According to the modication shown in Fig. 7, the arm 9 is held under resilient tension against the bar 2, by means of a leaf spring 25 which is coniigurated to pass around the collar 13, and the arms 25a of which press away from each other and against the interior surfaces -of the finger- pieces 26, 27, said spring being retained against possible outward displacement by the collar 13 and secured against possible inward displacement by the wall 2a of the bar 2. The iinger-piece 26 is provided with a springy terminal 28, which is so coniigurated that when the two ringer-pieces are pressed against each other the said terminal engages the extremity of iingerpiece 27, as shown by the dash and dot lines, and thereby retains the arm 9 in the open inoperative state shown. Upon swinging oi. the arm 9 toward the bar 2, the finger- pieces 26, 27 uncatch and become disengaged from each other.

In the modication shown in Fig. 8 the arm 9 and bar 2 are pressed toward each other by means of a helical spring 29, which is secured to each of them in the location and manner shown and continually draws them against each other. In Pig, 9 a helical compression spring 30 has its terminals seated within pockets 31 formed in the ringer- pieces 26, 27, and by continually pressing the finger-pieces away from each other causes the arm 9 and bar 2 to be maintained under resilient tension against each other.

Variations may be resorted to within the scope of theinvention, and portions oi' the improvements may be used without others.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:-

1. A hair curler having the combination oi? a hair winding bar having a pair of ears, an axle passing through and joining said ears, a hair gripping arm having a pair oi.' ears pivoted on said axle, and a hair gripping band being pivoted on said axle.

2. A hair curler having the combination oi' a hair winding bar having a pair of ears, an axle passing through and joining said ears, a hair gripping arm having a pair of ears pivoted on said axle, and a hair gripping band being pivoted on said axle and passing through an opening formed in said arm.

3. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar having a pair of ears, an axle passing through and joining said ears, a hair gripping arm having a pair of ears pivoted on said axle, a hair gripping band having at its terminal a rigid collar, and said collar being pivoted on said axle.

4. A hair curler having the combination oi.' a hair winding bar having a pair of ears, an axle passing through and joining said ears, a hair gripping arm having a pair of ears pivoted on said axle, a hair gripping band having at its terminal a rigid collar, said collar being pivoted on said axle, and said band passing through an opening formed in said arm.

5. A hair curler having the combination of a hair. winding bar, an elastic hair gripping band therefor, a rigid hollow collar at the terminal of said band, and said terminal beingsecured to said collar by entering an openingthereoi and being twisted into its interior. 1

6. A hair curler having the combination of hair winding bar, a hair gripping arm hinged thereto, each of said bar and arm having a finger-piece for their simultaneous manipulation, and a spring passing around the hinge having arms pressing said finger-pieces away from each other to cause said gripping arm and bar to bear resiliently against each other.

7. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar, a hair .gripping arm hinged thereto, each ci said bar and arm having a fingerpiece for their simultaneous manipulation, a spring passing around the hinge having arms pressing said finger-pieces away from each other to cause said gripping arm and bar to bear resiliently against each other,'and means to maintain said gripping arm away from said bar contrary to the action of said spring.

8. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar, a hair gripping4 arm hinged thereto, each of said bar and arm having a iingerpiece for their simultaneous manipulation, a spring passing around the hinge having arms', pressing said iinger-pie'ces away from each other to cause said gripping arm and bar to bear resiliently against each other, and said'nger-pieces having means to engage each other upon their manipulation to maintain said gripping arm away from said bar contrary to the action of said spring.

9. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar, a hair gripping arm hinged thereto, said bar and arm each having a fingerpiece for their simultaneous manipulation, a spring normally compelling said arm to bear resiliently against said bar, and said finger-pieces having means to engage each other upon their manipulation to maintain said arm away from said bar contrary to the action of said spring.

10. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar, a hair gripping arm hinged thereto, said bar and arm each having a iingerpiece for their simultaneous manipulation, and a helical spring secured to said bar and arm draw,- ing them to each other.

11. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar, a hair gripping arm hinged thereto, said bar and arm each having a ngerpiece for their simultaneous manipulation, and a helical spring pressing said iinger-pieces away from each other to cause said arm and bar to bear against each other.

12. A hair curler having the combination of a hair winding bar, a hair gripping arm hinged thereto, a spring normally compelling said arm and bar to bear resiliently against each other, and

said arm and bar having means to engage each other upon their opening manipulation to maintain them away from each other contrary to the action of said spring'.

13. A hair curler havingthe combination oi' a hair winding bar having a pair of ears, an axle passing through said ears, a hair gripping arm havingr a pair of ears pivoted on said axle, a hair gripping band having at its terminal a collar, and said collar being pivoted on said axle.
