This invention relates to wear facings of gloves. n

This invention has utility in wear facings,

especially of the digit facings and backings,

more especially for the thumb and index finger digits, whether fabric or even leather.

Referring to the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention in a work glove, with the thumb in normal position for the wearer when in use; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing thrown out or extended position for the thumb; Fig. 3 is a side elevation, say from the top of Fig. 1, with the thumb in the natural position forwardly of the plane of the palm;

Fig. 4 is a distributed view of the palm facing blank with finger back facing sections;

Fig. 5 is a view of the wrist extension blank for the thumb and index digit backs;

Fig. 8 is a view of the gauntlet blank. -Facing or main section involves major palm portion I having front digit-portions 2 of the little finger, 3 of the third finger, 4 of the second or middle finger, and 5 of the index finger. From this index finger is terminal notch 6 to index finger back 7. Between the middle finger 4 and index finger 5 crotch 8 is approximately in line with palm portion terminus 9 toward the wrist. There is thus provided approximately half facing section made up of this major palm portion land the digits 2, 3, 4, with complementary approximately half palm facing made up of the index finger front 5, back I, with thumb front l0, back ll, separated by notch l2.

A line of direction of wrist edge l3 of the palm I is the direction of this thumb digit from minor portion M with the thumb back ll having edge l5, approximately in line with the edge I3. It is thus seen that this thumb direction is for each digit approximately at right angles to the index finger direction. Middle finger back I6 is bilaterally symmetrical and symmetrical with the adjacent side of the back 1 for the index finger. Third finger back I! is symmetrical with the adjacent side of the middle finger back 16, and is similarly symmetrical with the adjacent side of little finger back l8. finger back I8 has wrist extension l9. Accordingly, the blank 20 has portion 22 stitchassembled with portion 23 by stitching from index finger back portion 24 across the index finger knuckle. This stitching between the portions 22, 23, is to crotch 25 between the index finger and thumb. Continuation of this stitching across the crotch of the thumb assembles portion 26 for the blank 20 with the portion l0 and extends to the notch [2 in the assembly at the tip of the thumb between the portions Ill, II. There is thus provided the closed tip for the thumb. This blank 20 is assembled across the back of the thumb at portion 21 with the portion 15 by stitching 28.

Blank 20 is desirably assembled with the blank I by stitching 28 along a portion of the thumb back over the region of the second knuckle from the tip and toward the wrist before the thumb is closed. Opposite edge 29 of this blank 20 may be engaged by stitching 3|] continuous therefrom over the portion 24 and base portions 3|, 32, of the respective blank finger backs l6, l1, and along edge 33 of the finger back l8. Over the back 2| between the edges 33 and. 30, holding elastic 34 may contribute in holding the glove to shape; while stitching 35 may assemble gaunlet 36 in completing this article of apparel.

Stitching 31 at the thumb tip is continuous as to the portion 20 across the crotch and leaves the side of the thumb as forward or in working position as to the palm seamless. There is, accordingly, no puckering in any of the palm portions or working regions adjacent thereto tending to detract from the wear properties of this article. From the notch 6 at the index finger, stitching 38 may be continuous thereover in assembling the backing I with the front 5, the backing It with the front 4, the backing I! with the front 3, and the backing I8' with the front 2, and this seam 38 going to the wrist. The crotch portions 39 between the digits have stitch assembly 40 therebetween from the stitching 30 to the stitching 38.

Approximating rectangular form for the major facing portion means economy in fabric. There is simplified construction in assembly with reduced lineal stitching and thread saving. Notwithstanding the seemingly right angle direction throw for the thumb relative to the palm, in the glove set-up the fullness there is not in excess of that for the thumb mount. The resulting article is one having ease for wear as well as comfort, with substantial wear promotion properties. Manufacturing advantage is as much as 20 per cent over the conventional type of full first finger and full thumb glove, whether canton flannel or leather.

What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hand covering having a facing unit comprising a palm part provided with an index finger and a thumb forming member, said thumb forming member and index finger blank extending approximately at right angles to each other, said parts each being terminally notched providing major back portions and palm portions for the index finger and the thumb, the thumb back being completed by a wedge-like member connecting the side edges of the thumb memher, said wedge-like member increasing in width toward the base of the thumb and provided with an integral widened base forming a part of the glove back, the seams connecting the wedge-like member, and the thumb being located at the crotch side of the thumb and back side only,

whereby the thumb presents a seamless front and substantially seamless back.

2. In a hand covering, a glove structure embodying a palm, thumb, fingers, back, said palm and back extending to a wrist and there being a crotch between the thumb and fingers, a wedgelike member bounded by a first stitching section from the thumb crotch directly to the back region in progressively increasing distance from the Wrist, and therefrom a second stitching section toward the wrist, from said crotch a third stitching section short of the thumb tip, and therefrom a fourth stitching section across the back of the thumb approximately parallel to the second stitching section and toward the wrist, said third and fourth stitching sections having wedge-like portion terminus of the member therebetween with the first stitching section extending from the third stitching section to complete member width from said terminal, the member width therefrom being determined by said second and fourth stitching sections.
