William Buchhart, New York, N. Y.
Application November 13, 1933, Serial No. 697,824
3 Claims.
This invention relates to an ash-tray screencover.
An object of my invention is the construction of a screen-cover for an ash-tray which will prevent a burning cigarette, when laid thereon,
from rolling or falling oil the device.
Another object of my invention is the construction of a simple and efllcient device which can. be easily placed upon a tray or quickly removed therefrom.
By using my device damage from burning tab tops, desk tops or the like, or any kind of table cloth laid on top of tables, dressers, or the like, will be prevented. Furthermore, no burning cigarette will become wet from humidity, collecting nicotine moisture while lying on top of the screen, as the screen wire is only from ODDS-0.012 of an inch thick, giving practically no surface between the screen and the cigarette, as such fine wire does not affect the cigarette as would be the case when a mesh of a thick wire constituency is used. The meshthat I use admirably supports the cigarette and permits ready removal, when desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a straight wire screen, while Fig. 2w is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a woven wire screen.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a small metal band bent in zig-zag shape, while Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same, while Fig. 5a is a top plan view of another embodiment.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 6a is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing another embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view of part of the device, showing particularly the frame ring, while Fig. 7a is a similar view of another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view of another embodiment of the invention, showing a new type of a cover ring, while Fig. 8a is a similar view of another embodiment. 5 Fig. 9' is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section of another embodiment of the frame ring structure of the device.
Fig. 10 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line ill-40, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, and 5 particularly to Figs. 1 and 10, l designates a border ring which may be of any shape such as round, square or triangular to fit any ashtray. Within ring I are the edges of screen 2 as well as frame ring 3. Frame ring 3 is provided with a plurality 10 of upstanding lugs 4 which are formed by notching the outer edges of frame ring 3 at w. The wires of screen 2 are hooked over lugs 4 for securely retaining the wire mesh in position upon the frame ring 3. It is to be noted that the lugs 15 4 are within the border ring I and thereby form a compact structure. The meshes of screen 2 are sufiiciently large to permit the stump to fall through and into the tray 5 (Fig. 10).
In Fig. 6a the border ring la is U-shaped in 20 cross section. Otherwise this embodiment is the same as shown in Fig. 6.
In Fig. 7a the notches 4a are formed in the inner edge of frame ring 3a with lugs to upstanding, whereby the wire mesh 2 can be readily 25 hooked over said lugs.
In Figs. 8 and 8a are shown border rings lb and lo, respectively to which wire mesh 2 is connected by means of notching said border rings at 4b and placing part of the mesh in said notches. In Fig. 30 8 the border ring lb is curved in cross section, while in Fig. 8a the ring lc is substantially U- shape in cross section. v
In Fig. 9 two similarly constructed frame rings 3 are employed between which the outer edges of 3 wire mesh 2 are positioned; the mesh is held in position between these rings by pressing and soldering the same together.
The border ring I extends down along part of the side of the tray 5 as will be seen upon re- 40 ferring to Fig. 10, while'the top of the ring forms a hood, inclosing the assembled frame ring and mesh, with the upstanding lugs. all forming a convenient, efilcient and compact structure.
The device is eflicient in supporting a lighted 45 cigarette or cigar, and by reason of the comparatively wide-open mesh of the screen the butts of the cigarettes or cigars smoked can be quickly dropped through the screen into the tray.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art, during the extensive manufacture of the same, and-I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In an ash-tray screen cover, time combination of a frame ring adapted to rest on the upper edge of a tray, a wire mesh laid against said frame ring, and a border ring partly surrounding the meeting portions of said framering and mesh and capable of extending down along and in contact with part of the side of the tray.
2. In an ash-tray screen cover. the combination of a flat frame ring adapted to rest on the top edge of a tray and provided at one edge with upstanding lugs, a supporting wire mesh having portions of its edges hooked over said upstanding lugs, and a border ring having a portion overhanging said frame ringand inclosing said upstanding lugs with a portion of said border ring extending downwardly apron-like in contact with the outer side of the tray.
3. As a new article of manufacture. an ashtray screen-cover comprising a flat horizontal frame ring adapted to rest on the top edge of a tray, said frame ring provided along one edge with upstanding lugs, a horizontal wire mesh structure engaging said lugs at its outer edges, and a border ring over said frame ring and its lugs, said border ring having its inner edge resting upon said wire mesh and the top portion of said frame ring and having its outer edge extending down below the frame ring and adapted to engage the outer wall of an ash tray when mounted thereon, substantially as shown and de scribed.
