IVVE/VTOR WITNESSES H 'r I W (a( Joseph I. (anew; I 1.,

COMB.
Application filed November 10, 1920. Serial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH PING CA- NEAVRI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Arthur, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to combs, and has for its object to provide a comb especially adapted to be utilized to efi'ect the straightening of extremely kinky and unmanageable hair whereby the hair after undergoing treatment of the comb is straightened and is rendered of such quality that it may be dressed and fixed as desired.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is of extremely simple and durable construction, reliable in opertion and easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the comb;
Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in side elevation and partly in section of the comb handle and associated structure;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, a comb body or back is provided, as designated at 5, and is constituted of metal, preferably aluminum. A row of coarse teeth is formed along one of the longitudinal sides or edges of the comb, as shown at 6. The teeth 6 have a flat vertical face or wall 7 and an inclined face or wall 8, as shown in Fig. 3. A row of fine teeth 9 are provided along the other or opposite edge of the comb back and are oppositely inclined with respect to the teeth 6. The teeth 9 have a fiat vertical face or wall 10 and an inclined face or wall 11. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the fiat vertical faces or wall 7 of the teeth 6 are co-incident or co-planar with one face of the comb back and the fiat faces or walls of the teeth 9 are Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jane 21, 1921. No. 423,129.
coincident or co-planar with the opposite faces of the comb back. The body portion of the combor back proper is provided with a cavity 12 from the lower end of which leads an opening 13 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.
A handle designated generally as 14: is provided and at one'end of the handle a pair of spring clamps 15 is integrally formed and adapted to embrace the back 5 of the comb, one of the clamps serving to cover the cavity 12 as well as the opening 13. When the clamps 15 are engaged with the back as shown in Fig. 1 they are under tension and frlctionally engage the back to properly associate the handle therewith. A tubular shank 16 is formed at the opposite end of the handle and is preferably elongated, as shown in the drawings. The entire handle including the clamps, body portion and shank is integral and made of brass or aluminum. The body portion of the handle is formed with an inclined shoulder 17 as shown in Fig. 2.
A sleeve or grip 18 of insulating material and preferably di-electric as well as heat insulating is arranged on the tubular shank 16 of the handle.
The upper end of the sleeve or grip 18 is provided with an inclined wall 19 which seats against the inclined shoulder 17 in the handle. An apertured cap 20 is threaded on the lower end of the shank 16 to secure the sleeve in place.
Electric heating means for the comb teeth is provided in the cavity 12 and includes an electric heating element 21 arranged in the cavity and supplied with current by means of conductors 22 extending through the tubular shank 16 and opening 13 of the comb back to the electric heating element.
In operation, current being supplied to the electric heating element by means of the conductors 22, the metal which constitutes the comb body or back 5 and the teeth 6 and 9 is at once evenly and uniformly heated. The operator then grasps the sleeve 16 of the handle and runs the teeth of the comb through the hair to be treated. The action of the comb and of the teeth thereof may be manipulated as desired and eitherarunning, constant or ironing pressure or a twisting action may be applied while simultaneously treating the hair to the action of heat. The facility with which the handle and the electric heating element associated therewith may be assembled and disassembled makes it possible to use a number of different comb backs with the same handle and heating element without delay and when the device is used by hair dressers this feature makes the comb highly sanitary as it facilitates the use of new comb backs and teeth for each individual. In order to disassociate the handle and electric heating element from the comb it is only necessary to engage the lower end of the comb back against any suitable abutment and pull upon the handle when the clamps and the handle will slide along the conductors 22 until the clamps have disengaged from the comb back and when this occurs the electric heating element may be lifted out of the cavity 12. In assembling the comb the electric heating element is placed in the cavity and the clamps of the handle are spread apart over the comb back and then slid into position to retain the comb back and electric heating element in proper position.
I claim:
1. Acomb of the character described comprising a comb bodyor back having a row of inclined teeth along one edge and a row of oppositely inclined teeth along its other edge and provided with a central elongated cavity, a handle having a tubular shank and a pair of spring clamps adapted to embrace and engage the back and close the cavity thereof, a sleeve of insulated material arranged on the tubular shank, means for retaining the insulating sleeve on the handle, electric heating means arranged in the cavity of the back and conductors for supplying the electric heating element with current extending through the tubular shank.
2. A comb of the character described comprising a comb body or back having rows of oppositely inclined teeth along its edges and provided with a central cavity, a handle having a tubular shank and a pair of spring clamps adapted to embrace and engage the back and close the cavity thereof, a sleeve of insulating material arranged on the tubular shank, electric heating means arranged in the cavity of the back and conductors for supplying the electric heating means with current extending through the tubular shank.
3. A comb of the character described, comprising a comb back or body of aluminum, teeth integrally formed with said back or body, said back or body having provided therein a cavity, a handle having a pair of spring clamp members adapted to embrace and engage the back-and close the cavity and conductors for supplying the electric heating element with current extending through the opening of the shank.
5. A comb of the character described comprising a comb back of aluminum having a cavity therein, an electric heating element arranged in said cavity, a handle having spring clamps adapted to embrace the body to engage the handle therewith and to cover the cavity to retain the electric heating element therein and a tubular shank having its opening communicating with the opening of the cavity, and conductors extended through the tubular shank with the electric heating element, all as and for the purposes set forth.
