DETACHABLE BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented .DIalg 20, 1917,
Application led October 14, 1.914. Serial No. 866,699.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK J. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in garment suspending devices and particularly to a clasp for engagement by the tab end of Suspenders.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and novel device of this character which can be quickly and easily attached to or detached from the trousers band.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will be eflicient in its operation to hold the suspender in proper engagement therewith.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the same attached to the trousers band, with the suspender in engagement therewith, Y l
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view longitudinally through the device in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged edge view of the device removed from the trousers band.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 and 11 represent two plates, the upper ends of which are secured together by the pin 11 and bent so as to eX- tend downwardly a short distance in parallel relation with the remainder of the plates. The extremity of the downturned portion of the plate 11 is bent inwardly at right angles toward the plate 10 as indicated at 12 while the corresponding end of the plate A 10 is bent at right angles as at 13in a direction toward the end of the plate 11 and in a plane above the inturned portion 12. The portion of the plate 10 above the angularly bent end is slightly offset to form a recess 14. A guard lever 15 is provided with a slot 16 which receives both of the portions 12 and 13 therethrough when the lever is in closed position, the upper angularly extending end 17 being disposed within the beforementioned recess 14.V Theportion of the plate 10 between its points of connection with the plate 11 and the offset portion is possessed of sucient resiliency to bear against the portion 17and hold the member 15' lirmly and'yieldably against the outer face ofthe plate 10. "As will be readily understood, the portions 12 and 13 act as a pivot through the slot 16 so that the guard y15 can be easily swung away from the plate into position to enter the buttonhole opening of the suspender tab. Secured to the inner face of the body portion of the plate 11 is a stud 20, the upper and lower faces of which are formed with barbs 21, the outer end of the said stud being sharpened so that the same can readily penetrate the cloth of the trousers band. In the plate 10 at a point directly opposite to the stud 20 are struck out the tongues 22 in such manner that an entrance opening 23 thereby is formed to receive the toothed end of the stud 20, the ends of the tongues being adapted to engage with the barbs to hold the plates firmly clamped on opposite sides of the trousers band. Secured to the outer face of the plate 10 is an ornamental plate 24 which covers the tongues 22 but is spaced from the plate a sufficient distance to permit the stud to pass beyond the tongues a slight distance.
In the operation of the device the plates 10 and 11 being normally moved away from each other, the trousers bandY is inserted soY therebetween and then the stud 2O forced y through the cloth and through the opening 23 until the barbs of the stud are properly engaged with the tongues 22. The device is then firmly attached to the trousers band. To engage the suspender end with the device, the member 15 is swung outwardly away from the plate 10 and inserted through the button-hole 18 of the tab. The tab will thus ride up into the space inclosed by the curved portion of the plates 10 and 11 and the weight of the trousers be taken at this point. The guard 15 is then swung back against the plate. The resiliency of the end of the plate 10 is such that it will hold the guard outwardly away from the plate as to permit the passage of the lower part of the portion l2 to pass therethrough when the guard is swung upwardly.
It will also be noted that the diiierenee between the inner vertical wall of the recess let and the opposite vertical portion of the end of the plate ll is less than the Width of the portion 17 so that when the member l5 is swung into position against the plate 10, this portion 17 presses against the loe- 'ore-mentioned portions of the plates l0 and l2 and moves the resilient end of the plate l0 away from the plate 1l. The member 1 5 Will thus be held against accidental outward movement away from the plate.
lVliat is claimed is:
.A clasp fastener comprising in combination, a base plate having an overturned portion overhanging its body, a second plate secured to the first plate and also having an overhanging portion lixed Within the overturned portion of the first plate, the overhanging ends interengaging to provide a resilient bearing, and a guard lever having an angularly shaped pintle mounted Within said resilient bearing, the angularly shaped pintle acting to spread the bearing during the motion of the guard lever into its open or closed position and said resilient hearing closing around the pintle to hold the guard lever in either its open or Closed position.
in testimony whereof, I alii); my signa ture, in the presence of tivo witnesses.
