This invention relates to car door locksand is directed primarily to locks for sliding car doors.
It is an object of this invention to provide locks for sliding carVv doors embodying hasp fasteners mounted for relative movement upon said doors.
A further object is to provide locks for sliding car doors embodying movable hasp fasteners capable of movement relative to the doors to take up any clearances in said locks and thus substantially decrease the wear on the parts thereof.
A further object is to provide locks for sliding car -doors embodying hasp fasteners slidably mounted for relative movement upon said doors to take up clearances in said locks and means responsive to the relative movement between said fasteners and doors to maintain said locks in said condition.
A further object is to provide locks for sliding car doors embodying haspvfasteners mounted for sliding movement uponY said doors and hasps swingably carried by said fasteners whereby said hasps may be engaged with staples secured to the car sides without the necessity of sledging said hasps to establish said engagement.

Referring to the drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, applicants novel lock indicated as a whole by the 5 reference numeral Ill, is shown applied to a car door II adapted to slide relative to the side I2 of arrailway house car in order to open and close a door openingIB formed therein. The door opening is defined in part by means of a Z-shaped door post I4 provided with a wooden ller I5 as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The door post 'shown is disposed at the front edge of the doorY opening and carries an angle stop member I6 secured to the door post I4 by means of rivets 15 .Il extending through one leg I8 of said stop member. The other leg I9 of said stop member cooperates with one flange of the door post I4 to provide a recess adapted to receive the forward edge of the sliding door II. The rivets II serve 20 additionally to secure an angle member 2I to the door Ypost I4, ysaid angle member serving asa support. for .a lock plate 22 secured thereto by meansof rivets 23. Said lock plate is provided witha staple 24 and carries a locking pin 25 25 adapted to extend through said staple. An aperture 26 is provided in the lower portion of said pin and in f the operative position thereof is adapted to align with an aperture 2l providedin a flange 28 formed on the lock plate. A seal (not 30 shown) is adaptedto be extended through the aligned apertures.
As indicated above the door I I is a sliding door and is adapted to be supported in the customary way by means of rollers or the like upon a supporting track for longitudinal movement relative to the car side. Inasmuch as the roller supports for said door and the track constitute no p-art of the instant invention these parts have been omitted from the drawings. The door illustrated preferably comprises a metallic panel 29 formed with a plurality of horizontally extending corrugations 30'which merge at their ends into vertical corrugations, one of which is indicated at 3 I. The vertical corrugation 3l is preferably reinforced by 45 means of the channel reinforcing member 32. A reinforcing channel member 33 is secured to the front margin of the door and coacts with the angle stop member I8 to seal said margin of the door against the entrance of cinders and the like. The'lockmeans of the instant invention utilized to lockthe door in its closed position is prefer-` ably mounted upon one of the horizontal corrugations 30 formed in the door panel 29. Said lockr means comprises a retaining member 34 55y secured to the metallic panel 29 and provided with an outwardly offset housing portion 35 open at one end as indicated at 36. A hasp fastener 31 is slidably mounted upon the car door Il and is disposed within the housing 35 formed on the retaining member whereby said hasp fastener is maintained upon the door. The fastener 31 is formed with an outwardly offset channel portion 39 intermediate the ends thereof and a neck portion 39. The free end 49 of said neck portion extends through a reinforcing member 4| riveted to the hasp fastener by means of a plurality or rivets 42. As clearly indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings, the free end of the neck of the hasp fastener may be upset so as to firmly fasten said end to the reinforcing member. The reinforcing member 4l shown in section in Figures 4 and 5 is provided with a plane face 43 lying in engagement with the hasp fastener 31 and a concave face 44 adapted to conform to the horizontal corrugation 39 upon which said fastener is mounted. The concave face of the reinforcing member 4l, as clearly appears from Figures 2, 4 and 5 of the drawings, extends upon the opposite sides of the crestrof the corrugation 30 and lies in horizontal overlapping relationship with the vertical corrugation 3|. In view of this relationship it wil be readily apparent that the reinforcing member 4| is adapted to serve as a supplemental means to prevent disengagement of the hasp fastener from the door.
The housing 35 formed on the retaining member 34 isprovided with a vertically extending opening 45 through which a downwardly tapered pin 46 is adapted to extend. I'his pin, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings passes through the opening provided by the outwardly extending channel shaped portion 38 of the hasp fastener and the hasp fastener reinforcing member and is adapted to be disposed with one side 41 thereof in abutment with flanges 48 andl 49 provided on the retaining member 34. The opposite side 50 of said pin 46 which, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, is tapered and is adapted to abut arcorrespondingly tapered flange 5| provided on the relatively movable hasp fastener. Flanges 52 and 53 are provided upon the upper and lower extremities, respectively, of the tapered pin 46 and inasmuch as these flanges lie in overlapping relationship with the hasp fastener and retaining member, as clearly shown in Figures 2, 4 and 5 of the drawings, it will be apparent that loss of said pin is avoided and that said pin serves to prevent loss of the hasp fastener through the open end 36 of the retaining member.
In the assembly of applicants lock the hasp fastener 31, the reinforcing member 4I therefor and the tapered pin 46 are disposed in the relationship clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings wherein the tapered pin lies in the space provided between the channel shaped offset portion 38 of the hasp fastener and the reinforcing member, and the hasp fastener and reinforcing member, subsequently, are riveted together by means of the rivets 42.V In view of the extent of the flanges 52 and 53 provided upon the extremities disengagement of the pin 46 from the hasp fastener and reinforcing member `is prevented. It will be apparent, of course, before such assembly takes place that a hasp 54 will be assembled with the neck 39 of the hasp fastener, said neck passing through an eye 55 provided in one extremity of the hasp. The free end of the neck of the hasp fastener may then be upset as indicated at 46 so as to provide an additional fastening means between the hasp fastener and the reinforcing member. The unit provided by this assembly is then inserted into the retaining member 34 through the back thereof, which is left open for this purpose, and said retaining member with the hasp fastener assembly disposed therein is riveted to the door Il as by means of rivets 56. The rivet 56 at the rear of the retaining member 34 passing through the corrugation 30 extends through a backing member 51 disposed upon the inside of the corrugation. It will be apparent after securement of applicants locking member upon the door that the tapered pin 46 is adapted to abut the well 5I provided on the hasp fastener and the flanges 48 and 49 provided on the retaining member so that said hasp fastener cannot escape from the housing 35 of the retaining member. In the event, however, that the tapered pin 46 is broken and lost, escape of the hasp fastener will still be prevented because of the horizontally overlapping arrangement between the concave face 44 of the reinforcing member-4l and the vertical corrugation 3| provided in the door panel 29. It will be apparent,
moreover, that in view of the downwardly tapered s pin 46 and its disposition relative to the retaining member 34 and the movable hasp fastener 31, said hasp fastener is capable of horizontal sliding movement relative to the door and the retainer within the limits of the tapered pin.
The operation of the lock will be readily apparent in view of the foregoing description. When the door has been moved to its fully closed position as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings the hasp 54 is engaged with the staple 24 provided on the lock plate 22 and the pin 25 extended through the staple. A seal (not shown) may then be passed through the aligned openings 26 and 21 provided in the pin and in the flange 28 of the lock plate. The tapered pin 46 may then be lowered into abutting engagement with the walls 5l and flanges 48 and 49, and in this lowering movement of the pin the clearances between the hasp fastener and the hasp and between the hasp and the staple 24 of the lock plate will be absorbed, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. It will be apparent, then, from this relationship of the door, the front stop angle I8 and the parts of the lock that no movement of the door toward open position can take place, either under impact upon the car to which the door is applied or because of jarring or vibration of the car during transit.
In the event that door has not been fully closed so as to establish the engagement between the front edge of the door and the front stop angle I8 as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings the lock may still function to fasten the door to the car and to take up all of the play or tolerance between the parts of the lock when the door assumes its full closed position. With the door partially open the hasp may readily be engaged with the staple on the lock plate by merely raising the tapered pin 46 so as to permit movement of the hasp fastener toward the lock plate. view of this movement the hasp may readily be engaged with the staple 24 of the lock plate without the necessity of sledging said hasp over the staple as frequently occurs in practice with the locks now in use. In addition, it will be apparent that the tolerances between the hasp fastener and the hasp and between the hasp and the staple of the lock plate now required may be materially reduced. After the engagement of the hasp with the staple and the proper disposition of thepin 25 with the lock plate the tapered-pin dmay be lowered so as to take upthe tol-erances between the hasp fastener and the hasp and between the hasp and the staple. When the door subsequently assumes the full closed lposition shown in Figure 2 of the drawings said door may move relative to the hasp fastener. During this movement the tapered pin will automatically be lowered so as to maintain the tight engagement between the hasp fastener, the hasp and the staple and the relationship of the parts will again be as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.' No subsequent movement between these partsV can thereafter occur. However, if there should be temporary binding engagement between the hasp fastener or its reinforcing member and the door so that, as the door moves to fully closed position, it will carry with it the hasp fastener and again introduce a tolerance or play between the hasp fastener and the hasp or between the hasp and the staple. It will be clear that the vibration or jarring of the car in transit will tend to effect the lowering movement of the tapered pin 46 so that such tolerance or play will again be absorbed and the door will again assume the fully closed position illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. When the door is to be opened after the car to which it is appliedY has reached its destination it is only necessary to elevate the pin t, move the hasp fastener toward the lockplate and readily release the hasp from theY staple 24 of the lock plate. This release of the lock obtains even though the staple, through its engagement with the hasp, may be worn so as to form a shoulder which, in the customary type of lock, makes it diicult to release the hasp fastener from the staple since the described movement of the hasp fastener will permit the disengagement of the hasp from the shoulder thus formed.
It will be apparent that numerous changes and modifications in the details of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such modifications and changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. The combination with a relatively stationary member and a door slidable with respect thereto, of a lock for said door comprising a lock plate fastened to said relatively stationary member, a hasp fastener, a hasp carried by said fastener, a retaining member secured to said door for mounting said fastener for relative sliding movement upon said door and means for engaging said fastener and retaining member in the operative position of said lock for establishing automatically releasable xed relationship therebetween, said hasp having operative engagement with said lock plate in the operative position of said lock.
2. In a railway house car having a door opening and a slidable door for closing said opening, said door having an outwardly extending offset adjacent a vertical margin thereof, a retaining member secured to said door, a hasp fastener disposed between said door and said retaining member in slidable relationship to said door and member and a hasp supported by said fastener, said fastener being provided with flanges positioned in horizontally overlapping relationship with said offset on said door whereby disengagement of said fastener from said door and retaining member by sliding movement is prevented.

a .portionvofsaid member being offset-relative to said door, a hasp fastener having a neck, said hasp fastener being positioned between said portion and said door, a reinforcing member secured a hasp fastener lying in said housing in slidable relationship to said member and said door, a reinforcingY member secured to said fastener, said fastener having a neck portion extending through said reinforcing member and a portion offset relative to said reinforcingmember, a pin lying in said offset portion between said fastener and said reinforcing member, said pin extending through an opening provided in said housing and a hasp supported by the neck of said fastener.

In a lock for a sliding door, a retaining member secured to said door, a housing provided on said member in offset relationship to said door, ahasp fastenerlying in said housing in'slidable relationship to said member and said door, a reinforcing member securedto said fastener, said fastener having a neck portion extending through said reinforcing member andv a portion offset relative to said reinforcing member, a pin lying in said offset portion between said fastener and said reinforcing member, said pin extending through an opening provided in said housing and a hasp supported Vby theineck of said fastener,fsaidjpin being anged at its'upper `and lowerextremities whereby said fastener, reinforcing member and pin may be assembled as a unit prior to itsdisposition with the retaining member upon the door.

A lock for a sliding door comprising, in combination, a hasp fastener carrying a hasp, means secured to said door for mounting said fastener for sliding movement upon said door, an abutment provided on said hasp fastener, an opposed abutment provided on said mounting means and a tapered pin disposed between said abutments for the purpose set forth.
7. 'Ihe combination with a relatively stationary member and a door movable with respectv thereto, of a lock plate fastened to said relatively stationary member, a hasp fastener, a hasp carried by said fastener, a retaining member secured to said door for mounting said fastener for relative sliding movement upon said door and means for releasably associating said fastener and said retaining member in fixed relationship, said hasp having operative engagement with said lock plate in the operative position of said lock and said means comprising a tapered pin and abutments provided on said hasp fastener and said retaining member having engagement with said pin.
8. A lock for a sliding door comprising, in combination, a hasp fastener carrying a hasp, a reinforoing member secured to said fastener, said fastener having a substantially channel shaped...
provided on said mounting means, said pin being adapted to abut said inclined side and said abutment for the purpose set forth.

The combination with a relatively stationary member and a door movable with respect thereto, of a lock plate fastened to said relatively stationary member, a hasp fastener, a hasp carried by said fastener, al retaining member secured -to said door for mounting said fastener vfor relative sliding movement upon said door and a pin having downwardly converging sides for releasably associating said fastener and said retaining member in xed relationship, said hasp having operative engagement with said lock plate in the operative position of said lock.

The combination with a relatively station,- ary member anda door movable with respect thereto, of a lock plate fastened to said relatively stationary member, a haspr fastener, a hasp carried by said fastener, a retaining member secured to said door for mounting said fastener for relative sliding movement upon said door and means for releasably associating said fastener and said retaining member in fixed relationship, said means being capable of automatically reestablishing said fixed relationship when said relationship is broken, said hasp having operative engagement with said lock plate in the operative position of said lock.

The combination with a relatively stationary member and a door movable with respect thereto, of a fastening member for said door, means carried by said relatively stationary member for securing said fastening member thereto, means secured to said door for supporting said fastening member for relative sliding movement upon said door in the operative position of said fastening member and releasable means engageable with said supporting means and said fastening member for initially establishing fixed relationship between said supporting means and` said fastening member and for reestablishing fixed relationship upon relative sliding movement between said fastening member 5 and said supporting means.

The combination with a relatively stationary member and a door movable with respect thereto, of a fastening member for said door, means carried by said relatively stationary mem- 10 ber for securing said fastening member thereto, means secured to said door for supporting said fastening member for relative sliding movement upon said door in the operative position of said fastening member and a tapered pin engageable l5 with said supporting means and said fastening memberV for initially establishing fixed relationship between said supporting means and said fastening member and for reestablishing xed relationship upon relative sliding movement be- 20 tween said fastening member and said supporting means.

The combination with a relatively stationary member and a door movable with respect thereto, of a fastening member for said door, 25 means carried by said relatively stationary member for securing said fastening member thereto, means secured to said door for supporting said fastening member for relative sliding movement upon said doorvin the operative posi- 30 tion of said fastening member and a tapered pin engageable with said supporting means and said fastening member for establishing fixed relationship between said supporting means and said fastening member, said pin being biased down- 35 Wardly for automatically reestablishing said fixed relationship when said relationship is broken.
