Feb. s, '1938.k H4 HUBER 2,107,736
BLADE HOLDER Filed March 2e, 1956 INVENTOR BY y .4
ATTORN EYS Patented Feb. 8, 1938 PATENT OFFICE BLADE HOLDER Henry Huber, Pontiac, Mich.
Application March 26, 1936, Serial No. 70,913
1 Claim.
yThe present invention pertains to al blade holder of the type particularly adapted for holding safety razor blades.
The primary object of the present invention is 5 to provide a holder for razor blades which is adapted for use in holding razor blades of popular makes, either of the type having double cutting edges or single cutting edges, and which is Yso constructed that a blade may be supported in an endWise projecting position adapting it for use as a cutting instrument such as a knife, in a position wherein the entire outing edge along one Yside thereof is exposed so that the device may function as a scraping implement, and in a position wherein the blade is entirely concealed or housed so that it may be carried in a persons i pocket, without doing any damage.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a blade holder embodying ya pair of yieldably spaced apart walls and means for supporting a razor blade between such walls so that by clamping the walls together they frictionally engage the blade to hold the same against movement with respect to the body, the means for Vsupporting the blade being guided in movement with respect to the body so that the blade may be moved, when the clamping means is released,
to positions adapting the device for service as different kinds of tools.
With the above and other ends in View the invention is more fully disclosed with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Fig.v 2 is a vertical section;
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are sections taken respectively on the lines 3-3, 4-4 and 5 5 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation illustrating an alternative positionof the blade.
Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.
vThe numerals I and 2 designate side walls integrally united by a portion 3. The portion 3 supports the side walls I and 2 slightly spaced apart and embodies sumcient flexibility to permit 45 a small amount of springing of the side walls with respect to each other. The side Walls are formed with parallel slots having straight portions 4 extending substantially in the direction of the length of the walls I and 2 and with portions 5 extending obliquely to the portions 4. A plate E is disposed against the outside face of the Wall I and rhas a pair of spaced apart studs 'I and 8 projecting through the slots in the walls I and 2. A razor blade 9, illustrative of any popular make of razor blade, has apertures I0. The blade is supported between the walls I and 2 by the studs 1 and 8. The stud I is screwthreaded as illustrated to receive a thumb nut I I.
As illustrated in Fig. 1 the studs I and 8 are disposed in the straight portion 4 of the slots and thus support the blade 9 in a position projecting endwse from the walls I and 2. By tightening the thumb nut II the walls I and 2 are drawn into frictional engagement with the sides ofthe plate to hold the same in the position shown. The blade is thus supported ina position adapting the device for uses corresponding to those of a knife.
By loosening the thumb nut I I the plate 6 and blade may be moved with respect to the side walls I and 2 and by moving the plate and blade so that the studs 1 and 8 rest in the oblique portions 5 of the slots the entire side edge of the blade is exposed as illustrated in Fig. 6. When the blade has been moved to the position illustrated in Fig. 6 the thumb nut II is again tightened and the blade is frictionally held in this position adapting the device for use as a scraping implement;
By positioning the studs 'I and 8 in the other 2 that the device may be carried in a persons b pocket.
From the foregoing it becomes apparent that the blade 9 may be moved to different positions of adjustment wherein it functions as different kinds of tools without the necessity of completely removing the blade. Furthermore such adjustments can be made without the necessity of the person making the same actually touching the blade inasmuch as the thumb nut II and plate 6 may be grasped to apply the pressure necessary to move the blade.
Although a specic embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described it will be understood that various changes may be made Within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention and such changes are contemplated.
A device of the character described comprising a body having spaced apart side walls, a blade, means for guiding movement of said blade with respect to said body, and means for clamping said side walls against said blade to hold it in positions of adjustment, said guiding means comprising parallel slots in opposed side Walls of said body and means carried by the blade and movable in said slots, said slots having portions disposed whereby they support the blade projecting end- Wise from said body, portions disposed whereby they supportl the blade entirely concealed Within the body, and portions disposed whereby they support the blade with one side edge angularly exposed, the several portions of said slots being connected whereby the guiding means carried by the blade may be continuously moved from one position to another.
