SANITARY SEAT LIFT FOR WATER CLOSET BOWL SEATS Filed Jan. 11, 1934 Patented Apr. 30, 1935.
SANITARY SEAT WT FOR BOWL SEAT WATER CLQSET S 6 Claims.
My invention relates to water closet bowl seats and has for a purpose the provision of a sanitary handle secured to either side or the front thereof.
The undersurface of the seat is exposed to 5 the contents of the bowl and when it is desirable to raise or lower the seat, some part of the under surface must be grasped with the fingers. This is an undesirable and unsanitary condition and I have overcome it by providing the seat with a 10 handle, the finger contacting portion of which is so thoroughly protected from the contents of the bowl that one may raise or lower the seat with the assurance that when doing so the fingers will not be contacting anything unsanitary.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred form of the invention.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a water 20 closet bowl assembly illustrating the use of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the handle;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line L4 -.of Fig.1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows and Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the handle as attached to the seat and looking in the direction 30 shown at 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral III indicates a water closet bowl which carries a seat l2 hinged to the bowl as at M. A cover I6 lies upon the seat I 2 and it is also hinged as at iii. A pair of rubber feet i9 attached to the cover l2, protect the upper surface of the bowl I 0. On the undersurface of the seat l2 as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5 I attach, by screws 20 or other means, the handle 22. The ear or attaching portion 24 thereof bears flatly against the underside of the seat l2 and has formed near the peripheral edge of the seat, a ridge 26. Moisture or drippings forming on the ear 24 can drip from the peak of the ridge 26. Extending laterally and offset from the ear 24 is the gripping portion 28 of the handle 22. This gripping portion 28 of the handle 22 is of such curvature as to provide a surface 30 to be contacted by the fingers as shown in Figure 4. A downwardly extending flange 32 forming part of the gripping portion and running the major portion of the length of the handle 28 offers a protecting shield for the con tacting portion 30. It is obvious from Figures 4 and 5 that any splashing of the contents of the bowl ill positively cannot reach the surface 3}] of the handle 28. v
As viewed inFigures 1 and 3, it will be seen that the edges 34 and 36-of the handle 28 are nicely curved or rounded thus offering no obstruction to a cleaning cloth or clothing. The portion 23 of the handle 22 lies very near the periphery of the seat l2. It is apparent, therefore, that the handle 28 has no edges or corners to catch clothing or the like.
The device is preferably made from a metal stamping and can be chromium plated to harmonize with the other fixtures of the water closet bowl assembly, but may be made of composition or any other suitable material.
I have herein described the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that a number of departures may be made in the size and shape of my device without departing from the scope of the invention. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sanitary lift for a water closet bowl seat comprising an attaching portion adapted to be secured to a water closet bowl seat, an offset portion integral with said attaching portion and a drip ridge arranged between said attaching and offset portions.
2. In combination, a water closet bowl seat, an ear secured to the underside of said seat, a laterally extending offset portion joined to said ear and having a drip ridge intermediate said ear and said offset portion to serve as a drain for moisture or the like.
3. In combination, a water closet bowl seat, an ear secured to the underside of said seat and a.
laterally extending offset portion joined to said ear and having a shield integral with said offset portion extending vertically therefrom.
4. A handle for a water closet bowl seat comprising an attaching portion adapted to be secured to a water closet bowl seat, an offset portion integral with said attaching portion and a ridge between said attaching portion and offset portion.
5. In ahandle for a water closet bowl seat including an attaching portion adapted to be secured to the underside of a water closet bowl seat, an offset portion integral with said attaching portion and extending therefrom along a line above the plane of the underside of said seat providing a finger contacting portion, said offset portion having rounded corners to prevent hooking or catching of clothing and cleaning cloths or the like and having a flange to exclude contents of said water closet bowl from the finger contacting =a seat to avoid entanglements with arflelea 0! portion of said oflset portion. clothing and the like, depending means between 6. A handle for a. water closet bowl seat comthe last two means for collecting moisture like]; prising means for attaching the handle to a seat, to accumulate on said handle and means on said 5 means offset and extending laterally therefrom handle portion'shielding it from the contents of 5 to provide a handle portion for raising'and lowersaid bowl. ing the seat, said handle portion having a con- GEORGE 1".
