18 Claims.
This invention relates to door locks and more specifically to locks for sliding doors.
It isan object of this invention to provide a lock for sliding doors which shall eiect reduction in the number of parts, decrease in weight, reduction in cost and simplification of replacement of parts.
A further object is to provide a lock which may be furnished and applied as a unit to a door or to a relatively stationary member with which the door is associated.
A further object is to provide locks capable of cooperation with existing parts on a relatively stationary member with which the door is associated to lock the door.
Other objects of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.
Inthe drawings forming part of this specication:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of the double doors of a railway car to which a lock embodying the instant invention is applied;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l, showing a modification;
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 1, showing a lock embodying the instant invention applied to a box car;
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4 4 of Figure l;
Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a horizontal section taken on line 6--6 of Figure 1;
Figure '7 is a horizontal section taken on line 'I-I of Figure 2; and
Figure 8 is a horizontal section taken on line 8`-8 of Figure 3.
Referring first to Figures 1, 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings a lock embodying the instant invention is shown utilized in connection with the double doors of' automobile, furniture and the like freight cars. Such doors are utilized in the sides of railway cars in order to permit the loading and unloading of bulky commodities such as automobilesk and furniture with increased facility. These doors are denominated main and auxiliary doors, the main door of the drawings being designated by the numeral I 0 and the auxiliary door being designated by the numeral II. The auxiliary door II is provided with a` post I2 preferably rigidly secured to the front vertical margin of the door as by means of rivets I3. These rivets are utilized as well to secure to the post I2 and the front vertical margin of the door II a substantially Z-shaped stop member I4 which cooperates with a flange I5 provided on the post I2 to provide a recess I 6 adapted to receive the front vertical margin of the main door I0. It being customary in closing the doors I0 and I I to rst close the auxiliary door II it will be apparent that the member I4 secured to the auxiliary door is utilized as a stop to limit the closing movement of the main door.
The doors I9 and l I are substantially similar in construction in the sense that each comprises a metallic panel I'I preferably provided with spaced horizontal corrugations I8 which may merge into vertical corrugations I9 provided in the panels adjacent the vertical edges of the door.
A locking device embodying the instant invention may be utilized to fasten the main and auxiliary doors together in closed position. The locking device embodies a substantially plate like or base member 2@ secured preferably upon the crests of two adjacent horizontal corrugations i8 in any desired manner, rivets 2| being illustrated as used for this purpose. The plate member 2i) is provided with a slot 22 opening through a side of the member. The slot 22 provides means whereby the plate member 2D may slidably support a lock member 23.
The lock member 23 is provided preferably at one of its ends with an inturned flange 24. Intermediate its ends the lock member is provided with an abutment 25 and at its opposite end there is provided preferably integrally therewith a lug 26 directed inwardly with respect to the plate member ZS. The lug 26 is disposed within the slot 22 provided in the plate member and is provided with an enlarged portion 21 larger than the width of the slot 22 in order to prevent disengagement of the lock member from the plate member upon outward movement of the former. The plate member 2D is reinforced adjacent the slot 22 by means of a Wall 28 conforming in contour to the slot 22 and extending inwardly from the plate member into engagement with the panel I'I of the door intermediate the corrugations I8. The side of the plate member through which the slot 22 opens is provided adjacent said slot with respectively downwardly and upwardly extending walls 29 and 30 adapted to be overlapped by the enlarged portion 2l of the lug 26 in order to prevent sliding disengagement of the lock member 23 from the plate member.
The constructions of the plate member and lock member, however, are such that the lug, together with the enlarged portion thereof, may
be disposed within the space defined by thewalls 28, 2% and Sil when the lock member is disposed at an angle of ninety degrees to the plate member. The lock member may then be properly assembled with the plate member by swinging the former through an angle of ninety degrees so as to position the lock and plate members as illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings. It will be apparent that after this assembly is made the lock member will be retained against sliding and swinging disengagement in a plane parallel to the plate member and that when the plate member is fastened to the door the lock member cannot be disengaged from the plate member.
The plate member carries means adapted to support and retain a locking pin 3 l. The means preferably takes the form of spaced housings 32 and 33 within which the locking pin 3l is adapted to be received. Complete disengagement of the locking pin is prevented by means of a lug 34 formed on the outer face of the pin adjacent the lower edge thereof. The lug 34 in the vertical movement of the pin is adapted to engage the lug 34A of the upper housing 32 and prevent further vertical movement of the pin.
Corresponding sides of the housing members 32 and 33 are inclined as indicated at 35 and 36. The adjacent side of the pin 3i is correspondingly inclined as indicated at 3l. Similarly, the abutment member25 provided on the lock member 23 is inclined, as clearly indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings. By virtue of the inclination of the parts above mentioned it will be apparent that the lock of the instant invention provides for automatic take-up of any play or tolerance which may exist between the main and auxiliary doors, thereby eliminating stresses imposed upon the elements of the locking device due to impact which would otherwise be incident upon these parts by the back-and-forth movement between the main auxiliary doors.
In the closed position of the doors and in the locking position of the locking device the parts of said device and the main and auxiliary doors will be as illustrated in Figures 1, 4 and 6 of the drawings. It will be manifest that in locking position the inturned iiange 2Q of the lock member 23 has overlapping engagement with the front stop member le. The pin 3l is received within the housings 32 and 33 and the inclined side of the pin 3l abuts against the abutment 25 provided on the lock member. In this position of the parts of the locking device it will be apparent that the main door i 8 cannot move in the direction of its opening travel, that is, toward the right as viewed in Figures l and 6. It will also be apparent that in the event that the main and auxiliary doors are not in the abutting relationship shown in Figure 6, that is, in the event that the main door is not fully closed the locking device will act automatically to absorb the tolerance created by the separation of the doors. This will become apparent when it is considered that the main door may move toward the left in order to properly abut the front stop I4 of the auxiliary door. rIhis movment of the main door will carry with it the pin Si which is mounted upon the plate member 2@ secured to the main door so as to eifect disengagement of the pin from the abutment 25. Upon the occurrence of this disengagement the pin will, by the action of gravity, be lowered so that the engagement between the pin and the abutment will again be established. By virtue of the formation of the slot 22 in the plate member 2l) relative sliding movement between the plate member and the lock member may occur.
When it is desired to slide the door toward open position the locking device may be released. Such release may be accomplished after a seal (not shown), and which is utilized to connect the pin to the plate member 2e is removed, by moving the pin 3l upwardly to a point above the upper edge of the lock member 23. The latter may then be swung outwardly so as to be disengaged from the front stop i4 after which it may be permitted to swing downwardly and assume the position designated by the dot and dash lines illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. The main and auxiliary doors may then be moved to open position.
Provision is made for the protection of the inwardly extending lug 2E against breakage by impact with the closed end of the slot 22 provided in the plate member. To this end the plate member is provided with a rib 3S capable of being engaged by a depending lug 3S on the lock mem'- ber 23 prior to the engagement between the lug 23 and the closed end of the slot 22.
If desired, means may be provided to insure against movement of the lock member 23 in the closing direction of the door when such movement is imparted to the main door It after the main door has been closed. One form of such means, utilized upon the double door construction illustrated in Figures 1 and 6, is illustrated in Figures 2 and 7 of the drawings. There is shown a bracket member e@ fastened by means of rivets il to the front vertical margin of the f auxiliary door i l. The bracket member lili may be provided with a pocket l2 within which the inturned flange 53 provided on a lock member IM may be received. The inturned ange 53 is preferably inclined rearwardly and cooperates with a forwardly inclined ange l5 provided on the bracket member di? in order to prevent outward movement of the inturned flange. Slight clearance is provided between the inturned iiange d3 and a flange G6 formed on the bracket member and defining one margin of the pocket 42 of said member. It will be seen from the structure above described that should the lock member 44 move in the direction of closing travel of the door, together with the lock plate member and the pin, the inturned flange 43 of the lock member will engage the flange d@ of the bracket member lle, thus limiting the movement of the lock member while permitting the continued movement of the door in its closing direction.
By means of this engagement and the continued closing movement of the door there will be effected disengagement between the pin 3i and the abutment 25 provided on the lock member M..
Consequently, the pin will again be automatically lowered so as to take up the closing movement of the door and prevent the return thereof to its former position.
In Figures 3 and 8 the instant invention is illustrated embodied in a locking device applicable to railway box cars, that is, to railway cars utilizing a single door upon each side of the car. The car is provided with a front door post l? to one leg 48 of' which is secured a front stop member 49. The front stop member is adapted to be engaged by the front edge of the door 5G to limit the closing movement of the door. To lock the door 5E! in its closed position a locking device substantially similar to the locking device hereinabove described and illustrated in Figures Astruction from Ythe lock member :2.3.
lland ,6;may be utilized. This locking device'emibodies the 'plate member 20 Aprovided with aislot 2.2 through which extends a .lug '26 formed on a :l0ck fmember 5|, differing somewhat in its convThe lock .member 5| .is provided with the abutment 25 adapted to cooperate with pin k3l 'retained Vupon the Vplate .member 2l] by means of housings ,32 and 33.
`The llock member 45l differs essentially from that .disclosed in Figures l and ofthe .drawings in that the inturned'flangeZ thereof, which `has Voverlapping,engagement with ,the front stopmember 49, is provided with a ange 53 extending iin ythe direction of opening movement of the door. This Vflange 53 overlaps the front stop 'member 49 -so Aas to prevent disengagement between the jlock member 5l and the :front stop member by an outward movement of the lock member.
In a railway box car, as well, means may be provided in order to insure relative movement between the sliding door ,and the Alock member. Such means is illustrated in Figure 18 ofthe drawings and tak-es the form of an angle member 54, one 4flange 155 of which is riveted to the front .door p ost 41 while the other flange .56 extends `outwardly from the car in overlapping relationship with the inturned `flange 52 of the lock mem- -ber when the latter is Ain vits locking position.
It will be 4apparent that numerous changes .and modifications in the details of the `invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such modifications and changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited only by the Scope of the claims appended hereto.
