GATE OR DOOR FASTENER Filed May 22, 1935 ZM mroz MmzYALBoweW Patented Apr. 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in gate or door fasteners and the main object is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient device by the use of which a door or gate may be locked in either an opened, closed or intermediate position.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind comprising a notched fastening member adapted to be secured to either the door or gate or the frames thereof and a flexible element adapted to be attached likewise to either the door, gate or their frames and further adapted for releasable connection to the fastening member for the purpose of holding the door or gate in an adjusted position.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind comprising simply a fastening plate and a yoke turned outwardly and upwardly therefrom and having spaced aligned outstanding fingers along its opposite sides, and at the end of a short fastening chain a flat yoke plate having a slot of such length that it may be worked down over or removed upwardly over the said yoke fingers, one at a time, but cannot be either lowered or lifted straight on or off the yoke.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a frontal elevation of my fastening device as applied to a gate and frame shown fragmentally.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the yoke alone.
Figure 3 is a side or edge view of the yoke alone.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a preferred form of chain clamp for use with my invention.
Referring now with more particularity to the drawing my invention comprises a fastening or yoke member designated generally by the numeral 5 and comprising a vfiat rectangular mounting plate 6 and a yoke I bent outwardly and upwardly from the bottom of the plate 6 and spaced outwardly in parallelism therewith by the bight or throat 8. The yoke I is preferably considerably narrower than the plate 6 and starting from the top downward has horizontally aligned pairs of vertically spaced fingers 9 extended laterally from its sides and turned arcuately back slightly toward the plate 6 as shown best in Figure 2. As here shown there are three pairs of the fingers 9 but they may be of greater or lesser number according to the length of the yoke I so that a substantial lower portion thereof remains clear. Be-
tween each finger an intervening notch IU of equal width is formed as shown.
This yoke member is then secured byscrews or other fasteners l I through the base plate 6 to the door or gate frame A in (Figure 1) near the gate B with the yoke l in upstanding position.
A short length of chain I2 is secured in any suitable manner as by the U-shaped clamp l3 and a bolt 14 to the gate B and. at its end is linked at l5 through a yoke plate I6 of flat rectangular form. This yoke plate l6 has an elongated slot I! of length greater than the diagonal distance D between one finger 9 and an opposite notch l0 but substantially less than the horizontal distance D measured between the outer ends of a pair of the fingers 9. Thus the yoke plate It cannot he slipped straight down over or likewise removed from the yoke l but by tilting the plate alternately from end to end as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 so that the slot I! will first receive a finger on one side and then a finger on the other, meanwhile entering alternate notches Hi the plate can be worked down to the throat 8 of the yoke and the gate will be fastened. By reversing the movement the plate l6 can be worked up off the yoke to free the gate and this action may be readily and quickly performed as will be understood. At the same time the neces sary working of the plate Hi to either lock or unlock the gate prevents accidental unlocking and prevents the gate being unlocked by stock while the installation is such that they might come near the lock. As a further safeguard against the yoke plate l6 being accidentally removed an auxiliary lock plate I 8 similar to the yoke plate may be employed and secured by a chain l9 and staple 20 to the frame B near the yoke member 5. This plate l8 also has an elongated slot 2| by which this plate may be worked down over the yoke 1 following the regular yoke plate l6. Then to unlock the gate it is necessary to first remove this look plate I8 before the yoke plate Hi can be removed.
The device may be used also in other ways and for other purposes than a gate or door lock and may be used for holding the gate or door either closed, open or at an intermediate position. The fingers 9 as set forth are turned back slightly so that they will not catch on clothes or the like passing near. Also by employing a chain at I2 having links of the correct length an end link may be used to engage the yoke 1 in lieu of, and in the same manner as, the yoke plate I6 as will be understood.
While I have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same minor structural details, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, not departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, a yoke member comprising a mounting plate and an elongated yoke turned outwardly and upwardly from the plate, fingers extended laterally from the yoke in vertically spaced relationship and in horizontally aligned pairs and forming notches in between and a fastening member having an elongated opening adapted to engage theyoke.
2. In a device of the kind described, a yoke member comprising a mounting plate and an elongated yoke turned outwardly and upwardly from the plate, fingers extended laterally from the yoke in vertically spaced relationship and. in horizontally aligned pairs and forming notches in between and a fastening member having an 3. In a device of the kind described, a yoke member comprising a mounting plate and an elongated yoke spaced outwardly from the mounting plate, a plurality of fingers extended from the opposite margins of the yoke in oppositely aligned spaced relation forming notches in between, and a fastening member having an elongated slot of a length greater than the distance across the yoke between a notch on one side and a finger on the other but less than the overall width across the yoke from the outer edge of one finger to another.
