IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,650, dated May 14, 1878 application filed March 20, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN FRIEDRICH SAUER, of Somonauk, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Gollars, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a front view of one of my improved horse-collars. Fig. 2 is a detail crosssection taken through the line :0 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the shape or pattern of the bellyleather.

The object of this invention is to furnish improved collars for horses and mules, which shall be simpler in construction, and at the same time neater and more durable, than collars constructed in the usual way.

The invention consists in an improved collar, in which the cover of the rim is a single piece of leather, and the cover of each belly is a single piece of leather having slits formed in'its outer or forward edge, and in which the overlapping strips are held together, and the belly and rim covers, at the lower end of the collar, are held together and strengthened by rivets, as hereinafter fully described.

A represents the rim of the collar, the cover of which is formed of a single piece of leather. B represents the bellies of the collar, each of which is covered with a single piece of leather. The inner or rear edge of the cover B is cut with a slight swell, to give the necessary fullness to the leather. In the outer or forward edge of the cover B are formed three slits, b b b as shown in Fig. 3. In forming the belly the strips b b are drawn together beneath the strip 12 and are secured to each other by one or more rivets, b the said strips b serving as a wear-leather.

If desired, a piece of leather maybe placed upon the inner side of the overlapped strips b b b and secured in place by a rivet, to prevent the stuffing from working out, and to stifi'en the said strips against the pressure of the hame-tug.

The strip 11 is drawn in beneath the strip b The outer edges of the strips 11 b b b are so shaped that they will be held in place by the thread that sews the rim and bellies together.

The lower ends of the two covers B overlap each other, and are secured to each other by a rivet, O. The lower end of the collar is further strengthened by a rivet, D, which passes through the collar at the point where the corners of the lower ends of the covers B and the edges of the rim-cover A overlap each' other. The rivet D also protects the thread that connects the edges of the belly and rim covers from wear, and thus makes the collar more durable. The upper ends of the parts of the collar are connected by buckles and straps, and are provided with a guard-leather or pad in the usual way.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent- An improved collar in which the cover of the rim is a single piece of leather, and the cover of each belly is a single piece of leather, having the slits b 1) formed in its outer or forward edge, and in which the overlapping strips 6 b are held together, and the belly and rim covers at the lower end of the collar are held together and strengthened by rivets, substantially as herein shown and described.
