Description

Oct. 13, 1936. P. D. PECK ET AL METALLIC BASEBOARD CQNSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 5, 1935 Patented Oct. 13, 1936 2,057,204 METALLIC BASEBOARD CONSTRUCTION Percy D. Peck and Albert L. Lloyd, Joliet, Ill., assignors to Knapp Brothers Manufacturing Company, Joliet, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application December 5, 1935, Serial No. 52,936
11 Claims.
This invention relates to a metallic baseboard construction and concerns itself primarily with a structure stamped or formed to provide parallel rails for slidably supporting a post holding memher and which may be quickly anchored in position.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred form of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the difi'erent views:
Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the structure.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the structure with a part shown in position.
According to this invention, a channel shaped sheet metal member I is stamped or formed to form a bottom portion 2, side portions or flanges 3 terminating in inwardly and downwardly inclined lips 4 having spaced portions 5 from which 25 the parallel upright rails 6 extend. These rails 6 are adapted for supporting saddles I which serve as post holding members. Onlyone saddle is shown but it will be understood that any desired number may be used.
30 The saddle 1 is formed with a bottom having an aperture 8 for receiving a post l2. The bottom terminates in side flanges 9 which fit snugly between the rails 6. These side flanges 9 are provided with outwardly turned and downwardly 35 directed flanges Ill, that form guideways for receiving the rails 6. The flanges to are preferably indented as indicated at H to frictionally engage the rails and firmly maintain the' saddle in any desired position.
Spaced ears l3 are stampedupwardly from an anchor plate M which is nailed to the floor. The bottom of the structure is provided with an aperture l5 through which the ears are directed for engaging over the side edges of the opening l5.
To the exterior of the side flanges of the structure are secured plates I6 which are provided with offset portions above the attaching portions for receiving the attaching flanges I! of coves l8. These plates [6 which form cover clippers provide for a quick and easy attachment of the coves.
It will be appreciated that the parts are adapted to be quickly and readily assembled and firmly maintainedin assembled relation whereby much time and labor are saved. In addition, a
more durable and firm structure is provided for forming a wall base.
We are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied througha wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we therefore. .do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
1. A metallic baseboard construction comprising an integral channel-shaped member having a bottom and parallel side walls, said walls having inwardly inclined portions at their upper ends and vertical rails, said rails being connected to said inclined portions by spaced portions, a perforated saddle fitting between said rails and having integral flanges embracing said rails, said flanges having inwardly directed portions frictionally engaging said flanges.
2. A metallic baseboard construction comprising an integral channel-shaped member having a bottom and integral side walls; the upper ends of said side walls terminating in inwardly directed lips, said lips having upwardly extending rails with spaced openings between said lips and rails, said rails being adapted for supporting post holding saddles in spaced relation.
3. A metallic baseboard construction comprising an integral channel-shaped member having a bottom portion and integral side walls, said side walls terminating at their upper ends in inwardly offset vertical rails partly connected with said side walls, and a post holding saddle fitting between said rails and having integral flanges fitting over and against the outer surface of said rails, said saddle having an aperture through which a wall post is adapted to extend.

6. A metallic baseboard construction comprising an integral channel-shaped member having vertical side walls, said side Walls having inwardly directed lips terminating ,in vertical rails and a 'post retaining saddle shorter than said rails and fitting between said rails, said saddle having integral flanges extending over and against the outer surface of said rails.
7. In a sheet metal baseboard construction, an integral channel-shaped member having a bottom and vertical side walls terminating at their upper ends in inwardly offset vertical rails, a saddle fitting between said rails and having integral flanges extending over and embracing said rails, said saddle having an aperture and a wall post extending from the bottom of said member and through said aperture.
8. In a metallic baseboard construction, an integral channel 'member having a bottom and integral side walls terminating at their upper ends in inwardly extending lips, said lips terminating in vertical rails partly spaced from said lips by open spaces, and a post holding saddle fitting between said rails and having integral flanges extending over and embracing said rails, said saddle having an aperture adapted for the passage of a wall post extending from the bottom of said member.
9. A metallic baseboard construction comprising a channel member having a bottom and side flanges, said side flanges having longitudinally extending bent portions terminating in longitudinally extending rails, and a saddle clip fitting between said rails and having flanges extending over and against the exterior of said rails, and being longitudinally adjustable thereon, said saddle clip having an aperture adapted for receiving a wall post.
