A. L. BRANCH COMBINATION KEY AND CARD HOLDER Filed Feb. 27, 1955 EJUBHMQV g g-Zn while driving 2,913,027 .OOMBINATiON AND CARD HQLDEB Al e anemo e Ap tlication February 27, L935, Serial Np. 8,5515 6 C a ms (Ci; 20 :3)
This invention relates to holders and carriers for automobile registration cards, drivers perrnits and such other papers as may be required to be carried by the operator of a motor vehicle Its object is to provide a named papers which will protect them against undue wear and tear, which will insure that the said papers are always in possession of the operator when driving and which will permitneasy display of the papers when called upon by persons having a right to see them.
The laws offlmost jurisdictions require that operators of motor vehicles, when drivingshall have in'their possession a drivers vpermit and a registration card showing the name and residence of the owneroif the car. When carried in the drivers pocket or in a card case or purse, as they usually are, they become worn and defaced. When so carried they are not only not handy .to procure "when demanded by an oiiicer, but they will be frequently forgotten when the driver changes suits.
My invention-provides a carrier for such cards or papers which is in the form of a fountain pen barrel. which may be carried in the pocket of the driver as he would carry a pen, the barrel being provided with means for supporting the said papers rolled up and provided with means for'supporting the ignition key for the vehicle. Since the said papers and" the ignition key are fastened together, the operator of the vehicle is. insured. that he will always have with him his drivers permit and other necessary papers when driving. V
Referring tothe accompanying drawing which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate the same parts thruout.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing the casing and card holderwith a card or cards wound thereon,
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the card holding elements in open position, and
Figure 4 is a modified form of a key-attaching end for the casing.
In the drawing numeral l indicates a casing having a removable cap 2 which may be screw threaded upon the casing as shown. The other end of the casing is preferably closed. The casing is provided with a suitable clip or fastener for securing the device in the pocket of the driver, and when so carried it will resemble a fountain pen or pencil. The cap has a central openingthru carrier for the above in card n a e was s em: .4 seer thr aded 29 h s the ei 25 NITED sures BATENT oFri E which extends a stem 4 which carries an ignition key on its outer end and the card supporting ele mentson its innerend. H
The card supporting elements consist ot a pair of resilient strips 5, and 6. as 6, is secured to the .endof the stem it. 4; coni venient way of securing these elements together is by splitting the end of the stem {4 and insert.- ing the end .of the strip therein and soldering or w in it. It may be und fea i l t e s? the strip 6 and the Stem 4 or a single piece. a nut l3. A compression spring l4 surrounds the stem 4 and is confined between the nut l3 and the ring it, so as to urge the ring '12 into engagement with the shoulders i0 and H. The shoulder l I prevents the ring l2 from being forced along the strip 6 when the parts are in open position as shown in Figure 3.
A small collar i5 is fitted around the stem 4 and a Washer I6 is positioned against this collar. A nut ll having an eye for holding an ignition key it is screwthreaded upon the. stem and brought into engagement with the washer Hi. This provides a swivel connection between the card and key holding elements and the casing.
A card 58 is held along one edge between the strips 5 and and may be wound around these strips between the rings l and 2. The card l9 may be a drivers permit, a registration card or other papers or all of these, being shown as a single card for the purpose of simplicity only. 4
For inspection of the cards or permit the cap 2 is unscrewed and the parts withdrawn from the casing whereupon the cards may be unwound and inspected. When wound around the holding strips they are kept clean and dry and are not subject to any friction to deface them.
In the modified form of cap shown in Figure 4, the single cap 2% is used instead of the three parts l5, H5, and ii shown in Figure 1. This cap has an extended portion H which is threaded on its 5 One o thes s -19 5.
interior to receive the threaded end of the stem. The end of this extended portion engages a nut 23. The cap is provided with an eye portion 22 to receive a key or key ring, or chain. In other respects this form is the same as that shown in Figures 1 to 3.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, I therefore do not limit myself to the invention as shown in the drawing and described in the specification but only as set forth in the appended claims.
