and is non-limitative.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is substantially a perspective view of a string tie tied in a four-in-hand knot, showing the device according to the present invention positioned as in use;
Fig. 2 is substantially a perspective view of a tie during the process of tying a four-in-hand knot therein, showing the article of manufacture according to the present invention in position for use;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the now preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 4 is substantially a vertical sectional view of Fig. 3 taken along the line 4-4;
Fig. 5 is substantially. a side elevational view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is substantially a top plan view of the now preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Regarded in certain of its broader aspects, the present invention comprises a block-like object essentially triangular in outline in vertical section and substantially rectangular in outline in horizontal section, having a vertically positioned slot formed therein extending through at least a major portion of said block, open at the sides thereof but not open at the top, whereby a pair of substantially parallel block-like members are provided, united together by a hemi-cylindrical cross member formed integral with said members and positioned with the curved portion of said hemi-cylindrical member pointing in a downward direction. A cutaway portion is provided upon one of said substantially parallel members extending from thellowermost portion thereof in a vertical direction to the top and passing over the upper part of said connecting cross member to terminate at the top portion of said other block member positioned in substantial parallelism'to said first mentioned block.
In order to facilitate a fuller and more complete understanding of the matter of the present invention the herein illustrated embodiment thereof will now be described. In this connection the article itself, best illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, 5 1
and 6, inclusive, will be first described and later the use of the article which is best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing forming part of the disclosure.
Referring then to Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6, it willbe .noted that the block generally designated at I0 is essentially triangular in vertical sectional view as shown in outline in Fig. 3, the corners H, i2 and I3 being rounded substantially as shown. A slot i4 is formed in said block extending substantially throughout the length thereof, whereby a front portion i5 is held substantial 1y parallel to the rear portion l6 by means including a hemi-cylindrical cross-piece I'I formed integral with said members l5 and It. It is to be noted that the connecting member I l is positioned with the curved part pointing downwardly, substantially as shown.
A channel-like cutaway portion l8 beginning near the bottom end of the block generally designated at l3 and vertically extending toward the top of said block, is formed in the front portion l5. It is to be particularly noted that the cutaway portion l8 increases in width and depth as the distance increases from the point of origin, namely, the bottom end l3 of the front portion of said block. The channel-like cutaway portion is continued over the top of the structure comprising the members or elements l5, l1 and i6, it being observed that the channel l9 formed in the cross member I! is relatively shallow as compared to the depth of the channel formed in the front portion l5 of the block. The channel l9 extends around to the rear face of the back portion l6, terminating in the upper portion thereof, substantially as shown in Figs. 4 and 6 and generally designated by the numeral 20.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, it is to be noted that the slot l4 formed in the block generally designated atv l0,-is of width sufiicient to readily accommodate superposed plies of a string tie whereby portions 2| and 22 of said tie can be crossed and positioned within said slot, substantially as shown in Fig. 2. It is to be understood, of course, that although the slot is made sufficiently wide to accommodate a double layer of string tie material as shown, the sides defining said slot are positioned sufficiently close to each other whereby the block generally designated at ill can engage therewith and be frictionally held on said crossed portions of said tie. Having positioned the block on the crossed parts of the tie, as aforesaid, a four-in-hand knot is formed therein in substantially the usual manner by passing the end portion of the tie 23 around the other end portion 24, as generally designated at 25,-
then bringing the end 13 around the portion 26 5 of said tie, over the block l and through the loop formed in the portion 21 of said tie. As
tension is placed on the end portion 23 the portions of the tie comprising the knot will be tightened and will assume the relationship illustrated 10 in Fig. 1, whereby it is to be observed that the front portion 23 of the tied tie will have a small depression 29 formed therein, substantially as shown, caused by the cutaway channel l8 formed in said block l0.
It will be noted that a tie tied in a four-inhand ,knot with the article according to the present invention position in said knot is provided with a substantially firm support and form, tending to give it a pleasing appearance and 2e resisting changes in relative position of the portions of the tie comprising the knot during use.
It is also to be observed that the small depression fbformed in the front portion of the tie after tying as above described, at least tends to impart 25 an air of smartness to the tied tie which is difficult to obtain when no form is used.
It is to be understood that this improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing 30 nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be'made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
