5 This invention relates to a fuse for projectiles. e purpose of the inventionis to provide a bore safe fuse especially adapted for a projectile that is 5to be red from a smooth bore mortar. This is accomplished by a simple and inexpensive arrangementnin which a*y cap holding the ring mechanism in safe position is removed after the projectile leaves the bore of the gun.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combinaition of elements,
specification.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is 2O a longitudinal sectional view of the improved fuse with the parts in unarmed or safe position.
Referring tothe drawing by characterswof refv erence, the fuse casing comprises a body 5having a reduced rear end 6 whereby it is threadedly attached to a projectile A cup 8 threadedly .car
ried by the rear end of the fuse body is disposed within` the projectile and contains a booster charge 9. The fuse body 5 is formed with an axial passage .30 I0? and an intersecting transverse passage II. A

The ring pin, -when received in th 'aperture I4, holds Athe bolt in the unarmed or safe position with the primer detonator I3 at. oneside of the axial passage II) and out of line with the firing pin and a charge I 6 in the lower or inner part of the axial passage. A spring I1 conned between the bolt and a plug I8 threaded to the body 5 serves to move the when 'the iiring pin is withdrawn so as to position the primer detonator betweenthe firing pin and charge I6.

The cup 20 is normally held in ring position within the body 5 and against the action of the a cap 24 which-is threaded on the reduced front end 25 of the body. The cup 20 is of a predetermined height to maintain a clearance 26 between the cap and the shoulder of the body and thereby prevent jamming and assure rotation of the cap. A propeller 21 is secured to the front face of the cap by means of rivets 28.
The fuse is safe when the parts'are in the retheiiiring pin I5 inthe bolt I2. When a projectile carrying the fuse is iired from a mortar the propeller is rotated by the airfand the cap 24 is unscrewed from the fuse body 5. The cup 20 carrying the ring pin follows the cap under the influence of its spring until arrested by the ring 23. 'I'he bolt I2 moves to' armed position so that. on impact the ring pin will be driven into the primer detonator I3. I
'I'he threaded connection between the cap 24 and fuse body 5 is of suiicient length to prevent removal of the cap while the fuse is in the bore of the gun.

1. A fuse including a body having areduced front end with a cavity, an inverted cup in the cavity and having a flange on its inn'er end, a
` spring normally tending to move the cup to an a iring pin xed to the cup, a cap threaded on thereduced front end of the body ,and holding the cup in retracted position within thecavity, a propeller on the cap, a bolt mounted in the body for sliding movement transversely thereof, a primer detonator in the bolt, a spring for moving the bolt to armed posi ion, said bolt normally held in unarmed position bythe ring pin when the-cap is in place on the fuse body.
2. A fuse including a body, a ring pin in the body, a spring, normally tending to move the firing pin to an extruded ring position, means for limiting extrusion of'the ring pin. a cap threaded on the front end of the body and ho1ding the tiring pin in retracted position, Aa propeller on the cap, a bolt mounted in the body for lation shown in the drawing, the cap 24 holding 3. A fuse including a body having a cavity in its front end, an inverted cap in the cavity and having a. iange on its inner end, a spring normally tending to move the cup to an extruded ring position, a ring fixed in the mouth of the cavity and limiting movement of the cup, a ring pin xed to the cup, a cap threaded on the front 4 end of the body and holding the cup within the cavity against the action of its spring, and means on the cap whereby the cap is removed during ilight.
