5 Claims.
This invention relates to paper dispensing containers for paper in the roll, and aims to provide an improved and novel form of container having, among others, the novel features hereinafter de- 5 scribed and illustrated.
In the drawings of one form of my invention selected for illustration and description:

Fig. 3, an enlarged vertical cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, looking toward the right. Referring first to Figs. l, 2, 3, my novel paper container and dispenser comprises a bracket including a suitable back or base I for supporting the container, from which is extended an arm 2, carrying upon its outer end a curved supporting `plate 3.
To this plate is Secured, in any convenient man- 2() ner, as by rivets 4, the lower semi-cylindrical container member 5, to which is pivoted along the rear edge 6, as by hinges 1, the rear edge 8 of a complementary upper semi-cylindrical member 9.
The ends, Figs. 2, 3, of the two semi-cylindrical members are folded backwardly and then outwardly as at I9 on part 9, and as at lila on part 5, to reinforce and stiffen the container, and in these ends are set cup-shaped end members Il, free of the up-per container member 9, but se- Y cured as by rivets 4a to the lower container member 5.
The front edges of the two dispenser cylindrical members, Fig. 3, are bent outwardly, forming,
respectively, a lip I2 and a flange I3, which are normally positioned slightly apart for a purpose that will appear, the flange also being extended out far enough to be provided with a paper feeding slot I4, and to be bent downwardly and have provided therein an inwardly turned paper end l guide I5 and paper severing edge I6. The paper guide may be formed by cutting sections of the flange and bending them inwardly therefrom, and
acts to position the paper end I9 conveniently away from the cutting edge |6, `and enable the user at al1 times to readily grasp the end of the paper.
To provide an eective paper feeding, protecting and drag-producing path for thevpaper, the
upper semi-cylindrical member is provided with circumferentially spaced paper feeding means, in
this case apertures I1 in the member wall, with inturned fianges, between two of which apertures I1, I1a., as the paper I8 passes during its travel to the severing edge, it is subjected to the desired degree of drag, which helps to cause it to be fed evenly, with a tendency to augment the effect of springs 39, to be referred to. y
For the purpose of preventing the paper from unrolling during the act of severing a section of it, regardless of the texture, strength of fibre or 5 weight of the paper, and prevent any reflex action of the roll tending to withdraw the free end of the paper after a Section has been severed, there is provided, Figs. 1, 2, 3, a stop member 20 on the top member 9, comprising a long, suitable sheath 10 or casing 2|, as of metal, within which is a core of suitable material as wood 22, covered with any convenient material as leather or felt 23, which member 29 engages the paper between the opposed separated edges of the sheath 2|, and pre- 15 vents it from feeding, as will be pointed out. The Stop 29 carries at each end an arm 24, with an eye 25, which receives a post 26 on each dispenser end II. The post 26 has a cap 21 removably threaded to it and locking to the reduced end of the post 26 the arm 24, so that, to permit the placing of a new ro-llV of paper in the container and the convenient feeding of its forward end from the slot I1 to slot |10., the cap 21 may be removed, and the stop 29 withthe arm 24 raised. A guide post 3| on the member 9, and shown in Fig. 2 as broken away at its top for convenience, is also provided for the arm 24 to keep the same and member `2li in central position on the upper semi-cylindrical member 9. This post 3| is slotted vertically as at 30 28, Fig. 3, to permit the member 24 to be raised sufciently in said slot after the cap 21 on the post 26 is removed, to allow the member 24 to be released from the post 26 and be rotated in the slot 28, and the member 20 thus swung or rocked 35 laterally on the top of the container on the axis of the member 24, and out of the Way, for the above purpose.
T'he folded end edge of the member 9 has an elongated circumferential slot 29 to permit theA 40 member 9 to be raised when raising the member 29, as described, and avoid the post 26, as when it is desired to supply a new roll of paper.
The member 9 is provided with a plurality of, herein three, springs 30, secured to the rear of the interior wall of the member 5, and with their free ends resting against the adjacent inner wall of the upper member 9, and they exert sufficient pressure thereon to cause it to be normally raised slightly to engage the stop member 29 to offset 50 any tendency of the loose paper endto be drawn inwardly after a section of thesame has been severed, as already Suggested.
For use, the roll of paper is placed loosely in the container as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose 55 of creating an opposing pull or friction on the paper, by virtue of the fact that the paper being drawn from beneath the roll contacts with the container wall throughout the length of the roll, and the free forward edge of the paper is then carried out through the nearest slot II, beneath the stop 2t, then back into the housing through the next slot 11a, and then out again through the next slot Ilb, and down through the slot I 4, as shown, where the paper end I9 hangs freely and always convenient for use. The feeding of the `paper through the slots IIb and I4 produces a slight drag, which tends to draw the upper semicylindrical'member 9 downward, preparatory to severing the paper from the roll.
When a section of the paper is to be removed from the housing, the free edge I9 is drawn down against the guide I5 to provide the free length of paper desired, and then outwardly and V upwardly against the severing edge I6, and torn loffalong said edge.
In drawing the paper from the housing or container, the hinged upper half 9 of the housing is drawn down slightly about its hinged rear edge,
freeing somewhat its grip with the member 20- Yupon the paper, but as the paper is severed along the edge I 6, the member 9 is naturally moved upwardly somewhat by the springs 30, and against the stop member 2i) which prevents any unrolling and rerolling of the free end of the paper after the section of paper is severed and the pull upon the paper is released. The springs thus hold the upper container member 9 as described against the stop member 20, which again grips the paper and ensures a convenient free lengthy of paper suspended as shown.
As the distance from the hinge I to the severing edge I6 is approximately more than two and one-half times the distance from the hinge to the vertical plane passing through the longitudinal aXisvof the member 2D, the leverage relationship between said elements is such that when an upward pull of any magnitude on the severing edge is exerted in severing the paper, said upward pull serves but to increase the clamping action, and hence the friction of the stop member 20 and cylindrical member 9 on the paper strip between them in the same proportion, and thus positively to prevent any tendency on the part of, the paper to unroll during the time a section of the paper is being severed.
My invention is not restricted to the particular embodiment thereof described and illustrated.
I claim:
1. Paper dispensing means comprising a container member, a movable top therefor with a paper positioning flange and a paper severing edge, paper feeding Velements on the top, leading to the positioning flange, and a paper feeding stop member vertically movable on and also rockable on the body member to facilitate the placing of a new roll of paper therein, and acting with the top member after the travel of the paper toward the severing edge to grip the paper and prevent unrolling thereof during the paper severing action.
2. Paper containing and dispensing means comprising a container member, a movable top therefor hinged thereto with a paper positioning flange and a paper severing edge, the top having a series of paper feeding elements therein forming a path for the paper and leading to the positioning flange and severing edge, and a paper rerolling and unrolling stop member on and above the container body, the top member during the paper severing action providing, -with the stop member, a clamping action to 'grip the paper with a. force as much greater in proportion than the force exerted in severing the paper as the distance from the hinge of thecontainer top member to the paper severing edge exceeds the distance from the hinge to a vertical plane passing through the point of contact between the top member and stop member.
3. Paper dispensing means comprising a container body member, a movable top member therefor, yieldable to deliver the paper, a spring on the container normally tending to raise the top, a paper positioning ange and a paper severing edge on the container, the top member having a series of paper feeding apertures therein, forming a tortuous path for the paper and leading to the positioning flange and severing edge. Paper dispensing means comprising a container for the paper comprising a body member, a movable top member therefor yieldable to deliver the paper, and with a paper positioning element and a. paper severing edge; a spring on the-body normally tending to raise the top, the top having a series of paper feeding apertures therein disposed to create a pull on the top by the paper feeding action, and a stop member yon the body member acting with the upward movement of the top to prevent the paper from withdrawing into the container after a section has been severed.
5. Paper containing and dispensing means comprising a container with end members for the paper and including a movable top thereon with a paper rerolling and unrolling stop member outside the top,a paper positioning fiange on the top, the latter having a paper severing edge acting, during the paper severing action, as a lever for raising the top member against the stop member to cause them to grip the paper therebetween outside the container.
