P. FRIEDMAN GARMENT HANGER Sept. 15, 1936.
Filed March 8, 1935 INVENTOR. FQ/fO/WAM H/L/P ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 15 1936 l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 2,054,654 GARMENT HANGER. Philip Friedman. New York, N. Y. Application March 8, 1935, Serial No. 9,945
3 Claims. (Cl. 223-98) This invention relates to improvements in gar skirts or the like when passed thereover. Such ment hangers and more particularly to a jacket construction of hangers are inexpensive of manuor cover attachment for garment hangers of the facture due to the fact that they are formed from wire variety. a single length of wire but the same are unsat- 5 One of the main features of the invention reisfactory due to the narrow gage wire which 5 sides in a cardboard cover or jacket for use in 7 tends to crease the garment hung thereon. It association with the wire type of garment hanger is therefore the purpose of this invention to apto prevent the narrow gage wire of which such ply a cover or jacket to such type of wire hanger hangers are constructed from causing creases to avoid the above objection, a d to provide 10 to appear in coats, pants, dresses, ties, or other ample .surface on which an advertisement may 10 apparel which may be hung thereon. appear. 4
Another object of the invention is to provide The cover or jacket is designated in its entirety a cardboard cover for wire garment hangers as at M and by particular reference to Figure 6 which is inexpensive and on which an advertiseof the drawing, it will be seen that the same is ment may appear, thus making such type of garconstructed of a single blank of stifi bendable 15 ment hangers attractive for advertising purposes material A preferably cardboard. The blank is by tailors, valet service establishments, haberirregular in plan but somewhat of a general tridashers, dress shops, and other like business conangular shape and which includes a triangular cems. shaped front wall l5 having a downwardly pro- A further object of the invention is the projecting extension piece l6 coextensive with its 20 vision of a garment hanger cover which is conlower edge and which extends thereacross. The structed from a single blank of cardboard which inclined sides of the triangular shaped front wall may be folded about a wire garment hanger to I5 are separated from substantially triangular enclose the same to enable only the wire hook shaped rear flaps l1 and lBby double score lines to project therefrom for suspension purposes, l9 and 20 respectively. The top ends of the flaps 25 the cover being secured in position by interlocking I! and I8 terminate in spaced relation adjacent Y means formed from'the cardboard blank to avoid the apex of the front wall l5, while the top end the use of clips or other separate fastening devices. of the flap I1 is provided with a locking tongue With these and other objects in view, the in- 2| for interlocking in a slot 22 provided in the vention resides in the novel construction, comtop end of the flap l8. The apex of the front wall bination and arrangement of parts, the essential I5 is notched inwardly as at 23 to accommodate features of which are hereinafter fully described, the shank of the hook ll of the wire hanger ID are particularly pointed out in the appended while directly below and adjacent the notch 23, claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying the front wall is provided with a slot 24 for a w in which! purpose to be hereinafter explained. 35
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my im Cut from the front wall I5 adjacent the bottom Proved garmen hangeredge thereof is a transversely disposed flap 25 Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof. adapted to fold downwardly over the extension Figure 3 is a top plan view. piece is on the double transversely disposed score Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical-sectional view line 26. The flap 25 is provided with a trans- 40 on the line 44 of Figure 1. versely disposed slit 2'! to receive the locking Figure 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional tongue 28 formed integral with the central porview on the line 5-5 of Figure 1. tion of the extension piece I6 and foldable up- Figure 6 is a. plan view of the cardboard blank wardly on the double score line 29. i from which the hanger cover is constructed. -The extension piece l6 beyond opposite sides Referring to the drawing by.reference charof the plane of the tongue 28 is provided with acters, Ill designates a conventional type of wire slots 30 which serve as necktie racks when the garment hanger which includes a hook H from cover is in use upon the garment hangerflfl. which outwardly and downwardly-diverging arms When it is desired to enclose the hanger I0 |2l2 extend, and which arms are joined at with one of the covers or jackets M, the hanger 50 their outer ends by a cross bar l3. The arms Ill is placed against the inner side of the front l2-l2 and cross bar l3 form a substantially triwall IS, the arms l2l2 of the hanger aligning angular shaped frame, the arms serving to supwith and being parallel to the double score lines port a coat, vest, dress, or like garment, while l9 and 20 'while the cross bar l3 alines with and the cross bar is intended to support pants, ties, is parallel with the transverse score line 26. The 55 flap 25 is next folded inwardly and downwardly to enclose the cross bar iii of the hanger and is held down by the bending of the tongue 28 upwardly and inserting the free end of the tongue into the slit 21 as clearly shown in Figures 2 andv 4 of the drawing. The terminal end of the tongue 28 underlies the cross bar I3 of the hanger, and
the tongue assumes a bulged out appearance as illustrated in Figure 4. The flaps l1 and 18 are next folded inwardly upon the double score lines l9 and- 20, the tongue end of the flap ll overlying the slotte'd end of the flap I 8 and the tongue 2| being inserted into the slot 22 and interlocke of fold of the blank, it is possible to increase the width of the fold to avoid sharp folded edges to prevent creasing of the garment hung upon the hanger.
The front wall I 5 of the hanger on the outer side thereof may contain advertising indicia 3| as shown in Figure l of the drawing, thus making the article attractive for advertising purposes.
When the flap 25 is folded into position over the cross bar l3 of the hanger, an elongated slot 32 is formed in the front wall and which slot permits of the insertion of a pair of pants, skirt or other like apparel to be inserted therethrough and hung upon the extension piece 16. It willof course be understood that a coat, vest, dress or other like garment may be supported by the inclined sides of the cover and that neckties may be hung upon the racks 30.
The slot 24 provided in the front wall I 5 permits of the insertion of the hook end of a rod to engage beneath the apex portion of the wire hanger ill in instances where the hanger may be hung out of reach and it is desired tovremove the hanger from its hung position.
While I have shown and described what I consider to be themost practical embodiments of triangular shaped frame, a cardboard jacket ineluding a front wall, a pair of rear flaps integral with said front wall and folded on lines parallel to and over the inclined sides of said triangular shaped frame to a position rearwardly of said front wall, and interlocking means between said rear flaps for securing the same together, a transversely disposed flap cut and bent from said front wall and folded downwardly over the cross bar of said triangular shaped frame, an extension piece depending from said front wall, and a tongue bent upwardy from the mid portion of said extension piece and entering a slot provided in the transversely disposed down turned flap.
2. A jacket for attachment to a garment hanger comprising a single blank of bendable cardboard cut and scored to provide a triangular shaped front wall, a pair of bendable triangular shaped rear flaps coextensive with the inclined sides of said front wall, coac'ting interlocking means at the top ends of said rear flaps for securing the flaps together when they are bent rearwardly and downwardly over the inclined sides of a garment hanger, a transversely disposed flap cut from said front wall and adapted to be folded downwardly over the cross bar of a garment hanger, an extension piece depending from said front wall, and
along score lines parallel to the inclined sides of said front wall, the wider ends of said triangular shaped rear flaps being disposed in close proximity to each other adjacent the apex of said front wall, a.hook tongue at the wider end of one of said rear flaps adapted to enter a slot in the adjacent end of theother rear flap when the flaps are folded over said front wall, an inwardly foldable elongated flap cut from said front wall,
the opening left by the formation of said elongated flap constituting a trousers receiving opening, said triangular shaped rear flaps adapted to lie clear the mid portion thereof and foldable inwardly for insertion in a slot provided in said elongated 4 PHILIP FRIEDMAN.
