Description

May 11, 1937. o. F. PLACCO INTERLOCK JEWELRY Filed Dec. 51, 1935 WL$ an A {1 0 rrzqy Patented May 11, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE INTERLOCK JEWELRY Application December 31, 1935, Serial No. 56,937
8 Claims.
My present invention relates to the jewelry art and has particular reference to a novel construction for ornaments and for brooches, pins, pendents and the like.
It is the principal object of my invention to devise a jewelry construction which consists of a plurality of separable parts, each part being independently useful as an ornament, the parts being adapted to lock together to form a composite ornament.
It is a further object of my invention to provide novel locking arrangements for detachably securing two ornaments in contiguous relation, while permitting quick separation thereof when the.
ornaments are to be used independently.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in View, my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a novel composite ornament;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ornament of Fig. 1, showing the parts in separated position;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1, broken away to show the locking connection;
Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Figs. 2 and 3, showing a modified locking construction; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are views similar to Figs. 2 and 3 showing a further modified locking construction.
Referring to the drawing, the novel ornament I0 is composed of two separate parts I I, I2, which may be of any material, size or shape, but which have linear sides I3, [4 adapted to be positioned in contiguous relation, the side l3 having mounted therein a metal strip I5 having a plurality of outwardly extending spring tongues 16, preferably struck up from the metal of the strip, and the side l4 having a metal strip l'l provided with a plurality of spaced openings l8 adapted to releasably lockingly receive the tongues I6, the ornament [2 being recessed as indicated at l9 to receive these tongues. The tongues do not project laterally sufficiently to prevent use of the ornaments II and I2 as. ornaments per se; to join the two ornaments II and I2 to form the composite ornament III, the strips [5 and I! are placed in adjacency and the tongues l6 are inserted through the openings l8, whereby the two ornaments are locked together as disclosed in Fig. 3.
Each ornament may have a separate fastening device, for securing to a dress, a hat, a bag or the like, such as a clip or a pin secured to the rear surface thereof in usual fashion, the preferred holding device being a hinged spring clip secured to the back of each ornament. If desired, a metal frame having an independent clip and having recesses to detachably lockingly receive the two ornament clips may be used; but the invention is not in the arrangements for holding the ornaments in place, and instead is in the means for looking a plurality of ornaments together so as to form a composite integral-appearing ornament.
Instead of using the detachably securing means shown in Figs 2 and 3, the ornament 20, see Fig. 4, may be provided at one edge 2| with a strip 22 having spaced lock buttons 23, and the associated ornament 24 may have at its edge 25 a strip 26 having spaced keyhole openings 21, the ornament 24 having recesses 28 as shown in Fig. 3
to receive the heads of the lock buttons 23, which L are insertable through the upper enlarged portion of the keyhole openings and are then slid down to lock within the keyholes, as disclosed in Fig. 3.
A different form of detachable locking may be used, as disclosed in Figs. 6 and '7, in which the ornament 29 has a metal strip 30 secured to its side 3|, this metal strip having spaced pivot fingers 32 at one end thereof, guide tabs 33 along the length thereof, and an end spring tab 34, the corresponding ornament 35 having a metal strip 36 adjacent its contiguous side 31, this metal strip also having at least one spacing tab 38, and pivot slots 39 at the lower end to receive the spaced fingers 32, whereby the spaced fingers 32 may be inserted in the pivot slots and the spring tab 34 then snapped over the edge 40 of the strip 36 to seat in a recess 4| provided at the ornament 35, the guide tabs respectively gripping the sides of the contiguous strips to assist in maintaining the two ornaments in adjacent alignment.
Although I have disclosed the use of metal strips, which construction is preferred with ornaments such as clips and the like, and which are generally made of White metal for rhinestone and jeweled ornamentation, it is obvious that the bases of the ornaments may be made of metal, and that the strips may be integral with such metal bases. Other locking arrangements may be used, if desired, and changes in the type of the lock, in the manner of locking, and in the number and relative positioning of the locking parts, may be made to suit the requirements for different ornaments, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, two ornaments having contiguous linear sides, metal strips on said sides, one strip having a projecting element, andthe other strip having an opening for detachably receiving the projecting element, the ornament having said other strip being recessed adjacent said opening to receive the projecting element.
2. In combination, two ornaments having contiguous linear sides, metal strips on said sides, one strip having spaced projecting elements, and the other strip having spaced openings for detachably receiving the projecting elements, the ornaments having said other strip being recessed adjacent said openings for receiving the project.- ing elements.
3. In combination, two ornaments havin contiguous linear sides, metalstrips on said sides, a plurality of spaced spring tongues on one strip, and a plurality of spaced tongue receiving openings in the other strip.
4. In combination, two ornaments having contiguous. linear sides, metal strips on said sides, a plurality of spaced lock buttons on one strip, and a plurality of spaced button receiving openings in the other strip, the ornament having said other strip being recessed adjacent the openings to receive the lock buttons.
5. In combination, two ornaments having contiguous linear sides, and cooperating snap lock means on said sides comprising a spring tongue on one side and a lock opening on the other side for detachably locking said ornaments together.
6. In combination, two ornaments having contiguous linear sides, cooperating means on said ornaments detachably engageable together, and additional cooperating snap lock. means on said sides for locking said first mentioned means in connected relation, and detachably locking said ornaments together.
7. In combination, two ornaments having contiguous linear sides, and metal strips on said sides, the lower ends of said strips having cooperating means which are detachably co-nnectable, and the OSCAR FRANK PLACCO.
