Description

.5. 'K1 BURKE,
Box for Books.
A No. 198,565. Patented Dec. 25, 187mA INVENTOR Qf, 3M/5% ATTORNEYS.
MPETERS, PNOTOJEITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES EDWARD K. BURKE,
PATENT FFICE.
OF NEVST YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES FOR BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,565, dated December 25, 1877; application filed November 3, 1877.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD K. BURKE, of
y Vthe city, county, and State of New York, have sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish boxes to cover and protect bibles and other costly, rare, and beautiful books, and which shall be so' consructed that their covers, sides, and ends may be turned down into a horizontal position, to enablea book to be used without being removed from the bottom of a box.
The invention will flrst be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
-A is the bottom, B B are the sides, C C are the ends, and D is the top or cover, of the box. The bottom A is made a little larger than the book for which the box is intended. To the side edges of the bottom A are hinged the lower edges of the sides B B, and to its end edges are hinged the lower edges of the.ends C C, in such a way that the said sides and ends may be turned out into a horizontal position. To the upper edge ofthe back B is hinged the rear ed ge of the cover or top D, so that the said top can be turned back when the sides and ends B B C C are closed, as shown in Fig. 2, and can be turned back into a horizontal position when the sides and ends are turned down, as shown in Fig. 1. The sides B of the box have transverse grooves formed in the inner surface of their ends, to receive tongues formed upon the ends of the end pieces C, soas to form close joints at the corners of the box. The cover D, when closed, is secured to the edge of the front side B by a lock or other suitable fastening.
The hinges for the ends C C may be made like door-hinges, so that the said ends may be detached and laid aside when the book is being Iused, if desired. This will be especially convenient in the case of pulpit bibles.
The inner surfaces of the bottom, sides, ends, and top of the box are upholstered or lined with velvet or other suitable material, to prevent the bindingv of the book from being injured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A Wooden box with ends and sides hinged to bottom, tongued and grooved to t each other, and held together by a cover hinged to top of one side, and locked to the other, as
shown and described.
EDWARD K. BURKE.
