This invention relates generally to cosmetic dispensing apparatus and refers more particularly to a combined lipstick and powder dispenser.
One of the principal objects of the invention resides in the provision of dispensing apparatus embodying a casing of tubular configuration having axially aligned chambers for the reception of face powder and lip rouge.
Another advantageous feature of the present invention resides in the provision of cosmetic dispensing apparatus of the character previously set forth capable of being readily operated to dispense, either or both, the face powder and lip rouge, and in addition being relatively small so as to permit the same tobe conveniently carried.
Another object of the present invention consists in the provision of dispensing apparatus,
wherein the powder dispensing means and the lip rough holder are both self-contained units capable of being readily removed from the casing and normally forming closures for the chambers previously referred to in the casing.
Still another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a powder dispensing device having .an apertured cap normally forming a closure for the powder chamber and having a plunger operable to control the escape of the powder through the aperture in the cap.
A further advantageous feature of this invention consists in the provision of apowder dispensing device of the character set forth in the preceding paragraph having a cylinder, and having a piston upon the plunger working in the cylinder to discharge air into the powder chamber with sufiicient force to cause the powder to be blown-toward the discharge aperture in the cap. In' accordance with the present invention, the piston is operated to effect a turbulence in the powder chamber in dependence upon movement of the plunger to a position to open the discharge aperture, and the required displacement of the plunger is effected by extending a portion-of the same beyond the cap a sufficient distance to permit the extension to be engaged with'the article upon which it is desired to deposit a limited quantity of powder.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a'powder'dispensing device of the type set forth, wherein the cap, cylinder and plunger form a self-contained unit capable of being readily inserted into or removed from the casing.
In addition to the foregoing, the present invention contemplates a powder dispensing debe made more apparent as this description pro- 5;;

Referring now more in detail to the drawing; it will be noted that there is several views a cosmetic dispenser I0 having a tubular casing ll provided with a partition I2 intermediate the ends thereof dividing the interior of the easing into two chambers l3 and I 4. contains the lipstick holder I5, while'the chamber I 4 contains the powder to be'dispensed and the dispensing device I 6 for the powder.
The lipstick holder I5 comprises a tubular body portion l1 insertable into having an enlarged head I 8 on the outer end thereof forming a closure for the chamber l3. The lipstick holder I5 is frictionally held within the chamber l3 so as to permit the-same to be readily withdrawn from the lattenand the body portionl! of the holder is fashioned to adjustably receive a stick of lip rouge in accordance with conventional practice.
The powder dispensing device I6 is a selfcontained unit and is also frictionally held-within the chamber l4, so as to permit the same tobe readily inserted into and removed from'this chamber. In detail, the powder dispensing device l6 comprises a cylinder l9 insertable into the chamber I through the outer end thereof and having a cap 20 formed integral therewith for closing the outer end of the chamber M. The cap 20 is provided with an annular portion 2| of sufficient diameter to snugly engage the inner surface of the chamber M to frictionally hold the dispensing device in assembled relation with the casing and, in addition, is provided with a centrally arranged opening 22 therethrough communicating with the powder chamber I455;

The escape of powder from the interior of the chamber l4 through the opening 22 in the cap is normally prevented by means of a plunger 24 insertable into the cylinder l9 through the inner open end of the latter and held in assembled relation with the cylinder, by means of a cap 25 having a pressed fit within the inner end of the cylinder. As shown, particularly in Figure 4, the plunger is provided with a piston 26 working in the cylinder l9 and normally urged outwardly to a position preventing the escape of powder into the cylinder by a coil spring 21 disposed within the cylinder between the cap 25 and inner end of the plunger. The outward movement of the plunger under the action of the spring 21 is limited by means of a tapered seat 28 on the plunger adapted to engage the sides of the opening 22 through the cap to seal the opening and thereby prevent the escape of powder therethrough.
With the construction as thus far described, it will be apparent that movement of the plunger 24 relative to the cylinder l9 against the action of the spring2'l causes a displacement of the tapered seat 28 inwardly and permits powder to pass through the openings 23 in the opposite side walls of the cylinder to the discharge opening 22 through the cap 20. In the present instance, inward movement of the plunger to effect the foregoing results is accomplished by providing an extension upon the outer end of the plunger adapted to project a sufficient distance beyond the cap to permit the required inward displacement of the plunger upon engaging the outer end of the extension with the surface on which it is desired to distribute the powder, and moving the casing H in a direction toward the surface. It will, of course, be apparent that the diameter of the extension is substantially less than the diameter of the opening 22 so as not to appreciably interfere with the passage of the powder through this opening.
As previously stated, the present invention contemplates effecting a turbulence in the powder chamber as the plunger is moved in a direction to open communication through the aperture 22 in the cap, and this is accomplished herein by providing a restricted opening 3| through the cap 25 and by providing a sliding fit between the piston 26 and the inner surface of the cylinder. The arrangement is such that when the plunger is moved inwardly, the air in the cylinder l9 will be compressed and caused to flow out of the discharge opening 3| in the cap in a direction toward the partition l2. The partition acts as a bafiie for the air and serves to deflect the latter in a direction toward the outlet opening 22 in the cap 20, and accordingly, the powder in the chamber M- will be blown by the air in a corresponding direction, or in other words, in a direction toward the outlet opening 22 in the cap.
In use, the desired face powder may be placed in the chamber [4 of the casing after the powder dispensing device l6 has been removed from the casing. Inasmuch as this dispensing device is held in assembled relation with the casing solely by the frictional engagement between the cap 20 and the casing, the former may be readily removed from the latter by merely exerting sufiicient force to overcome the slight friction. After the powder has been deposited in the chamber M, the dispensing device is returned to and held in the chamber I4 by merely forcing the cap into the outer end of this chamber. As soon as the dis pensing device It is returned to the chamber [4,
the same is ready for operation to dispense the powder in this chamber and, as previously stated, the powder may be dispensed by merely pressing the outer end of the plunger 24 against the surface upon which it is desired to distribute the powder, so that in effect, the plunger will be moved inwardly against the action of the spring 21. As a result of this inward movement, the tapered seat 28 is moved away from sealing engagement with the aperture 22, establishing communication between the powder chamber l4 and the surface through the openings 23. A movement of the plunger 24 inwardly in the manner set forth above, effects a corresponding inward movement of the piston 26 against the action of the spring 2'! to discharge a stream of. air against the partition l2, and this air is deflected by the partition in a direction toward the aperture 22, so that the powder is necessarily blown in a cor-- responding direction. Thus it will be observed" that the air assists in blowing the powder through the openings 23 and out of the cap through the aperture 22. When the plunger Zd is released from the surface upon which the powder has beetrdistributed, the spring 21 will automatically function to return the plunger to its outermost position, wherein the tapered seat 28 effectively seals the aperture 22 to prevent accidental escape of the powder. Thus, from the foregoing it will be observed that I have provided a relatively simple and inexpensive cosmetic dispensing apparatus capable of being readily operated to dispense the contents thereof. It will further be observed that I have provided a construction which is relatively compact and is capable of being conveniently carried in a relatively small space.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus including a face powder container having a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling said orifice, and means for effecting a discharge of powder from the container through said orifice including pneumatic means operated by said member upon movement of the latter to a position wherein said orifice is open.
2. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face powder container provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling said orifice, and pneumatic means for effecting a discharge of powder from the container through the orifice including a cylinder and a piston in the cylinder actuated by the member to discharge air into the powder container.
3. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face powder container provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling said orifice, and means actuated by the movable member to discharge air into the powder container.
4. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face powder container provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling said orifice and having a part thereof extending through the orifice for engagement with the surface upon which the powder is to be deposited, and pneumatic means for effecting a discharge of powder from the container through the orifice including a cylinder and a piston in the cylinder operated by said member upon movement of the latter to open the orifice to discharge air into the powder container. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a contame tor the material to be dispensed provided with an open end, a closure for the open end of the container comprising a self-contained dispensing device having a discharge orifice, said device comprising a movable member controlling the discharge orifice, and pneumatic means operated by movement or the member to open the orifice to efiect a discharge of the contents of the container through the orifice.
6. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a container for the material to be dispensed provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling the orifice and having an extension projecting through the orifice engageable with a surface upon which the contents of the container are to be distributed for moving the member to a position wherein the orifice is open, and means operated by movement of the member to the aforesaid position to discharge air into the container.
7. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a container for the material to be dispensed provided with an open end, a dispensing device normally closing said end and having a discharge orifice for the contents of the container, said dispensing device comprising a movable member controlling the orifice, and pneumatic means operated by movement of the member to a position wherein the orifice is open to effect a discharge of the contents of the container through the orifice.
8. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face powder container provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling said orifice and having a portion constituting a piston, a cylinder for the piston communicating with the interior of the power container through a restricted aperture, and yieldable means located within the cylinder normally urging the movable member to a position wherein the orifice is closed.
9. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face powder container provided with an open end, a self-contained dispensing device forming a removable closure for the open end, said device comprising a cap having a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling the discharge orifice and having a piston and a cylinder forthe piston communicating withthe interior of the powder chamber to discharge air into the latter upon movement of the movable member in a direction to open the discharge orifice.
10. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face powder container provided with an open end, a cap for the open end having a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling said orifice, and pneumatic means operated by movement of said member in a direction to open the orifice to eifect a compression of air to cause discharge of powder from the container through the orifice, said cap, member and pneumatic means forming a selfcontained unit insertable into and removable from the container.
11. Cosmetic dispensing apparatus having a face power container provided with an open end, a cap for the open end of the container having a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling the discharge orifice, and means for discharging air into the powder container to effect a discharge of powder from the container through the orifice including a cylinder and a piston in the cylinder operated by the actuation of the movable member.
12. A dispensing apparatus having a container for material to be dispensed provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling the orifice, and means operated by movement of said member to open the orifice to effect a discharge of the contents of the container through the orifice.
13. A dispensing apparatus having a container for material to be dispensed provided with a discharge orifice, a movable member controlling the orifice, and means operated by movement of the member to a position wherein the orifice is open to discharge air into the container.
