(Cl. 425 42) This invention relates to a single trigger for a double barrel gun either of the over or under barrel type or the ordinary type of parallel barrels arranged in the same plane and has for the 5 primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be readily set to fire either barrel and automatically adjust itself to find the second barrel after a firing of 10 Another object of this invention is the provision of a safety for preventing the firing f the second barrel by the recoil of the gun due to the firing of the first barrel.
With these and other objects in view this in- 15 vention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention,
:0 reference is tobe had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating a portion of a gun with my invention applied theretof v Figure 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts after the firing of a barrel of the gun.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a conventional type of gun breach employed for double barrel guns either of the over or under barrel type or the type having barrels arranged in the same plane. The breach 1 includes in its construction a frame 2, spring actuated hammers 3, sears i for holding the hammers in cocked position and a safety catch 5. These parts are all found in a gun of a well known construction and to which my invention is applied. A single trigger 6 is employed for firing either of the barrels and consists of a finger piece 1 integral with a body portion 8 of substantially L shape. The body portion 8 is pivoted to the frame 2, as shown at 9. The upper end of the vertical portion of the body portion 8 is bifurcated and has pivoted thereto a scar trip ii! to which is pivoted one end of a spring wire lever l I, the latter being pivoted to the body portion 8, as shown at l2. The horizontal portion of the body portion 8 has journaled thereto a shaft l3 arranged vertically and has secured to its upper end an elongated plate i l, one end of which has the other end of the lever I! pivoted thereto While the opposite end is offset to form a projection 15 adapted to ride into and out of spaced sockets it formed in the body portion 8. A finger piece llis secured'to the lower end of the 5 shaft l3 and is disposed exteriorly of the frame to the gun in convenient reach of the user so that the position of the sear trip can be varied. The sear trip i0 is mounted to swing about a horizontal axis and is provided with spaced cam faces I8 and spaced shoulders IS, the latter having beveled faces 20 and flat faces 2!. A projection 22 is formed integral with the sear trip and is arranged between the pairs of cam faces and the pairs of shoulders and is adapted to be engaged by the safety catch 5 when the latter is in one of its positions to lock the trigger 6 against operation. The sear trip'is arranged to operate in the space provided between the sears 4 and When in either of its positions it inclines laterally of the vertical portion of the body portion 8 of the trigger so that one projection and cam will be disposed in a plane slightly above the plane of the other projection and cam. The tilting of the trip is accomplished through the move- 25 ment of the finger piece I! so that the user of the gun may select which barrel to fire by the positioning of the finger piece H. The trip when incline'd'to the left in Figure 1 positions the shoulder 19 below the left-hand sear 4 while the opposite shoulder I9 is in a plane above the righthand sear so that on a pull on the finger piece 1 of the trigger, the vertical portion of the body portion 8 swings upwardly disengaging the lefthand sear to free the lefthand hammer thereby firing the left-hand barrel of the gun. It will be noted, again, that in the retracted position of the sear trip Hi the cams i9 must clear the sears 4 and 4. Thus as the finger piece 7 is released after the firing of the left-hand barrel, the left-hand sear moves off of the left hand shoulder 19 and being free from its hammer, engages the rounded shoulder l8 on the left-hand side of the trip and being spring pressed will shift the trip to the right thereby bringing the right-hand extension #9 in a plane below the right-hand sear so that on the second pull on the finger piece '1 of the trigger the right-hand sear will be disengaged from the right-hand hammer freeing the latter for firing of the righthand barrel of the gun. Thus upon the firing of one of the barrels and return of the trigger the sear of the barrel fired engages the rounded shoulder l8 on that side and throws the trip It! to the opposite side for the operation of the cordingly. The spring actuated hammers 3 have the usual widened ends whose edges are arched and formed with spaced teeth. 3'. Each sear 4 has a tooth 4' to engage with the teeth. 3.. Eachsear 4 is influenced towardthe toothed edge of the respective hammers by a spring 50, and the hammers 3 are cocked'in' theusual manner. As stated the sear trip controlled by the finger piece 11, moves one of the sears to bring the.

The finger piece I of the 23 shaped to conform to the'finger piece of the. trigger and pivoted thereto, as shown lever normally projects-slightlybeyond the finger engaging face of the finger piece I of the trigger so that when a pull is made on the finger piece i the lever 23 is caused to pivot and rock a safety dog 25 on its pivot 26. The safetydog is springpressed and is pivoted to the frame 2 and when rocked on its pivot by the. lever 23 moves to underlie a shoulder 21 on the body portion. of the trigger toprevent the trigger from moving or returning to. a' non-firingposition during the recoil or the gun caused by-firing-of one of the barrels. As soon as on the fingerpiece 1, the lever 23 pivots to its initial position permitting the spring-pressed dog 25 to move out of the path of the shoulder 21 and permit the trigger in entirety to return to its non-firing position.
The usual spring-pressed and pivotally mounted safety block 28 found in guns of this construction is shown mounted to the vertical portion of the body portion 8 of the trigger and does not form a part of the present invention. A cam or an enlargement 29 is formed on the lever I thus locking the ham-' mer engaged by this sear and moving the second and the projections trigger is bifurcated and has pivoted therein a safety actuating lever at 24. The" 7 body, means carried by adjusting the sear trip the user releases the finger '23 to engage with the dog 25 on the sear trip to engage with the sears whereby said sear trip may have its position varied by a sear after releasing of its respective hammer and the return of the body'to 'its'initial position whereby the trip is imposition for effecting the firing of. the other barrel I of the body by its finger piece, an. extension formed on the'sear trip between the cam faces to be engaged by a safety catch of the gun to prevent actuation of the trigger, a shoulder formed on the body, a safety dog pivoted to the gun frame and adapted to be moved in the path of the shoulderzto prevent gun recoil from actuatingthe trigger, and a lever pivoted to the finger piece for actuating the spring pressed dog when engaged by a lpersons finger being brought to bear on the finger piece.
