1 Claim.

This invention relates to improvements in gloves, and more especially to the class of gloves which have leather facings or palm portions and are known as workmens gloves.

Objects of the invention are to provide an im proved glove of the type referred to, to provide an improved workmens glove having a. leather palm and a cloth back in combination with a full leather thumb, the construction being so designed that all portions of the glove subject to the greatest wear are of leather and a strong, durable, and inexpensive construction is afforded.

The invention with other objects and advantages thereof and the particular form, combination, and arrangement of parts comprising the same will be understood from the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and illustrating two embodiments of the invention.

While speciiic embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the drawings, it Will of course be understood that minor changes may be made in the particular constructions shown and the invention may be embodied in other forms as will appeal to those skilled in the art and falling within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to a detailed description of the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 8 of the drawings, the construc- 5 tion shown comprises the blank I, illustrated in Figure 4, formed from a continuous piece of leather and including a' palm section 2, portions 3, 4, 5, and 6 adapted to form the fronts of the ngers, and a part 'I projecting from one side of l0 the blank and designed to form the front of the thumb. In providing said thumb piece, the blank is cut to form a straight slit 8 extending downwardly and inwardly from one side edge thereof; and, as shown, the blank has a curved edge porl5 tion 9 extending upwardly from its lower edge to the adjacent curved edge of the thumb piece.

A blank Il) is provi-ded. to form the back of the thumb, the same comprising a main part I0' to match the thumb part 1 of the blank I and having 20 at one side of said main part the straight edge portions II and I2 to match the straight edge portions bordering the slit 8 'in the blank I. The straight edge portions I I and I2, as shown, diverge downwardly substantially away from each other 25 and converge to a substantially projected intermediate portion. 'I'he back thumb piece IIJ, like the blank I, is made of leather.

The back of the glove is formed from a plurality of blanks or strips I3, I4, I5, and I6 o1' cloth 80 laid parallel and the marginal portions of adjacent strips being united by stitching, said strips constituting the main back portion of the glove and also the backs of the iingers.

In forming the glove, the front-thumb piece I 35 isI folded back and the main part I0 of the thumb piece Ill is stitched thereto and to the adjacent curved edge portion 9 of the palm section 2. The straight edge portions II and I2 of the thumb piece I 0 are stitched to the straight marginal 40 edge portions that extend along the slit 8, and the adjoining side edge oi' the thumb back piece is secured to a side edge portion of the back of the glove. The cloth back is then secured to the front oi the glove by stitching at the side edges 5 and by stitching the: edgesl of the iinger portions of the front of the glove to the edges of the finger portions of the back of the glove. II designates a reinforcing strip interposed in the seam extending along the crotch between the thumb and n- 50 ger, and I8 and I9 are linings of any suitable material for the palmv portion, the leather fronts of the ngers, and the thumb. Leather facings 20 are provided for the backs and sides of the tip portions oi' the fingers, said facings being 65 stitched along the top and side edges to the edges of the tip portions of the leather fronts of the fingers.

By theparticular form of thumb back blank IU having the main part I0 to match with the thumb front part 1 of the blank I and provided at one side thereof with the straight edge portions I I and I2 diverging substantially away from each other and converging to a substantially projected intermediate portion, in conjunction With the blank I having the straight slit 8, as hereinbefore described, the seam between the edge portions II and I2 of the thumb back piece and the elongated edge portions along the slit 8 extends forwardly of the crease or line of the inner side of the ball of the thumb. This construction provides for a snug iit of the glove to the hand in the crotch between the. thumb and fore-finger, and the desired freedom in the movement of the thumb and fore-finger in gripping objects, the particular location of the seam Vwith reference to the crease or line of the inner side of the ball of the thumb also being advantageous in providing a durable construction.

The glove is shown provide-d with a tubular knit Wrist portion 2| sewed thereto, and stitched to the Wrist portion and to the wrist seam is a strip of leather 22.

The modified construction illustrated in Figures 9 to 13 of the drawings has a full cloth back 23. The construction comprises a main front blank 24 formed of a single piece of leather and having a palm portion 25, front thumb part 2B, and linger sections 21, 28 Which form the front and sides of the iirst and fourth lingers. A piece of leather 29, shown in Figure 12, forms the fronts of the second and third fingers, said piece being folded along the slit 30 therein'and the edge portions 3i, 32 stitched to the edge portion 33 of the blank 24. The back of the thumb is formed by a leather piece 34, this being of the same shape as the back thumb piece shown in Figure 5. The numerals 35 designate leather faeings for the back and sides of the tip portions of the fingers, these being similar in construction to and being stitched at their top and side edges to the edges of the tip portions of the leather fronts of the lingers, as in the construction illustrated in Figures l to 8.

In this modied construction, the glove is provided with the gauntlet 36, and the blank 24 has a lower portion 31 formed continuous therewith extending over and stitched to the gauntlet.

- What I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

, A glove comprising a continuous blank of leather constituting a palm section, front nger portions, and a front thumb portion projecting laterally from one side edge thereof, a cloth back for the' glove,V including a main back portion and finger backs, said first mentioned blank having a straight slit 8 extending a substantial distance at an inclination downwardly and inwardly from one side edge thereof below the base of the front of the first finger and creating corresponding elongate-d edge Vportions intermediate the said thumb and palm portions, and a separate thumb back portion of leather comprising a main part of a shape to match with the front thumb portion and having at one side of said main part straight edge portions II and I2 to match with the said elongated edge portions along the slit 8 in the first mentioned blank, said straight edge portions II and I2 diverging substantially away from each other and converging to a substantially projected intermediate portion, said main thumb back portion being stitched along its marginal edge to the edge of the front thumb portion,

, the diverging straight edge portions II and I2 of the thumbback portion being stitched to the edge portions that extend .along the slit 8, and the adjoining side edge portion of the thumb back porrtion being stitched to an edge portion of the back of the glove.
