SHABPENING TOOL Application filed April 16,
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpening tools, the object be ing to provide a device of the above character which shall perform its work in an effective and expeditious manner.
The sharpening tool or device of our invention is particularly designed for use in con nection with blades, such as those in knives, paper cutters, mowers, reapers, and other cutting machinery.
Features of the invention may be found in the utilization of a length or bar of hardened steel or other suitable material formed with one or more sharpening edges or corners, said bar being suitably mounted in combination with a guide piece, for the various purposes to which it may be applied.
For instance, for some purposes the sharpening bar may be applied to an anchored base to direct it upwardly from a table or the like, or horizon-tally from a wall or the like.
The sharpening bar, for other purposes, may be provided with a handle, or it may be 'set into a groove formed in a block or base with the cutting edge of the bar rising above the plane of said block, and it may be held in proper position by straps or other securing devices, and further, a wire or the like may be placed on the said block parallel with the sharpening bar to provide a gage on which a blade may bear or rest to give proper angularity thereto when sharpening the same.
In order that the invention may beclearly understood and readily carried into efiect, the same will now be described more fully in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved blade sharpener secured to a table or other support; I
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bladesharpening device shown applied to an ordinary handle for general use,
Fig. 4 is a composite perspective fragmentary view of the top portions of a sharpening bar and a gage device inseparated relation;
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail crosssections show 1928. Serial No. 270,392.
ing other shapes of sharpening bars which may be employed;
Fi g. 7 is a perspective view of a preferred form of the blade-sharpening device; and
Fig.8 is an end view of the device shown in Fig. 7, partially broken away.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 10 designates sharpening bar or length of preferably hardened steel or the like, and preferably triangular in cross-section. This bar may be supported in a boss 11 integrally formed with a base plate 12 having openings 13 to receive screws 14, whereby the bar 10 may be secured in a vertical position on a table or other support 15; or said bar may be secured in a horizontal position on a wall or other vertical support, as will be obvious.
In carrying out our invention we may employ in combination with the sharpening bar 10, a guide or gage device 16, shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, as formed of sheet metal and comprising a rear wall or portion 17, converging and yielding side walls or portions 18, and unitary therewith outwardly directed gage wings 19, against which the blade to be sharpened may rest or bear when moving it over the sharpening edge of the bar 10 to obtain the proper angularity of the said blade in the sharpening operation.
From the showing in the several views of the drawings, it will be obvious that the gage device 16 of the invention may be drawn off the sharpening bar when desired and returned thereto in a changed position to present a new or another cutting edge than the last used.
The convergent walls 18 of the gage device are so bent or formed relative to the rear wall thereof that they will exert a light spring or yielding bearing against the corresponding faces of the bar 10 to prevent the said gage device from sliding thereon, but may easily be removed by grasping the same and urging it outwardly.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings is shown the improved sharpcning tool provided with a handle 21 this form providing convenient means for sharpening scythes, sickles, shears, paper-cutting blades, mower blades, and for many other sharpening uses.
In Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, We illustrate another embodiment of the lnventlon,
'in which a block or base piece 22 is formed with a longitudinal groove 23, ofproper angular contour in cross-section to receive a sharpening bar 10 which is removably held in placeby angularly. bent bridging straps 24 or the'like, secured to the block 22 by screws or other devices 25, while the bar 10 is preferably arranged in the groove with one ofits sides in a vertical plane;
The gage device 16, employed in the last above the base, angularly bent means for holding the cutting bar in its groove, and a gage device disposed in spaced and parallel relation with said bar.
In testimony whereof, wehave signed our names to this specification, this 2nd day of April, 1928. s
THADDEUS A. JACKSON.
WILLIAM J. SKELLY.
described form of the invention, may be constituted by a length of wire or other material 26, having its ends turned down an'd' back into the ends of theblock as shown at 27 cc maintain said Wire parallel with the sharpene ing bar 10, and on this wire, blades to be sharpened may rest to hold them at-the proper angle in the sharpening operation.
When sharpening a butcher knife or the like 011 the tool shown in Figs. 7 and. 8 of the drawings, the blade is, given the proper",
horizontal angleby resting iton the cutting edge and onthe gag-e device 1.6, as'indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 8,,alfter which it should be tilted with the cutting edge in contact with the said edge 20 and gage l6 and with slight pressure drawn tothe right. V
or across the, cutting edge, thus cutting a thin shaving .or shavings from the blade fafter which it is turned on the opposite sideand' i the sharpening operation. is repeated."
It will be apparent, by forcing the cutting j bar 10 endwise of its groove23, it maybe removed when one cuttmgedge 1s dull and replaced with a sharp edge presented uppermost for service, thuseXt-ending the-effective.
life of. the tool;
It is thought that the operation and utility of the device will be apparentwithout fur? ther description, and it is to be understood I that-we-do not limit ourselves to the particuf lar arrangements of the parts, as many ref. finements may be made 1n the commercial appllcatlon of the device purpose set forth.
hat we claim-and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. A" sharpening tool comprising having an angular in cross-section groove extending longitudinally'thereof, a cutting bar partially received in said groove with a sharpening edge thereof above the top of.
3 a vertical planevand one of'its cutti11g edge s provided for the a base
