UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM H. BROWNSON, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,535, dated July 30, 1878; application filed December 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BROWN- SON, of St. Paul, in the State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and. operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my improved collar. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the combined guard-housing and billet, and Figs. 4 and 5 are details.
This invention has for its object the improvement of horse-collars.
The nature of the invention consists in the combination of a bent rim and pad, formed of two overlapped strips of leather, the latter being bent around to form a pad-case, and stitched to the welt, and the former extended outward beyond the pad, to form a housing, and stitched thereto.
It also consists in the combination, with a horse-collar open at the withers, and provided with buckles at each side of the opening, of a double billet, a neck-guard, and the housing secured thereto, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In' the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a collar for horses and mules, and consisting of a fore-Wale, a, and an after-Wale, body-side, or pad, 1), between which is a crease, c, for the reception of the hames.
The fore-Wale a is made of wood of any suitable description, and, being of proper dimensions and shape,is first steamed and then bent into the proper shape.
The after-Wale or pad bis made of two pieces of leather, d d, which, being overlapped, as shown in Fig. 2, are rigidly secured, along with a welt-strip, c, to the wooden rim to aforesaid, preferably by means of a suitable number of barbed staples, f. I may, however, use brad-headed nails if I so elect. The free edge of the piece 01 is then turned under, and securely stitched to the welt-strip e aforesaid, thus forming a leather tube which, being stuffed, constitutes the pad or cushion. The cushion thus formed is then secured, by stitching, as shown at '5, to the part d, which is sufficiently wide to form an overlapping guard, g, for the protection of the collar from wet weather. The rim ais thus properly attached to the pad, and efi'ectually holds the collar, of which it is a part, in shape.
At each side of the opening, at the withers of the collar, a suitable buckle, h, is rigidly secured, for the reception of the double billet D. This billet is riveted, or otherwise rigidly secured, at its middle portion to a housing composed of two pieces of leather, placed the one upon the other, and secured to gether only at one point. The lower leather, f, of this housing is passed under the ends of the collar and the upper leather, 1, outside of the same, and the ends of the billet passed into the buckles k. If the collar should be too short, by letting out the billet one or more holes, as the case may be, this defect may be speedily and effectually rectified.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the bent rim a, the pad 1), formed of two overlapped strips of leather, d d, the latter being bent around to form a pad-case, and stitched to the welt e, and the former extended outward beyond the pad to form a housing, g, and stitched thereto, substantially as specified.
2. The combi ation, with a horse-collar open at the and provided with buckles at each side of said opening, of the double billet and the neck-guard f, and housing Z secured thereto, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. BROWNSON. Witnesses:
RALPH BROWNSON, JOHN F. SNYDER.
