POLISHINGVDEVICE Filed June 24, 1935 I8 77/ar/7m775a 6000% ATTO R N EY Patented June 23, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POLISHING DEVICE Thurman E. Babcock, Lansing, Mich. Application June 24. 1935, Serial No. 28,205 2 Claims. (01. 15-210) The invention relates to a polisher and more especially to a rail or pole polishing device.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein a polishing cloth or other medium can be embraced about poles or pipes, such as brass rails in buildings or the like, and a wide range of stroke obtainable for the polishing operation, thus eliminating the necessity of a person, when polishing, climbing a ladder for the polishing operation overhead, as the device is susceptible of long reach.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, so that 0 it can be readily mounted about a piece of work, such as a nickel or brass rail or pole, and the latter can be polished with dispatch and thereby eliminating the hand application of a polishing cloth as is ordinarily required.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its purposes, readily and easily applied to 2 and removed from a piece of work, manually operable, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction,
3 combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated, in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto ap- D pended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a pole, showing the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied for polishing thereof, the device being partly broken away.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the device, showing by full lines the closed position and by dotted lines the open position.
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Figure 4 is an elevation looking toward the inner face of one of the jaws of the device.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, there is illustrated a portion of a brass or nickel pole which is designated at A and to the same is applied the polishing device embodying the present invention and hereinafter fully describe This polishing device comprises a split clamping member forming opposed jaws 5 and 6, respectively, these, through the medium of pintle eyes I and a pintle 8 engaged therein, being swingingly connected together for opening and closing movements. These jaws 5 and 6 at diametrically opposite sides are formed with'trunnions 9 projected laterally therefrom and loosely received in slots Ill formed in the arms ll of a fork 12 which, medially thereof, is provided with a handle socket extension l3, the fork being disposed at an angle to the extension l3, and into the latter is wedged the tapered end I4 of a handle I5, the length of the latter being governed according to the height of the pole A to be polished, therefore, it being understood that such handle may be of any required length, as the occasion may require.
Surrounding the trunnions 9 are coiled expansion springs l6, these playing against the jaws 5 and 6 and also against the inner faces of the arms ll of the fork l2 and functioning to sustain the jaws 5 and 6 closed.
Adapted to be disposed about circle the same is a polishing cloth I! and this cloth is embraced by the jaws 5 and 6 which are opened manually, as is disclosed by dotted lines in Figure 2, and thereafter the springs I6, when the said jaws are released, will close the same about the cloth IT, as shown in Figurel of the drawing. On manipulation, through the instrumentality of the handle l5 by hand, the device when reciprocated will have the said cloth l1 polish the pole A. By reason of the extent of the handle, the stroke of the device may have an extended range, so that the pole A'can be reached at the extreme of its height.
When it is desired to remove the cloth H from about the pole A, the jaws 5 and 6 are manually opened against the resistance of the springs l6 and thus such cloth becomes released.
Each jaw 5 and 6 has provided on its inner face the depressions l8, these provide gripping areas I9 therebetween so as to effect a firm and secure hold upon the polishing cloth to avoid the slipping of the cloth with relation to the jaws 5 and 6 when the device is in operation.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a clamp having hinged jaws, a fork having side arms spaced from each other a distance greater than the size of the clamp, lugs projecting laterally from the jaws of the clamp and loosely fitting the side arms of said fork, springs carried on the lugs and arranged between the side arms of the fork and the jaws of said clamp the pole 8 to enand normally holding the jaws closed, and a handle fitted with said fork.
2. A device of the character described comprising a clamp having hinged jaws, a fork having side arms spaced from each other a distance greater than the size of the clamp, lugs projecting laterally from the jaws of the clamp and loosely fitting the side arms of said fork, springs carried on the lugs and arranged between the side arms of the fork and the jaws of said clamp and normally holding the jaws closed, and a handie fitted with said fork, the side arms of the fork being slotted for permitting the displacement of the lugs therein on the opening of said jaws against the resistance of the springs.
