Description

J. H. WILSON. Ditching-Maohifie.
N0. 207,376. Patented Aug. 27.1878.
1' TATE S PATENT QFFIGE JOHN H. WILSON, OF RUSSEL TOIVNSHIP, PUTNAM COUNTY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEIVIENT IN DITCHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming pa1t of Letters Patent N0. 207,376, (lated August 27, 1878; application filed April 29, 1878.
T0 all whom it mag; conce1n.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. VVILSON, of Russel township, in t11e county of Putnam ancl State of Indiana, have invented a new and nseful Ditehing-Maohine, of which the following is a clesoript-ion, reference being hacl t0 the aocompanying clrawings.
My invent-ion relates to a ditching-maohine, and has f01 its objeot the removal of superfluons di1t fron1 the bottom of a treneh previously eut in tl1e ground, ancl the forrning of an additional clitoh or narrow reoeptacle at the bottom of said trench, of snffioient depth and Width to receive ancl hold seotions 0f tile ancl prevent the1n from being separated o1 displaoed at the joints, thereby seouring an unobstruotecl fiow of water through a pipe composed of many seetions.
Heretofore tile have been laid on the bottom of a treneh wl1ere the trenoh is so wide as to per1nit said tile to beeome displaeecl 01 separated at the joints, thereby oausing dirt to enter at tl1e clisjointecl parts and obstrnct the flow of water, produoing very nnsatisfaotory drainage.
My invention consists of a newlyconstructecl clitching-maohine, consisting of a frame provicled with a curved outter or sooop-plow below the frame and a groovecl inolined plane extencling frorn tl1e l1eel of the scoop-plow to a receiving-box above tl1e frame, and a lever for tl1e attachment of draft-horses.
In tl1e aoeompanying clrawings, in whioh like letters of reference in the different fignres inclioate like parts, Fignre 1 represents a longitudinal vertioal seetion of my newly-organized ditohing-maohine. Fig. 2 is a top view of tlle saxne, and Fig. 3 represents a crossseetion of the machine in a trenoh.
A A represent the side sills, united together by the cross-bars B B at each end. F represents an inolined plane providedwith a groove, G. 'll1e groove l inolinecl plane F G is attached to tl1e sills AA, ancl projeot-s below and above saicl frame, anal is secured at the top to the fioor D of the receiving-box. The sicles E E ancl back O of tl1e reoeiving-box are also seoured to tl1e sills A A and to the floor D, and project npward, so as to fonn a box with two sides and one end. The other or front end, being open, allows the (ll1b that is forced np tl1e grooved inolinecl plane F G as tl1e ditol1er n1oves forwarcl to be deposited on the floor E of the reoeiving-box.
'lhe curved cntter or sooop-plow 11 is secured. to tl1e sills A A by bolts P, and tl1e ourvecl bottom j is attaol1ed to the projeoting lower end of tl1e groovecl inclined plane F G, With an inclination similav to that shown in Fig. l.
Tl1e lever J is pivote l at L between the sills A A, and projeots above the top of the frame, so that when the machine is in a trenoh, as sl1own in Fig. 3, the lever J will project above the surface 0f the ground, and. admit of a chain being seoured to it and to the drafthorses for tl1e purpose of clrawing the maohine along in the trenoh.
'Ihe operation of 1ny ditehing-maehine is as follows, to wit: The maohine is lowerecl iuto a treneh previously out in the grouncl, With a ohain attached to the lever J and to the (lraft-horsS, and as the maohine is clrawn along in the trenoh tl1e enrved sooop-plow H plows a fnrrow 01 ditoh at the botton1 of said trenol1, the sillsA A1iding 011 the bottom of the original trenoh and regulating the depth of tl1e sooop-plow H, as shown in Fig. 3. .lhe (1i1t removed by the ourved sooopplow H is taken fro1n tl1e Center of the treneh ancl foroed up tl1e inclined plane I G into the receivingbox O E D from wl1ioh it is re- 1noved by shovels. The groove or furrow forn1ecl at the bottom of the trenoh is of Sulfieient width and depth to reoeive tl1e tile and hold tl1e nu1nerous sections all in line. If 110 tile is 110 be had, then pieces 0f fiat stones 01' timber rnay be laid on the bottom of the trenoh, resting on the upper edges of the ditoh below, where the sills A A l1ave traveled, and leave a good clean diteh for wate1 to flow umlerneath; and if the (litoh is 1nade in olay, the drainage will be almost as good as if tile were used; butif tl1e soil is samly, then tl1e tile should be used to prevent the ditoh fro1n fillin g; np.
Vl1at I elaim as new, aml desire to secu1e by Letters Patent, is-
In testimony whereof I ha-ve signed mv name t0 this specificmion in the presence 0f tw0 subseribing witnesses.
JOHN H. VILSON.
