Referring to the drawing more in detail it will be seen that the device-comprises apair of shank members 5-5 crossed as shown and pivoted together as at 6. At the crossed portions thereof the shank members 5-5 areV complementarily notched as at 1. Y f

The resistance wires II are electrically connected with the wires of an electric cord I3, the
wires of the cord I 3 extending through the handle A 9shanks 5 and are electrically connected with theresistance Vwires II within the jaws III Aas shown.

the curling and crimping device has many features ofthe conventional hair curling iron, the

.In the form ofthe invention shown in Figures 1 to 3, as best shown in Figure 3 the jaws I0 are identical in cross section, each being substantially cylindrical throughout its entire length.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 4-k one of the jaws indicated by the reference nu meral YIlia is substantially cylindrical throughout its entire length While the other of the jaws'indicated generally by the referencenumeral Ib is substantially cylindrical for one-half of its circumference;4 and at opposite sides of the jaw the cylindrical surface of the jaw merges into flat surfaces I5 which converge toward the clamping face of the jaw and at said clamping face merge with ai substantially flat clamping surface I5, the jaw VIflb being of the cross sectional shape' asbest shown in Figure 5.
It is thought to be apparent, that in actual practice the heating elements II are arranged in a house circuit through the medium of the electric cord I3 in a conventional manner for heating the'jaws of the device. 'I'he article to be crimped or curled, whether it be strands of hair, table cloth, bed cloth, a curtain or the like has a 1 portion thereof clamped between the jaws and is Y held iirmly between' the jawsby reason of the devised a simple and economical electric curling or crimping device which may be used with equal facility for curling or crimping either the hair or household article such as bedspreads, curtains or the like.
In connection with the above the device is used for curling the hair as followsz As will appear the device of the present in- Cil Vention when used for curling hair is used substantially in the same manner as the well known type of hair curling tongs are used. Strands of hair at the end thereof are clamped between the jaw members l and the hair is then. wound around the closed jaw members in, an obvious manner. Within a comparatively short time the device is released and then with subsequent strands of hair the operation. is completed, and by continuing such operations until the curling of all the hair has been, completed a wave is given to the hair that will have a reaso-nable amount of permanency. Where a tapered wave in the hair is desired the device; is held vertically, but for a marcel wave the device is applied horizontally, and for such a wave, in-
stead of curling but several strands of hair at each operation as many strands of hair as possible is clamped therein between. the jaws and then the device is given a half turn to the right and held in that position for a short period of time. and then released. This operation is continued until all the hair has been so waved.
For crimping or ruiiiing materials such as curtain ruiiles, bedspreads, the bottoms of dresses, etc. the following operation is performed. The material to be crimped or ruffled has a portion thereof placed between the jaws l0 and is gripped between the jaws, the jaws being brought together to securely clamp the. material therebetween. Then the left hand of the operator is placed on the material to hold the material more or less taut while with the right hand the crimping device is given a half turn to the right and held in that position for a short period of time after which the device is released and on. a next adjacent portion of the article the operation just described is repeated.
'I'hese operations are continued until the crimping or rufing of the article, or desired parts thereof has been completed. When completed a well tapered ruiile is presented, the tapering ruiiie being narrow at the top and wide at the bottom thus giving a natural appearanceto the crimped or ruiiled portion of the article. In this connection it will be understood that but the edge portions of bedspreads, curtain trimmings, or Valances are ruffled or crimped for adding to the attractive appearance thereof.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the manner of using the device will be had from the foregoing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:`
1. An electric curling and crimping device comprising a pair of crossed shank members pivoted together, elongated longitudinally tapered jaw members on one end of said shanks, said jaws being hollow, electric heating elements arranged in said jaws, said jaws having inter-fitting roughened areas on their meeting surfaces to effect a positive hold on the article clamped I therebetween.
2. An electric curling and crimping device comprising a pair of crossed shank members pivoted together, elongated longitudinally tapered jaw members on one end of said shanks, said jaws being hollow, electric heating elements arranged in said jaws, said jaws having inter-fitting roughened areas on their meeting surfaces to effect a positive hold on the article clamped therebetween., and handles on said Shanks at the ends thereof remote from said jaws..
3. An electric curling and crimping device comprising a pair of crossed shank members pivoted together, elongated longitudinally tapered jaw members on one end of said shanks, said jaws being hollow, electric heating elements arranged in said jaws, said jaws having inter-fitting roughened areas on their meeting surfaces to effect a positive hold on the article clamped therebetween, handles on said shanks at the ends thereof remote from said jaws, said jaws being substantially cylindrical in cross` section throughout their respective lengths.
4. An electric curling and crimping device comprising a pair of crossed shank members pivoted together, elongated longitudinally tapered jaw members on one end of said Shanks, said jaws being hollow, electric heating elements arranged in said jaws, said jaws having inter-fitting roughened areas on their meeting surfaces to effect a positive hold on the article clamped therebetween, handles on said Shanks at the ends thereof remote from said jaws, one of said jaws being substantially cylindrical throughout its entire length, and the other of said jaws being substantially segmentally shaped in cross section and having flat surfaces on substantially three sides thereof, one of said surfaces constituting a gripping surface and adapted to bear against the other of said jaws for effecting a gripping action between the jaws. j
