IMPROVEMENT lN BUTTON-FASTENERS.

i To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MIOHELSON, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Button-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to that class of buttons for securin g clothing and for similar purposes.
It consists of the arrangement of a button with a pointed stem, said stem being reduced to square or other angular form at the proper point, so as to receive a holding-plate, which is in turn secured by a novel locking device, which serves at once to hold the plate and also to prevent the point of the stem or shank from coming in contact with the person.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my button. Fig. 2 shows the parts separated.
A represents the top or face of the button, to which is attached the pointed stem or shank B, which is reduced in a square or angular form at the point C, as shown.
The locking device D, which engages with the angular portion 0 of the pointed stem, in the manner hereinafter described, and secures it in place, is made in a peculiar and novel form, as shown. It may be stamped or pressed out of metal in the usual manner, so as to have a depression, E, in its lower inner surface, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The outer central portion, F, of the locking device, has a rectangular slot, G, cut in it, corresponding in width and shape to the square or angular portion 0 of the pointed stem of shank B of the button.
The outer or upper rim of the locking device is not on the same plane, but a portion of it equal to one radius is slightly raised, as shown, and, being partially bent inward, forms a flange or stop, I. On the opposite edge of this outer rim is another raised portion or flange, J, which is very slightly bent inward to serve as a catch or spring to the holdingplate K. This holding-plate is made of the same size as the locking device of the button, and has a rectangular slot, L, cut in it, corresponding in width and shape to the square or angular portion 0 of the stem B, similar to the slot in the outer central portion of the locking device.
After the pointed stem or shank is pressed through the clothing in the position where the button is required, the locking device I) is placed on it by engaging the slot Gr in its central portion with the angular portion 0 of the stem or shank to secure it firmly in place. The holdingplate K is engaged with the point or stem in a similar manner by means of its slot L, and the flange J and upright portion J of the outer view of the looking device keep it in position. The button is thus attached to the clothing in a firm and permanent manner.
The portion of the stem or shank below the angular part remains in the recess E formed in the lower part of the locking device, so that it does not come in contact with the person. The lower portion may be entirely covered, if necessary, making a flat surface.
To remove the button when it is desired to do so is easily done by removing the holding-plate K and sliding the lockin g device I) away from the stem, when the top can be withdrawn.
In order to accomplish this easily, by the peculiar construction of the locking device a small space, M, is left between the outer rim of the head and the holding-plate K, in which the thumb or finger nail may be inserted, and a slight pressure will be sufficient to raise the holding-plate past the spring or raised portion J of the rim, when the plate may be easily slid out and removed. This will release the locking device, which may also be slid back from the stem or shank, and the outer part of the button removed.
I thus provide a neat and convenient button fastener, which requires no needle or thread to secure the button in place, is not apt to tear out, and may be easily removed when desired.
